Luckily for Duran he retired after that fight because if he had continued to fight I'm sure he would have regularly gotten beaten from that point forward. I could even see him quitting like a little bitch in a couple of fights. But, since he never fought after the Leonard fight we'll never know...

Fighters can keep fighting until they're 77 for all i care. After their primes are over, your basically watching the credits and any small entertainment value/relevance added on is a bonus. Films aren't ruined by a shit credit sequence, even if it lasts all night, you just stop watching. The Leonard II loss counts against him, though the circumstances leading up to it are noted. The other losses count against him progressively less and less, just as Roy Jones losses become progressively less relevant.

Conversely, their achievements become, little-by-little, more impressive as they diminish as fighters.

Perhaps the most dominant HW in the history of the division, or second at the very worst, is left off the list?

yes a hillbilly who's entire family hails from The Bronx, nice try...

ironic having a horse call someone a hillbilly, perhaps some resentment towards the farmers who brush you and geed you each day?

Being underappreciated does not make Calzaghe a better fighter than Jose Napoles, Emile Griffith, Ruben Olivares, Bob Foster, Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, Eusebio Pedroza and a dozen other guys who didnt make the list

Im upset with an opposing point of view when it is born out of ignorance and provocation... you dont know the first thing about Ezzard Charles other than his stats, yet you decided to exclude him form your list and put Calzaghe on??

    What is that?

That is nonsensical... this is supposed to be a fairly informed excercise, to make something reasonably definitive... NOTHING could ever make Joe Calzaghe better than Ezzard Charles... NOTHING... its not an opinion, it is a FACT

Saying "In my opinion, Billy Ripken was a better player than Cal Ripken" doesnt make it true

Agreed about Charles & Calzaghe. There is no serious comparison between the two --- & that's no knock against Calzaghe (nor would it be against anyone).

Duran was good, but WTF man?? #2?? He got some good wins on LW and beat Leonard. Lost to Hearns, Benitez and Hagler. He isn't even the best LW of all time. He's arguably the best latino though, but he ain't #2 since 1940.

I'm torn on the above post. It is usually me who is offending the Duran crowd, as I do feel he's over-rated, but I wouldn't be as harsh as you're being (with that said, I can see where you're coming from).

I didn't have him at #2, but, boy, was he a magical fighter. There have been better, though --- something most Duran fans will not tolerate hearing.

Don't get me wrong, I respect older fighters. And Duran made his mark on history. He's one of the best of all time. But having him at #2 is way too high. He lost most of his important fights, yes, against all-time greats too but he lost.

In fairness, I don't know too many Lightweight naturals who could beat Hagler, Benitez, or Leonard.

A fighters 'most important' fights don't happen years after his prime and 3, 4 divisions north of where he spent his prime years. That's a warped overview of his career. I could certainly see a case for Charles, Pep & arguably Ali & leonard being above him. I wouldn't spit out my coffee if I saw Whitaker or Louis above him I suppose. but there's nothing ridiculous about Duran the being number 2. Chavez at 5 on the other hand, is just way too high and Im a big Chavez fan.

    Fuck Duran.

If we aren't going to count his losses against him, then let's look at his wins...dropped on his ass and beaten by DeJesus, but we can't count that. Dropped on his ass and wins the rematch.

Beat a future non-descript champ in Marcel, beat Ken "Ricky Hatton" Buchanan to win a belt, beat umm Bizzarro, Viruet, Palomino, DeJesus again... I mean seriously, this is fuck all up to this point considering he'd already been beaten (but I can't count that)...

Then he gets the best win of his career over Leonard. (unless you count that mythical horse)

Then he turns into a loss machine, but I can't count those.

And he beats Moore and Barkley. Whoop T Fuck.

    Fuck Duran.
