Your main event pitches Jack Dempsey against Sonny Liston. On the under-card, Lupe Pintor does battle with Rafael Marquez. Each fight is fifteen rounds. An all-American, all-Mexican gala event. Thoughts, gents?
Dempsey deserves credit for really changing the game, revolutionizing offensive fighting with his style... to me, hes the first modern heavyweight fighter. That said, I think two things count against him in a fight with Liston: size and styles... Dempsey was not a big man, even for his day he was about average for a heavyweight... Liston was much much larger in stature... as for styles, Dempsey would be faced with the best jab he ever saw in his life... a jab that would keep him at bay and unable to swarm in the way that was so effective for him... he would simply have to respect Liston's power... Dempsey keeps getting up, but I think he's rescued by the ref in about 6 rounds As for Pintor/Marquez... gimme the guy with the more proven whiskers... Pintor... He went to hell and back against Wilfredo Gomez and it still took Bazooka 14 rounds to finish him off... I cant see Rafael goin that long with Gomez, or goin the full route with Zarate for that matter... GREAT, GREAT fight with multiple knockdowns but I think Lupe finishes an exhausted Marquez off in about the 11th or 12th round, maybe slightly behind on the cards
Liston should destroy dempsey in 2 short rounds. Too big, too strong, too powerful and dempsey was basically a brawler. Undercard? No idea....to be honest.
I absolutely cannot predict Dempsey-Liston with any certainty, but would take Pintor by a close decision.
