Just been looking back at some of his fights today, was he ever in a boring fight? May have been limited talent wise but fuck me that boy had heart. The Rothmann fight is one of the best back from the dead KOs I've ever seen, he wasn't winning a SECOND of that fight and somehow pulled it out of the bag in the 9th. The war with Sellars was a corker as well. Johnny Nelson is probably the most boring fighter of all time but the fact that the only semi-entertaining fight in his career involved Carl is testament to Thompsons entertainment value. Can look back on his career with wins over Eubank (x2), Haye, Rothmann, Dunstan etc. True warrior.
Um. I'm not a Haye fan in the slightest bro, I want the Klitschkos to smash his face in :: I'm just paying respect to a dude who is overlooked alot, great warrior, no hidden agenda here
People are getting conditioned to Attzs, and thinking every thread has a hidden agenda :: Thompson was a warrior I agree, fun guy to watch too, and beating Eubank and Haye is nothing to sniff at. I can't believe he lost to Sellers and Nelson actually. I looked at his record, and for some reason I thought he had loads of losses, like 12 or something, I didn't realise he only had 6, with 3 coming early in his career.
I'm just messing with you bro. I like Thompson myself, I like to watch his stoppage of Haye when ever I am sick of hearing him talk about how great he is. ::
Thompson was easily one of the most gracious and entertaining fighters Britain has ever produced. The man was decency personified. I will love him forever for beating the shite out of Haye. He was not a "great" fighter by any stretch of the imagination but he was good enough.
No worries matey, and yea that fight is always a refreshing re-watchability to it :: Crazy fight to take after only 10 bouts, , what were they thinking?!
Ironically, Nelson would have fiddled with Haye for 12 rounds, but he wanted no part of a rematch with Carl, having received a very dubious stoppage gift in their first fight. Carl was like a bigger better version of Gatti, he was prepared to take a bit of a beating just to dish one out. It wasn't his modus operandi, per se, but it was something he was prepared to do if the situation demanded it. Watching him take Hayes best at 200 and come back to stop him is all the evidence you need that he could have beaten Nelson. The fact that Nelson went on to make something like 34 defences without offering Carl a Re. and Thompson stopped Haye AFTER Nelson had retired is startling. Not only did Johnny Nelson not want any part of Thompson, he was also afraid of Enzo Maccarinelli. A pathetic drip of a lad, was that Nelson. Nelson seemed happy to make defence after defence against mystery men from Tonga etc, including one EPIC EPIC EPIC crock of shit against a 5'9" Cree Indian called Willard or something. This guy had more scar tissue than your average burns victim. Boxing Monthly went on the warpath over it. And they had cause to do so again only a few months later when Sky AGAIN sent Admiral Nelson forth, this time as...and get this...a replacement for their aborted attempt to show ODLH vs Tito in September of '99. Sky had not informed viewers that they needed 6 months to get in line for the new Digital service...and offered up Nelson vs The Tahiti Savage or something in its place.
Fighters are like members of the Animal Kingdom, they are what they are, they are all entitled to slither, slide, stumble, sprint, roll over, play dead...do whatever they need to do to survive. I don't grudge Nelson anything IN the ring...his style was shit, but as I say, we all have our MO. BUT OUTSIDE THE RING...the failure to rematch Thompson, the handpicked opponents, the big claims that were never backed up....not on I says, not on.
Would have been hilarious. Nelsons only chance would have been if Tyson slipped on the piss which would have been dripping out of Nelsons shorts during the staredown...
Yup. I always disliked the cunt when he was fighting, and my hatred has gotten worse now that he has joined Watt, McCrory and the rest of the SKY whoppers to blow smoke up various, undeserving arses. His 'insight' is about as useful as he was at entertaining. Prick MTF
"Health and Safety" would have nixed that one in advance......once they heard who Nelson was fighting. "Scuse me Sir, do you have a license to run an abattoir at this address"...
That stoppage against Nelson was bullshit,... Thompson was that kind of fighter who could be out on his feet 52 times and still comeback and win,.. infact, in a Thompson fight you expect him to be wobbling around, but unlike most others if you're a fan of him, you could be fairly calm knowing he'll be right.
what a worthless piece of shit he was he could put a paranoid schizophrenic on a cocaine bender to sleep
It's the sheer onomatopoeic brilliance of it....the Schizoid running round, his heart rate at 200+ beats...and then he see's Nelson.....ZZZZZZzzzzzzzz:atu:
Another thing, the only entertaining part of Joe Calzaghes mind-numbingly boring autobiography is when he describes Carl threatening to knock the shit out of Prince Naseem whilst the three of them were in a limo in the States. Naz had been winding up Carl about earning less money than him, when Carl finally flipped and called Naz an ugly little jug-eared cunt and threatened to knock him spark out right there. Naz stayed quiet.
That's the great thing about boxing....the fights themselves are around 5% of the total story. Some of the out of the ring stuff is outrageous. Can you imagine 200lb+ Thompson man-handling the little European-Cup headed prick? :warning: Naz was always a cunt.
