I'd like to see ole "Money" move up in weight and challenge a fighter as comparably devestating as a prime Tyson.

Floyd wasnt even in a rush to fight Margarito, or Williams. Yet Spinks is a coward?

I recall reading that Spinks knees were shot also. If true, that would have been a factor in retirement.

I'll take Hagler in this but only just and likely due to the fact that Marvin is one of my old faves.

Spinks was not a coward, per se. I'm not saying that his entire career was one of a coward. I'm saying that he was scared SHITLESS before and during teh fight with Tyson and didn't show the courage of an undefeated former heavyweight champion.

What does mayweather have to do with this?

It is the beauty of Internet debates - personalizing things and attacking the poster instead of the subject.

I disagree with you btw. Yes Spinks was visibly scared but that should not count against him or anyone else. Results are what matter. Muhammad Ali's win over George Foreman is just as worthy even though he admitted being terrified

Calling a Professional Fighter a "COWARD" is as LOW as it Gets, Sly...Calling a Guy a "Coward" for Being Fearful in a TYSON Fight is IDIOTIC...Again, we're Talking about Arguably THE MOST Intimidating Fighter in Boxing History...

Calling a Guy w/12 Losses a "Bum" ISN'T On the Same Level as Calling a 2-Weight World Champion (w/1 Fucking Loss in his ENTIRE Career) a "Coward"...& U KNOW It...U're ONLY Doing the Shit to Generate Attention & Quite Frankly, it's LAME...

    BULLSHIT...

Spinks Actually Did THE BEST he Could, 1nce the Bell Rang...He'd NEVER Fought Such a Brute as a PRIME Tyson...A BIGGER, STRONGER, FASTER, HARDER HITTING, YOUNGER MAN w/Pure MALICE in his Heart...

As Opposed to MEEKLY Looking for a Place to Lay on the Canvas, Spinks Actually FIRED Shots @ Tyson, Ate a BRUTAL Uppercut & Bodyshot (that Dropped him), then was Knocked SENSELESS when Tyson COUNTERED his MISSED Right Hand & Landed the KILL Shot...

CUT the Attention Starved BULLSHIT, Dude...Michael Spinks WAS NOT a "Coward"...

We'd have to agree to disagree on this one, padna. I'm not looking for attention. I'm calling it as I saw it. Spinks QUIT before the fight began.

Not passing any judgement on Spinks beyond that one night, but, IMO, Spinks did indeed tank it wilfully against Tyson. Watching it, I have a hard time believing he came to fight.

    Exactly...

It's Almost like Saying Bob Foster "Tanked it Willfully" vs. Joe Frazier...No, Foster WASN'T as Visibly Unnerved as Spinks & he Actually Made it into Round 2, but the Bouts Played Out SIMILARLY...

1st of All, it was 90 Seconds...2nd of All, If Hagler was Facing a Guy Nearly 40 Pounds HEAVIER than his Prime, Optimum Fighting Weight, he Gets BLASTED Out...Crusierweight Holyfield WRECKS Hagler...

Marvin Hagler was a Tough, PROUD Man, but he was HUMAN...If Hearns, Mugabi & Roldan Could Rock/Buzz/Hurt Hagler, Crusierweight Holyfield WRECKS him...

    Fuck that's cold!

Spinks was no coward, but Tyson's mystique unnerved the best of them back then. That said, Jose Ribalta was straight up hurt AND pissed off when Tyson decked him with that uppercut.

Spinks had a bad knee and couldn't fight going backwards very well...he had to stand and plant to land the bombs. He'd probably hurt Hagler, but Hagler LOVED the sport and loved fighting. More importantly, Hagler was much more versatile than Marvin Johnson and wouldn't get caught with his hands down. Even late in his career, he kept his hands high against murderous punchers like John Mugabi, who literally launched him across the ring by punching Marvin's closed guard.

Marvin wins a very close one against a bigger, more powerful man.

No one can seriously claim that Michael Spinks was a coward. He stepped up from light heavyweight and fought on level terms (at least) against one of the best handful of heavyweight's who ever fought. Twice. Some coward... :notallthere:

He was, however, fucking terrified of Tyson. Of that there is no doubt. He was beaten long before he got into that ring and the resultant shellacking was no surprise.

Some people just have your number, and Tyson had Spinks'. Douglas TOOK Tyson's and from the footage I saw afterwards, Tyson NEVER got it back.

I can only say I saw terror, not concussion, in Spinks' eyes as he lay on the canvas. Moments later, he didn't convince me stumbling into the ropes. Obviously, people will disagree on everything under the sun, & that's fine. That's better, in fact. I, however, cannot say I really believe Spinks came to fight his man that night.

It was nothing like saying Foster went into the tank against Frazier. Foster was reported to actually attempt lacing up his boots in the dressing room after the fight, telling his inquiring manager he'd, "Better get ready to get out there." It would not surprise me.

Frazier positively decapitated Foster. It is not like the fight with Spinks & Tyson at all, IMO.

Ramone - look at the replay, that was a legit KO, the punch landed clean against the smaller man. Maybe he could have got up, maybe not.

There's no argument that he didn't really come to fight or think he could beat Mike though, that much is obvious.

I just can't shake the look in his eyes as he watches the ref's count on the second knockdown, MWS. I really cannot. He doesn't look like a beaten man in any way, sans his mind.
