A proud Pugilistic nation. Of whom should they be most proud?

    I say Carlos Ortiz.

Ironic, too, that along with Montanez (close to #1, for mine) & Kid, Ortiz is unfortunately perhaps the single most under-appreciated.

What a fighter. Rarely mentioned, relative to his greatness.

I agree. Trinidad would rank fairly low out of this list, IMO, but he did well enough to rate a mention.

Dont be hard on poor Hex.... it was a common error.

Benitez woulda easily been the greatest Rican if he had more dedication. I think prime for prime.... Benitez & Gomez on thier A games were the two BEST Rican fighters ever... Ortiz wasnt as spectacular as them. While you had some Ricans who were blessed with tremendous speed and reflexes(Benitez, Camacho) and others who were blessed with tremendous power(Tito, Gomez, Rosario). Ortiz had neither of those things. However, while he wasnt great in any one area, he was very good at EVERYTHING.

Could've yes. Easily? I wouldn't think so. I am surprised he attracted three votes, when the leader only has four, though.

Who the hell is Cocoa Kid? I am puertorican and I have never heard of this one. There was a Kid Chocolate, but he was not rican.

That is weird because in Puerto Rico when they make the lists of the greatest puertorican boxers, this guy Cocoa Kid is never mentioned. Today is the first time I heard his name.

I cannot understand that. Let me ask you this --- does Felix Trinidad's name come up in those localised discussions? I would not consider him a serious contender for the nation's best period, though he had a great career & probably deserves a Poll spot.

Why no love for the Kid? I hope Montanez gets plenty of mentions.

Surprised you don't have Sixto Escobar on this list. The old time Puerto Ricans love this guy.

He had an odd career. Lousy win-loss percentage. He beat lots of really good fighters and won the title a couple of times, but lost to just as many bums. Sometimes within months of one another. :dunno:

I wanted to keep it to eight. He was on the list until the bitter end, actually. Very near to inclusion, & figured prominently in my thoughts. As much as anything, I wondered if anyone would vote for him. Not that you couldn't say that about some of the others, but he was always on my mind & nearly was added.

I went with Ortiz as well. Best combination of skill and accomplishments.

"Should'a coulda's" like Benitez can win fights in mythical matchups, but don't belong at the top when considering true greatness.

Every time the guy's name is mentioned the "if" word is brought up.

agREED. But despite that, he was able to beat everyone except the likes of Leonard and Hearns, which is nothing to be embarrassed about.

I have a great, great soft spot for Benitez (he is easily my favourite fighter of those on the Poll), but I have to concur with Whiskey's sentiments.

Ortiz & Montanez are my top choices, with Ortiz getting my vote in the end.
