I would dispute Trinidad being world-class at that point, though. What was he ranked at the time, anyway?

That was a superb, drawn out, epic beating

    Alexis was beautiful to watch

I give credit to that Watt, though... man he took a shit-kicking of the highest order

And he desrved it... he headbutted Sean O'Grady out of a title win

I don't recall where Trinidad was ranked, but he was a pretty solid betting favorite over Wright and there were very few picking Wright to win (at the risk of sounding like a particular forum blow hard, I actually did pick and bet on Wright ). It wasn't until AFTER Wright toyed with him that I started hearing that Trinidad was faded.

I'm shocked anyone would have picked Trinidad against Wright at any point in his career, let alone then.

at the height of trinidad's reign after he beat joppy or vargas i argued vehemently that wright would beat him. it wouldve been a much more interesting fight back then though, no doubt about it. i was surely in the minority back then

You probably were --- Wright has forever been under-estimated & overlooked. Stylistically, he'd have beaten any Trinidad.

After seeing Wright win every second of that fight, I have to agree that no version of trinidad would have beaten Wright (Or Hopkins).

Dude, I was getting dog-piled every day for even suggesting Trinidad would lose. You are seriously under-estimating Titomania.

they still act like the guy was somehow different when he was beating Yory Boy Campas and Oba Carr than when he was asking his dad "am I winning?" after 8 rounds of humilation by Hopkins

I must be --- Wright is one guy Trinidad's size I would pick to beat him every day of the week, & at any point in his career. If I were Trinidad, I'd be glad I fought Wright when I did --- at least you have a part-way excuse in being washed-up & semi-retired. Trinidad, evn in his pomp, would make a surprisingly easy target for Wright.

    What am I missing?

Tito wasn't the sharpest tool in the box. Evidently, neither are his rabid legion of fans that still seem to think he's a great fighter.

How about Starling vs. Honeyghan? Marlon was thought to be a little past his best after the Molinares debacle and Honeyghan looked like a dominant champ. Starling dismantled him and beat the rude boy out him that night.

I love that fight. Starling with his earmuff defense, blocking Honeyghan's shots, countering him silly, knocking his mouthpiece into the audience. As Lampley said, Lloyd's face looked like he just got his wisdom teeth pulled out.

Starling gave one of the all-time best post-fight interviews after the Molinares debacle.

Whitaker-Chavez: everybody talks about the controversial shitty decision, but what about crackhead Sweet Pea one sided schooling to the then P4P #1 mexican terror? Until the decision was announced that was a HIGHLY enjoyable performance by Whitaker.

    Honorable mention:
Barrera-Hamed the humilliation was so great that it ended that fraud's career...I hope it happens again to our current Fraud...you know who...WAR MOSLEY!!!

    Agree

I dont like Floyd because hes an obnoxious asshole, but the guy has proven tenfold just at 130 and 135 what Hamed ever did at 126

Agreed. GREAT performance by Starling that night. I wasn't too fond of Honeyghan at the time and it was nice to see him dismantled in that fashion.

However, if you were to ask, say, the likes of Cotto, Williams, Margarito, etc...what would they say? [IMG]

Of course, I agree with you that he is nothing of the sort, & people probably go a little over-board, if anything, in criticising his opposition from 2005-onward. They also neglect to mention the sterling first-half of his career, which was just excellent for seeking out challenges & carving a legacy.

However, he has more than left himself open to criticism of his heart & courage in the last few years, so I can certainly understand peoples' frustration. It actually led me out of his fanbase in the end. Well, that & his ever-worsening attitude.

I think he deserves the most criticism for what he's done (basically nothing) since the Hatton fight. The bigger names have more leverage to get the fights they want, and Mayweather became a much bigger star in 2007 to demand the fights he wanted. Back at 140 in 2004/2005, Mayweather and Tszyu were on rival networks: HBO and Showtime worked together for a mega mega fight like Lewis & Tyson, by comparison, what was a fight between Mayweather & Tszyu? Mayweather apparently wanted the Cotto fight after the Gatti one, but Top Rank felt Cotto wasn't ready. Now the fight would've been best in 2008, after Mayweather/Hatton & Cotto/Mosley. Both sides didn't act like they cared much for the fight, but Cotto gets a pass for the other guys he fought instead (Margarito and Clottey within a year and a half from early 2008). Mayweather negotiated a rematch with DLH, "retired", and then fought a lightweight. This is not a guy on the outside looking in, trying to get the big fights but couldn't. He was the second biggest PPV seller (until DLH retired) in the sport and he's done fuck all since 2008 but beat an undersized Marquez.

I would've turned into a Mayweather hater (or disliker as "hate" is a little strong) myself if he hadn't signed to fight Shane.

Good post. He indeed fully deserves the most extreme criticism (both in the context of his career, & in terms of peoples' ire) for the period post-Hatton.

I don't give him a whole lot of credit for the fight with Mosley. It should be a given you want to fight the champion in your division for anyone, let alone a fighter of his calibre. I can't think of any special reason for him to be credited with taking this fight, anymore than I could commend someone for working out for a few weeks after years of inactivity.

Yeah I'm not saying he should be given a ton of extra credit for doing what he's supposed to be doing. I'm saying it's keeping me from turning into someone who dislikes him, such as Pavlik taking on a legit test in Martinez (even if he is more of a JMW) rather than fighting another Rubio or Espino.

I hear you. Unfortunately, I crossed that border where Mayweather was concerned a few years ago.

He really made a fan out of me, at one point. That Joe Louis comment he made --- sadly, I believed that. I think maybe (maybe) he did too at the time, at least.
