You are getting a little off track here. I agree with you that anyone would have trouble in a striking match with a world class boxer, that is obvious. I just think that your confidence that TUA KO's anyone who is put in the ring with him in 1 minute is just ignorant. Tua is not the hardest guy in the world to shut down with movement and quickness. Mix that in with something that he has never seen before in elbows, knees, and kicks, and I could definately see him befuddled.
this plays right into the debate between Hanz, myself, and Trplsec of a couple days ago MMA champions come from a fighter with an elite level base discipline and then train in one or two other disciplines well enough to be decently well rounded. It really makes no difference what that elite base comes from since we have seen champions come from wrestling(collegiate and greco), BJJ, Sambo, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Karate, etc. etc. Boxing would be no different and don't fool yourself otherwise. If you took an elite level boxer at a younger age(25ish) and trained him at a top notch mma gym for 2-3 years, you could easily see a champion emerge. Especially an elite level boxer that may even have a bit of other disciplines in their belt already, such as Vitali with kickboxing or even Kermit Cintron with wrestling. The problem why we never see this base come into mma is just plain hard cash. most elite level boxers are making 6 figures or even 7 figures. It makes no sense for them to come to mma until their skills diminish like Mayorga. And then they really don't have the youth or hunger to train in the other disciplines.
By the way, great thread, Damien.:bears: as I mentioned, Kermit Cintron and Vitali Klitschko come to mind. You could also throw in many of the little guys from Thailand such as Pong Wonjongkam who have a nice background in Muay Thai.
I have actually wondered this myself. Does Haye have any kickboxing or something else possibly in his past?
no i'm pretty sure he doesn't. He came all the way through the british amateur boxing setup. He's said before that he has no interest in fighting MMA and he's adamant about retiring from boxing by the age of 31.
