Were the #'s higher, lower or just about what you expected?

  1. Higher than I thought they'd be

    21.4%
  2. Lower than I thought they'd be

    42.9%
  3. Pretty much what I thought they'd be

    35.7%

If margarito had beat the shit out of mosley u can bet a fight between him and mayweather jr wouldve done MUCH better numbers

In a vacuum, that statement is true.

But when guaranteed purses are at $30 million, then 1.2-1.3 million is no better than barely meeting expectations.

Pac-Cotto is a more impressive number because the card cost about half of what Golden HBOy spent on this show.

Nevertheless, while both drew very well and with Pac-Clottey exceeding expectations for such a shitty card, the message sent loud and clear is that the only truly blockbuster event left for the sport is Mayweather-Pacquiao. The sooner both fighters realize it, the better.

How about Wlad vs Haye for the unified IBF/WBA world titles, taking place in England? Seems like it would be a pretty good event.

They should be forced to watch RJJ-B-Hops 2, they would realise it soon enough.

Yeah but that 1 30 minute countdown on spike pales in comparison to the production value and effort put into 24/7, which i love btw. I never watch that spike countdown.

If U "Never Watch" It, How do U KNOW it Pales in Comparison to the 24/7's???...

It's higher than I thought it would be. I guessed between 850K-1 million ppv buys. 2 million ppv buys was a pipe dream.

So for All U Know, the "Production Value" Could've INCREASED...

True dat. I will watch it again and get back to you. But somehow i think 1 30 minute show produced by Spike is going to equal a 4 part series on HBO.

The problem with these #'s is people are watching a dull performance by PBF. He's simply not exciting to watch. People want to see blood. I think PBF fight with Marquez hurt him in terms of appeal.

Alright so i just Downloaded the UFC 113 countdown. Shit is nothing. Its the same shit they play 30 minutes before the PPV starts. Its the same shit the boxing PPV has where they interview people and ask about the fight and talk about 5 minutes about the training. This isnt even a comparison. 24/7 is done on 1000x better level.

Here's the Post that REED Responded to...

MMA is getting great numbers effortlessly

boxing tries so hard with all this 24/7...plus the dramas and phoney personas outside the ring

Sorry, but MMA is Putting Forth JUST AS MUCH "Effort" as Boxing is, Arguably MORE...HBO Does "24/7" for its MAJOR Fights...UFC Does "Countdowns" for EVERY PPV...

HBO DOESN'T have a Reality SERIES Either, Whereas UFC has "T.U.F."

As for the Production Value of the "Countdowns" vs. "24/7", Spike has Sent Film Crews to BRAZIL, CANADA, HAWAII & Other Corners of the Mixed Martial Arts World to Profile Fighters...THAT'S Production Value...

& REED just Remebered that Spike/UFC has Recently Implemented a "24/7" esque Show of it's Own...For the GSP-B.J. Fight, it was 3-4 Episodes...Likewise for the GSP-Hardy Fight...

Bottom Line, it's INCORRECT to Say that MMA is Getting Great #'s "Effortlessly"...

You may be right. Still i wish UFC's countdown was much like 24/7. i love that shit

I think the UFC isn't imitating 24/7 because it would be blantantly obvious. HBO and SPIKE has drastically different demographics too.

I agree with this. Even tho Mosley was the one that gave up in the fight - i put a lot of blame on Mayweather for not being more offensive in his last two matches. He should have KO'd JMM, and imo he should have thrown more punches in the Mosley fight, maybe tough to KO Shane, but I expect more effort from the best fighter in the world

HBO has a huge Demographic. They appeal to all basis. And they have a piece of Spike Audience.

  22. Neil

ufc is successful because of its monopoly and also due to the amount of white fighters in comparison to boxing.

I'm not arguing against that. I'm agreeing with it.

Spike goes after 18-34 year old males, while HBO goes after 25-54 year old males and females. Yes, they do have a piece of the Spike audience, but they have to target the broader audience in almost everything they do. This is in addition to the fact that SPIKE is free and HBO is paid for. Totally different revenue streams too.

UFC has a big advantage in that regard because as a single company they are now putting on shows on 2 "free" sports networks and have had major coverage (first pre-UFC show coverage on Saturday) by ESPN. They are making real strides there. HBO has Showtime and other networks to compete against, not to mention the various promotional companies to deal with.

Since Brock Lesnar has been responsible for their highest ppv numbers so far, also Forrest Griffin and Chuck Lidell has been two of their biggest draws, you might be right in that assesment. But it's not just about the color of the skin, but the nationality. Fedor is white and he is not really a huge draw. You got to have a white american to pull it off.

There's no doubt a shit load of marketing goes into the UFC, it's one of the reasons they are so successful, coupled with TUF of course, at least as much marketing as HBO.
