Let's say you're a fighter, & all of your qualities are quite poor. Your ring intelligence is lacking, your footwork is clumsy, handspeed non-existent, & on it goes.

If you could be sub-par in all areas --- sans one --- which area would you choose to excel in? Whichever you choose, you are extremely gifted in this one area.

Personally, I would nominate punching power. If I had no chin, no heart, no endurance, no defense, no footwork, & so on, I'm probably going to lose each time out. With a punch, though, my chances are better than choosing any one other quality, IMO.

    Punching power FO SHO.

The punch is always the great equalizer. Ask Julian Jackson on the night he was being crucified by Herold Graham.....

Speed with no power, chin or stamina means you get KTFO in less than 2 rounds guaranteed.

Speed. No doubt or hesitation. Speed.

Want convincing? Think how many guys in the last 50 years with below average power will have been considered top 5 p4p at a given time versus how many with below average speed. Im guessing the ratio is 5:1 at worst.

    Speed's kind.

Handspeed without movement, chin, stamina, footwork etc is useless.

    ABSOLUTELY USELESS

Yeah but all of the speed guys that you're thinking about had other qualities in addition to their speed.

My boy Ramonza is talking about an absence of any other quality.

In that case...there is only one answer. ONE.

    And that's....

    POWER!

Speed, no question. It's the most valuable asset in boxing.

Power will get your further than handspeed.

Don't be fooled by guys like Leonard, Robinson, Shane Mosley etc...because they had power too, plus chin, stamina, heart good movement etc

Consider a man with no chin, no power, no movement, no defense and just blazing handspeed.

Is he really better off than the guy who has nothing else but fight ending power?

    OK I misread the thread.

In that case I'll choose chin since this guy ain't getting beyond the bottom run bum level, with a 8-67-2 record or some shit. At least being durable will get him a reputation as a useful opponent to give prospects some rounds ergo some minor pay days.

    I agree with Sly

When we talk about fighters who are about equally good (both have some technique, some chin etc) then the faster guy usually wins even if the other is more powerful

However, in this case where the guy has absolutely nothing except for one thing, then power would be better. Chinless, punchless fast guy can't beat anyoone, huge puncher has a slim chance

To take it to the extreme.

If my 4 year old niece blindsides me with a punch, I'd still take it without falling. It would hurt...but she doesn't have enough power to stop me even if I don't see it coming.

So a featherfist with blazing handspeed is still no where near the KO threat as a slow handed one punch KO artist.

Maybe so, sub-par to me (in regards to the other attributes) suggests below average but not awful in these aspects, in which case speed might be more useful than other things, but if we're to say this guy has absolutely NOTHING to offer in any other regard then you're probably right, power would be most valuable. Although Hut has a good shout with durability, because power without technique or a chin would be rather useless and you would just be getting knocked out each time you fight other than landing a flukey hail mary. Where as if you're durable you would be able to earn more money as a journeyman due to not being suspended all the time.

Big Dick... you can have all the sub-par skills and get knocked out again and again, but at least at the end of the day you can say "well, at least my dick is big"

    Very good.

You, however, forgot to add "Will also get KOs along the way"

    cheers

I do think though, that without any technique, it's going to be pretty hard to get KOs

Herol, for some reason, cannot recall that evening, 2 or 3 evenings before it, and the 2 or 3 evenings afterwards.

Some guys walk through speed, but nobody walks through a bomb thrown by George Foreman or Earnie Shavers.

Derrick Gainer is a guy who had almost nothing but speed. I guess he had decent power.
