Musze, like you I do hate Leonard, but still have a great deal of respect for him as a fighter. The reason for that is as talented and skilled as he was, he was a FIGHTER, he would get in there and fucking fight, take risks, and take guys out - even bigger, monster punchers like Hearns. Apart from his marathon against Hagler of course, but hey, he was fighting Hagler, not a fat little featherweight. And the reason I hate Floyd as a fighter is he's the opposite. Safety first to the extreme. By the way regarding slippage - I've been saying for ages now that Floyd is significantly slower than he was. That was evident long before the Marquez fight. He's still as sharp and skilled as ever, the main difference is speed.
Sly, don't do this. Everytime you're boxed in by your own argument you try to flip the script to escape. Not gonna work here. I'll take that back...I'm gonna go with you on this one... Manny turned pro at 16 and fought at 106, at 16 Floyd fought at 106. Using your logic, Floyd's fought at a higher weight class than Manny and these days is FAR more muscular than he's ever been. How do we know he didn't retire to 'roid up and gain weight angling for a comeback?
I've learned to respect Leonard as time has gone on...he's still an ass but as a fighter he was fucking fierce. If I've said it once, I've said it 1,000 times...if Ray was around today or throughout the 90's...Mosley, Mayweather, DLH, Trinidad, Quartey, Forrest ...all guys Ray beat. Nothing more nothing less. I won't include Floyd in that number because he never would have moved to welter with a guy like Leonard around. But you're right...in all that skill was a guy who wanted to knock you the fuck out. which gets me back to the 24/7 topic and what I think Richardson was trying to get at... he WANTS Floyd to fight Shane. Prove how tough he is. Floyd talks the game, but doesn't fight it. Leonard fought it.
Oh...I'm gonna do this. Saying that Mayweather should fight jermaine Taylor at 160lbs to be equivalent to Leonard is just plain RIDICULOUS! Mayweather at WELTERWEIGHT is equivalent to Leonard at MIDDLEWEIGHT.
Floyd told Gatti that he'd beat him down and humliate him? Did he talk the talk and walk the walk? What about Hatton who he promised to stop? What about Corrales. You're Floyd hatred makes you say some ridiculous things. Just like you oscrar Hatred caused you to give his tenth round against Vargas to Vargas.
Because everyone in the fight game respects brotha Nazim. He's a cool dude and seems to give the same respect he's earned.
Hatton had no business up over 140lbs. We saw what Collazzo did to him. Gatti was everybody's favourite punching bag. Corrales was the only decent win for Fraudweather at a legitimate weight class.
Gatti: "Little Floyd can close his eyes and throw his hands in the air he'll hit him in the motherfucking face." - Roger Mayweather Seriously, did anyone really think Gatti was going to beat Floyd? The guy who got his ass whupped by any guy with skill? Hatton: Well documented and proven he's never been shit above 140. Corrales: By far his career best win. No doubt about it. With that said...1). that was 10 years ago. 2). The Casamayor fights proved that Corrales couldn't handle any kind of movement. It's not like Floyd stood toe to toe with him. Corrales continually walked into shots. I'll leave the Vargas-DLH quote for another time...you're making my point regarding changing the subject when you're backed into a corner inside your own argument.
Maybe because Leonard STARTED at 147 and was a big fucking Welter where as Floyd started at 130, where he fought for 6 years before going up to chase the big fights. Anyway, he's fighting the biggest threat at Welter not named Pacquiao right now so he's on the right way of closing his career. Let's see if you give him some credit after he boxes Mosley's nose off.
"Big" welter? How do you figure? Remember, Leonard fought at a time when the weigh-in was the same day. he didn't have 24 or more hours to rehydrate. Do you mean tall? I had this convo over the weekend about the Pavlik fight...he came in the day of at 178...he wouldn't have made the light-heavyweight limit. I just want a good fight and truth being told, I'm holding him to the same standard I've held all other fighters. It's only the die hard fans who have issues when the obvious is brought to light.
Come on man, he was tall and he was a very solid Welterweight. Started his career there for some reason. He is quite bigger than Floyd and that was all I was saying. That being said, only Sly goes on to say shit like Floyd and Roy are greater than SRL so don't mind him.
Fair comment, agreed. In fact they're equivalent wins to the scale of their career accomplishments in many respects. The comparison is both reasonable and revealing. ;)
word. And who the hell is this BOSS guy. I suspect that he's a poster that we all know. Check Dymipepel's IP address with this clown....
I do think Floyd is a great fighter.. but not on the level of Ray... not at all as others said.. Ray was a boxer but he was a FIGHTER too! when Ray got people in trouble.. he turned it ON!
Easily one of the more inferior episodes of 24/7 I have ever seen. I really don't care how well these guys get on with their kids.
He, Leonard, started his career at Junior Welter. He was a Junior Welter in the Olympics, and he was a Junior Welter or thereabouts for his first few bouts. I would not really call Leonard a tall welterweight. HEARNS was a tall welterweight. Leonard has maybe 2 inches in height on Floyd and 2 in reach measured the old-fashioned way. No idea on arm length.
Floyd is every much as good as ray...who cares if Ray was more of a "fighter". To take that point to the extreme: Mickey Ward is more of a FIGHTER than Pernell Whitaker....is Ward greater? Leonard may have been more agressive and more fan friendly than Floyd is for the most part...but Floyd is more elusive than Ray EVER WAS and is also the smarter fighter with teh better ring generalship. Being a more fan friendly fighter doesn't make him better.
Flyd is more elusive because he chooses to disengage and run away. hell, Hopkins is more elusive than Ray in some spots. with that said, Ray's running and pecking the first four rounds against Hagler are definitely on par with Floyd's run and pot-shot effort against let's say Baldomir. Ray was better than Floyd in damn near every area.
