Many people don't like P4P matchups, and if you're one of them feel free to ignore this thread without coment. If, however, you wish to give it a try, I welcome your responses. If these fighters were in the same weight classes with the same relative chin,. power, stamina, speed, height and skills for their respective divisions (approximations of course),....what would be the outcomes: Larry Holmes vs Marvin Hagler Lennox Lewis vs Thomas Hearns Mike Tyson vs Nigel Benn Muhammad Ali vs Ray Leonard
Interesting thread. I like Holmes to decision Hagler. Hearns, at some point, finds & knocks out Lewis. Tyson stops Benn. Ali & Leonard. Well. Ali quicker at the same size. Less orthodox, & more difficult to adapt to. Leonard scoring with harder punches. IMO, most great things Leonard could do, Ali could do just a little better at the same weight. I'll take Ali close. Neither would enjoy the others' style.
I agree with all of your picks. i think Lewis beats Hearns though. A KO either way is "definitely" possible.
Lewis would have suffered considerably without his height & reach, & Hearns could jab, which Lewis did not appreciate in opponents. I wouldn't write Lewis off in this fight. He was a smarter tactician than Hearns, & better-prepped at his peak, but...
Holmes outpoints Hagler. Hearns destroys Lummox Tyson obliterates Benn Leonard beats Ali. Just a more complete fighter.
Most people see it that way for sure..but where leonard may have the edge in overall offense (body punching as well)..Ali was most definitely more elusive and faster on his feet in a P4P sense.
Ali was pretty vunerable to left hooks. I see Leonard nailing Ali with the hook all night, and pounding his body. It'd be a close fight, but I think Ray eges it. Keep in mind.... Ali is my 3rd fav all time fighter, and Leonard isnt even in my top 10 favs.
You should expand on this thread, Sly. Under this format, there are literally thousands of fights which are virtually never discussed. Shane Mosley vs. Jack Dempsey. Archie Moore vs. Ricardo Lopez, etc. Could be endless room for fresh debate.
Who is relatively taller between Lewis and Hearns? Which one of them is faster relatively? What about Holmes and Hagler?
With all due respect, you weren't invited, Fin. You've said repeatedly that you think these types of threads are pointless and silly so why come in here and regurgitate your exhausted points. This thread is for people that don't mind P4P matchups. We're not here to defend P4P matchups against you...we're here to simply discuss them. In any event...heights are relative to people of their relative size as is speed. Lewis is considered a tall heavyweight and herans is considered a tall Welterweight...so we'll consider them the same size in this one with Hearns relatively faster since Lennox isn't know for being a particularly fast handed heavyweight.
I am not going to start about what I think of p4p fights. I simply wanted to hear people's opinion on things they base their picks.
FWIW, I'd say a welterweight Hearns would be marginally taller than Lennox. Probably 6'6 in heavyweight equivalent. If it's 154lb Hearns take half an inch off. I base that on the average heavy height being about 6'2 and the average welter height being about 5'9 1/2. So Hearns is 1/2 inches taller relative to his divisions average, and since thats a smaller division that factors into slightly more than half an inch in heavyweight terms. I'd say Holmes would be about 2" taller than Halgler in middleweight terms - about 5'11.....with Hagler being about 6', 6'1 in heavyweight terms. Heavy average 6'2, Middle average about 5 10 1/2, IMO. So Halglers a little over an inch shorter than average, Holmes about an inch taller. That's how Id go about trying to vizualize these fights. I'll refrain from giving my opinions any further.....
I hope you're not being serious and hope this is just sarcasm to reflect some of teh idiot things that are said around here from time to time.
I assume he means p4p. In which case Duran would be about 5'9 (11 years younger) and have a couple inches extra reach and the fight might configure quite differently.
Tyson v Benn would have been one of the most ertertainingly savage bouts in the history of boxing... MTF
If those two were the same size? Sure I'm being serious. Hearns wouldn't be hitting Duran harder than he'd ever been hit before. And Duran would.
How about: Manny Pacquiao vs Rocky Marciano Sugar Ray robinson vs Ezzard Charles Bernard Hopkins vs Juan manuel Marquez
You are not making life easy! I would have to give those some real thought. Robinson & Charles, in particular, would wage an instant classic.
Holmes UD Hagler Lewis KO Hearns--Hearns got hit too much and couldn't avoid it for 12-15 rounds. LL's power would still be there too. Tyson/Benn would look like Tyson/Ruddock 2 IMO Ali late TKO SRL---Ali was too much of a tactician to be fooled by SRL's style. He'd land at a steady rate and break down SRL.
I think RJJ would batter Aaron Pryor but win via UD. RJJ would be too quick and too good defensively in his prime for Pryor to overcome. It would be an action fight. RJJ one of the few fighters that I would pick over Pryor in any MM.
I think Hagler takes Holmes in a epic fight. Marvin's versatility and talented right hand would give Holmes fits. It would be close but I think Marvin edges him. I agree with the rest.
He would have in this fight. Don't forget the Anthony Logan fight. If that was Tyson...lights out early.
