Cool, cheers. Any opinions on who they might end up matching him with? Someone like Kong or Cro cop maybe? Kimbo even?

Toney's my favourite modern boxer Im really not looking forward to watching him subbed in 25 seconds.....

No worries there . I"m 100% sure they will match him up with a standup fighter. Watch for Mittrone vs Kimbo winner to fight Toney.

I bet he gets a soft touch first to judge his drawing power. If he draws good, more softies to come, if he's not a good draw, he'll get thrown to the wolves.

You think there's even such a thing as a soft touch for a guy like Toney in the UFC? I'd really imagine a guy with a modicum of take down experience does what Kimbo did to Ray Mercer. I suppose if Dana can find somebody who stupid enough (or incentivised enough?) to stand and throw hands.....

    Kimbo might be that guy.

There are a number of strikers in the HW division he could face. Cro Cop is one, Kimbo, meathead or maybe a fragile grappler such as big baby who's stand up is so horrible he might get KO'd in seconds.

Nah Kimbo would not stand with Toney. No way. Kimbo took Mercer down and that was before he had ANY ground experience. Now he has some ground skill well at least a lot more than he did in the Mercer fight so expect to Kimbo to take this to the ground right away. No matter what kind of bullshit about standing and trading he spills in the interviews leading up to the fight

Also, Kimbo has no power at all. Sure, he was able to KO a bunch of crackheads on Youtube, but he hasn't had much luck with MMA fighters. Hell, he couldn't even drop Collossus, and he's been knocked down by gusts of wind.

But to Kimbo's advantage, I think he realizes this. He talks a good game, but he knows he doesn't have the power to KO anyone in an MMA fight. (I don't want to hear Bo Cantrell or Tank Abbott either). So if he did fight Toney, I'm sure he'd want to make it just like the Mercer fight.

    What about Abbott and Cantrell?

Abbot might be the only guy Toney could actually beat....

I loved them in Abbott and Cantrell meet Frankenstein.

Rumor is it might be Toney vs. Couture at UFC 118 in Boston.

:bears: Cheers TFK. Some weird instinct in me tells me Couture will try his hand standing. Not so much out of ego/stupidity as a challenge.

Couture is a very bad matchup for Toney. Too much experience and a very smart fighter. Randy will get him down and G&P his ass.

  15. Hut*Hut

    Hut*Hut The Mackintosh of temazepam

He'd certainly be capable of doing that, but something tells me Randy's respect for boxing will make him relish the challenge of standing. I don't have any basis for that opinion just a random intuition....

Not a chance.. Randy pins hims against the cage and grapples the shit out of him.

Couture isn't stupid. He realizes he's been knocked senseless by far lesser punchers than James Toney.

You know I just think defensive boxers are the worst fit for MMA. Guys like Toney and even more so a guy like Floyd Mayweather might win a few but the styles are just bad for MMA. You can just stand in a guys face shoulder rolling and slipping punches in MMA. They would be sitting ducks for takedowns. Toney especially is not much of a mover, he's heavy on his feet and like to fight inside. That just isn't going to work in MMA. I'd love to believe Toney will have some success, he's a great boxer no doubt, but certain styles just don't translate well into MMA. Defensive boxers being one of them. Everything they do that makes them great at boxing just doesn't translate.

    Hut*Hut The Mackintosh of temazepam

Agreed on Toney. Honestly if I were to pick one boxing before hand whos style would be least suited it'd probably be him. But more than anything i think it's SLOW feet that are the worst style for MMA from a boxing perspective. I actually think a pot shotter like Floyd would be the best fit. I mean they have to keep their distance in and out or they're toast. Somebody like Floyd or a young Roy Jones might be able to make a useful transition.

As soon as they get caught in a clinch the games a bogey.

    Hut*Hut The Mackintosh of temazepam

That certainly makes the most sense....as I said my opinion is based on nothing but a vague intuition.

Might? A prime Roy Jones toys with all of these dudes.

  21. Hut*Hut

    Hut*Hut The Mackintosh of temazepam

Maybe....it just takes one misstep though. How many 3 minute rounds have you seen where Roy didn't get caught in 1 clinch? Fair enough an octagon is bigger, but again, 1 misstep and the rabbit is snared.

  22. *Z*

A fast athletic guy like Roy would have done good. however he would have to move more, even in his prime Roy would lay on the ropes and let guys punch at him. he's have to move non stop. I can see a guy like Roy doing what Anderson Silva just did to Maia. Never letting him close and picking him off at range.

  23. Hut*Hut

    Hut*Hut The Mackintosh of temazepam

The chances of anyone doing that for 5 minutes never mind 25 are slim to nil, IMO. A boxer would have to end things within 90 seconds or so, IMO. Just no way you can go an entire fight without getting caught in a single clinch.

That said, I think a guy on Jones' level certainly WOULD have a better chance of achieving that in say 90seconds than even Anderson Silva. IMO the talent level in MMA isn't at the depth required to throw up a guy as dangerous as a prime Roy Jones yet.

  24. Trplsec

At 175 pounds, GSP takes Roy Jones down within 30 seconds.

    Please.

  25. Bob N Weave

    Bob N Weave Guest

Exactly. Prime or not, Jones is Waaay out of his element in the cage vs. Legit challengers. Just a punches chance. If he misses that chance, game over.

  26. Hut*Hut

    Hut*Hut The Mackintosh of temazepam

Of course.....it's a pretty reasonable punchers chance though. No better than a 1 in 3 chance for my money but it's there.

Couture will take him down and gnp. Same fight as Couture versus Tony Halme. It might go a little longer but that's all.

  28. Hanz

    Hanz Roberto Duran

Depends. Can GSP shoot in with a takedown faster than Roy's feet can move to avoid it? Can GSP trade hands with Roy? Roy uses distance and with the speed of his hands especially with 4 ounces, he would produce a style and speed of hands unlike anything GSP has ever seen.
Remember how easily Serra caught GSP's chin?
Besides, Roy would obviously take a couple years worth of MMA training to be ready.

  29. Hanz

    Hanz Roberto Duran

Roy's handspeed and footspeed is nothing to roll your eyes about. That kind of speed would be deadly in MMA. Avoiding the takedown is the issue here. Under the tutelage of Liddell's camp, Roy just might learn enough to sprawl and avoid the mat.

  30. Trplsec

    Trplsec Sleeps in a Cage

He wouldn't learn enough in 10 years to avoid GSP's takedowns. Don't be silly.

And sure Roy could run for 5 rounds but if he commits to punch, he's getting taken down.
