Just how much credit should Floyd get if he beats Mosley?

Mosley will be 39 in less than 5 months
Mosley's inactivity will be almost a year and a half come fight night
Even though Mosley looked impressive beating Margarito a year and a half ago. That was a Margarito MINUS cheating. Who knows maybe Margarito has been cheating his entire career. Maybe without the cheating he's a bum?
Mosley had extreme problems with the crude and limited Mayorga 2 years ago
Mosley has been in a lot of tough fights and wars. So at close to 39 I'm sure all those wars had taken a toll.Add a year a half of inactivity and we shall see.

So how much credit is warranted for floyd if he wins?

when you put it that way, he shouldn't get much. unfortunately for PBF, Mosley is very much a wild-card at this point.

PBF deserves full credit for beating up and embarrassing a welterweight who is still one of the best of his division. He is no longer the great fighter he used to be, but beating a top-5 guy of the division, let alone one that can be rightfully called as 'the' champion, is an achievement to anybody, including PBF.

The fact that this will be a one-sided beating because of styles isn't exactly Floyd's fault

Mosley sure was one of the best pound for pounders back in the day.Whether he still is or isn't one of the best is questionable. At this age he could have gotten old over night . We haven't seen Mosley fight in well over a year. First round of Mosley Floyd fight will answer the question if Mosley still got it. Fact is he will be 39 in 4 months. 39 for a welterweight is pretty damn ancient.

Floyd gets credit for fighting an actual legit Welterweight. Props for that. :bears:

Beyond that, Mosley hasn't looked good in years outside of the Margarito fight............and lets face it, fighters like him don't "get better" as they age.

I expect Floyd to win.........and hopefully not use it as an excuse to take a couple more "gimme" fights against no-hopers and Lightweights.

I think it depends on how easily Floyd wins.

Regardless of how much you want to break Shane down and diminish his wins or highlight close fights, the guy hasn't really ever been down right handled by anyone but Veron Forest. Maybe Winky too, if your being generous.

So, in my opinion, if Floyd beats him easily he deserves a ton of credit. If it's a close fight, then it proves Mosley is still solid and Floyd is the better man.

Something to keep in mind about Shane is his inactivity. The longest layoff of his career preceeded his struggle with the limited Mayorga. Now the Mayweather fight will follow an almost year and a half layoff. Rust is a terrible thing to try and shake off versus one of the fastest fighters in history.

I'm going to call it a three-star win. It would've been five against the Mosley of ten years ago, but not today.

It's never to be remembered as the spectacular victory Mayweather's fans will look to paint it as in the years to come.

Don't mistake excuses for facts. Are you saying this version of Mosley is the best? Floyd deserves credit for taking a semi risk for once but cmon buddy Mosley is an old man.

Depends on how Mosley looks in terms of his 'shotness indicators' ie balance, speed, ability to pull the trigger, punch resistance. This is why I thought Floyd getting a stoppage might count against him since none of us really believe Floyd could stop a non-shot Shane. But if he seems to be pretty much intact it'll depend on the manner of the victory. The more dominant, the more credit. If it's like the Oscar fight where all the indications suggested that a prime version of his opponent probably would have been too much for him then it will be quite damaging for him.

Lastly it'll depend on what Mosley does in his subsequent fights, if he fights on.

None of these things can be answered in advance. But it isn't gonna be a career defining win for him either way, since he's fighting an inactive 39 year old, though its a fight he deserves credit for taking since he's the best opponent available.

I think Mosley would beat Berto. I think Mosley gives Pacquiao all he could handle.

Exactly. If Mosley looks as good as we could expect him to it'll be another solid win over a B+ opponent, like his wins over Corrales, Castillo, old Oscar & Hatton. If Mosley looks shot it won't even be that. Either way it won't cement any sort of legendary legacy, though has to potential to lay a good few bricks down.

Floyd deserves as much credit as anyone would for beating a current welterweight champion. Mosley might be in decline, but he's still one of the top 3 in the division.

He's still not even close to the fighter he was. Mayweather will want to win more convincingly than he did against an aged De La Hoya (even allowing for the few extra pounds he carried) if he wishes to impress everyone, not just his supporters.

    I'd give him credit.

Mosley is still a top fighter no matter what. He would have gotten more credit had he taken on the likes of Cotto, Williams, Margarito, Cintron, etc. back in the day. And he would have gotten more credit for beating Pacquiao.

Still doesn't take away that he's not a likeable guy. At least on camera he isn't.

So if he wines about not being loved or appreciated, all he has to do is look at himself on TV.

for some reason.. if Shane wins, I think it really really really makes his career look great!

if PBF wins, I'll say Shane was shot

why the hell should he get credit for that? afterall, he is a welterweight. shouldn't he have done this all along (and not fought a featherweight)?

Truth is, PBF has PED-phobia. He's deftly afraid of fighting fighters he thinks may be on PEDs. In that sense, he's not, "one of them."

good way to think about it. how does Mosley fare against the rest of the welterweights? well, he lost to Cotto for one. But he beat Margarito. Other than that, who's to say? To be fair though, Mosley did nearly beat Cotto.

Clearly, Pacquiao is the greatest. If Pretty Bitch Floyd wants that distinction for his own, yeah, he'll need to acommodate Pacquiao.

    This is the thing....

If Floyd didn't fight Mosley all of the Floyd haters would say that he's ducking the biggest threat to him not named Pacquiao. They'd say that Shane has teh speed, the power and the skills to give Floyd hell...plus he's a natural welterweiht who has proven that he could stop large Welterweights.

So they'd say that Floyd is ducking his biggest TRUE Welterweight challenge.

Now that Floyd is fighting him, if he wins, it would just be that he beat an old worn out shot fighter.

    That's how "haters" are.

  25. Hut*Hut

Sly, reread my post. I stand by my position & the logic behind it. There's no hate needed to regonize that a 38 1/2 y/o man who hasn't fought in 16 months in not a premier opponent.

He is however the best one Floyd has available, so he gets NO criticism for taking the fight only commendation. Just with the proviso that he cannot define his career on May 1st since great careers are defined in fights against prime A class fighters.:dunno: Just like Pac couldn't define his career against Clottey but got credit for fighting the next best welterweight available. They'll both deserve & get credit, not raptures.

Good post. It would be stupid to actually criticise Floyd for fighting Mosley, but at the same time, how much credit can you really give him? Mosley is almost 40, and is coming off an almost 1.5 year layoff. Floyd is supposed to win. How much credit he gets depends on how convincingly he wins.
