Who're some fighters who carved out careers which adorned them as ring legends, when, in your eyes, they should only have ever been good fighters, not great? Guys who maximised their strengths, minimised their flaws, & suckered both their opposition & on-lookers into examining the bottle, & not the contents?

I would say, to name a few...

    Bernard Hopkins
    Rocky Marciano
    Felix Trinidad
    Joe Frazier
    Evander Holyfield
    Gene Fullmer
    Carmen Basilio
    Manny Pacquiao

Same. Every fighter has been a developing talent at some point. I could understand Hopkins since he didn't seem to have any special physical talent but his huge success and ability to overcome all kinds of opponents made him great. Or, I could understand Cassius Clay who seemed to have a style that could not be successful at the top level. But that list of names, I don't get it

    For Ugo and Sly :

Fighters that fooled people into thinking they're great because of brilliant matchmaking that played into their strength.

    That's how I understood Ramonza's thread.

James Toney. Before Michael Nunn, he was beating schlubs and was losing to Nunn during their fight.

Have to disagree with Pacquiao, he was always great after beating Barrera, Morales etc, but I don't think people foresaw just how great he was going to become.

Hopkins is a good example though.

Amir Khan. Apart from one, very brief, shortlived, perfunctory and ephemeral BLIP.

I agree with this list. Every fighter here had to prove themseleves above and beyond .... Maybe this might be the norm but some fighters of the same era and weight classes of the above mentioned were pushed to greatness for no reason above the other fighters mentioned ..
