Some might feel that Williams' pressure could provide Curry uncomfortable moments. The only time I saw a prime Curry somewhat uncomfortable with pressure was in his fight against Jun Suk Hwang. He didn't come close to beating Curry, but he gave some discomfort with his pressure. But to me, Williams doesn't punch hard enough and he just throws for the sake of throwing it seems. .. I think Curry takes him out in 8 rounds with his sharp counters. Curry takes a few shots and may have to settle into a rhythm but there's just too many holes that Williams has for him not to land his best shots.
Theres definitely a number of welters that coulda beaten a peak Curry....... Tall Paul isnt one of them. Curry by TKO. Paul's lack of defense bites him in the ass with a sharp shooter like Curry.
I think people either forget or simply just don't know how good of a fighter Curry was at his 147 lb peak before he stayed one fight too long and seriously weakened himself for the Honeyghan fight. The list of Welters that I would pick over Curry from 1984 - 1985 is very short and only includes Leonard, Hearns and maybe Duran from the fighters whose careers I have watched as they happened. And Paul Williams is not one of them.
Take off Mayweather and DLH. A prime Curry beats both them. Leonard and Hearns WOULD beat Curry. You didnt list Duran, but he woulda beaten Curry also. Mosley? Perhaps, but I'd favor Donald. Curry had all the tools of Vernon Forrest, plus was overall just more fluid and talented then Forrest.
Disagree. He'd have a chance to beat Oscar but I think that De la Hoya would eventually stop him. Floyd would outpoint him.
DLH @ welter got a very disputed win over Quartey, and was given all he could handle by Carr. Curry twice clearly beat Starling, who IMO was every bit as good as Ike, and he obliterated McRory and Larocca, who were better then Carr. The judges aint helping Goldie against a prime Curry. Donald beats him by a clear margin. Speed has ALWAYS been a problem for Oscar. And it'd be no different vs Curry. As for Floyd... I just cant see May's pot shotting working vs a prime Curry. Donald was considerably bigger then Floyd, much rangier, and had more then enough reflex and speed to find May. If we're overall talking P4P, then yes Floyd is better then Curry was. But Curry was a better WELTERWEIGHT, and by far the bigger man.
Yeah, Floyd has fought so many tremendous Welterweigthts Anyway, Curry beats Williams any way you slice it... he's too hard to hit and Paul is too easy to hit
You just said everything I was going to say. The Curry who smashed McCrory, among others, was absolutely tremendous. People seem to have forgotten that. MTF
