Casamayor may have made it very close. He was a very dirty fighter and he might have had some luck neutralizing Floyd's quickness.

As fan friendly as Corrales was, his effectiveness was diminished by the fact he was a very accommodating opponent. For a huge puncher, he was never a bully, he never really imposed his size on an opponent and really fought too clean and small for his own good.

He had all the tools, but he just liked punching and getting punched back a little too much. Unlike Arturo Gatti, who I don't think was nearly as talented, I think Corrales could have avoided a lot of the punishment he took if he made a few simple adjustments, and like Teddy Atlas always pounds into us, whether it's relevant or not "used his height".

Corrales was seen as his biggest threat at the time, not Casamayor. PBF called out both Casamayor and Frietas after wiping the canvas with Corrales' ass anyway...

.....maybe the motorbike accident was a set-up too, and he will announce his comeback any minute, with Elvis as his agent, riding into the ring on Shergar.

Yup....probably the worst post in Double L's posting career. He obviously didn't give that one much thought.

Physically, I believe Corrales and Mayweather were both 100 percent that night. I don't remember Corrales struggling with making weight. Yes, he gained weight after weigh ins, but everyone does these days. They just didn't weigh them after the official weigh in back then as much as they do now, so people weren't as used to seeing the numbers go up like that and assumed a guy was having problems.

If you hear a guy gained 17 pounds after a weigh in today, nobody makes those assumptions. Nobody blinks an eye.

I agree, when Corrales faced PBF, Diego was probably not 100 percent mentally. But neither was Mayweather.

People always bring up what was going on with Corrales outside the ring, but they never bring up what was going on with Mayweather outside the ring at the same time.

His contract with HBO was coming to an end. They made him an offer, he declined it calling it a slave contract. He refused to fight on their network. That's also when he got into a huge fight with his father, fired him and kicked him out of his home. HBO smeared him on telecasts, saying he was ungrateful and had an over-inflated opinion of himself. The boxing press ran articles saying his was destroying his own career. He fought once in a year's time, in a non-title fight against Emanuel Burton on a KO Nation card that HBO put him on at the end of his deal to embarrass him -- that's where they put relative unknowns just coming up. He won but it wasn't a great performance. He was criticized for that, too.

And, basically, if he lost to Corrales (which was his last HBO fight on his deal), his career as a major boxing star was over. HBO was fully prepared to never show another Floyd Mayweather fight again and cut him loose. (Hell, they essentially had during most of 2000.)

So, if you're going to say Corrales was worried about his immediate future going in, so was Floyd. The difference was Floyd stepped up and destroyed the bigger, stronger Corrales.

I think Floyd beat him straight up.

I think people have lost sight of the question at hand : what % was Corrales when he faced Mayweather. Everyone is so defensive - they want to talk about PBF's state ... PBF's chances against any version of Corrales ... Corrales' return to boxing two years later ... none of that is relevant if you focus on the question at hand.

I always wanted to see Floyd and Casamayor at 130

Over the years I heard that both Casamayor and Freitas turned down offers to fight Floyd. :dunno:

    Based on what Cassamayor's fights?

The only time he faced a boxer, a good counterpuncher he got destroyed by Marquez. Granted, Joel was past his prime but I don't see any evidence on his fights as to how he would deal with someone faster, stronger, better defense and counterpunching ability like he would with Floyd.

corrales didnt make weight on the first try. came back two hours or so later when hardly anyone was really around in the room they held the weigh in at and quietly got back on the scale. i doubt he even made weight, by then none of mayweather jr.'s team was even there watching the scale.
