terrible comparison. hearns and leonard was a huge fight at the time it took place. both had been on network television plenty of times and both had huge fan bases. leonard was also a gold medalist. not saying katsidis is a good foe, but these guys could certainly use some more exposure. particularly alexander and bradley.
when the "World Champion" (that means almost nothing anymore) has a chin that gives off a sound like smashed Waterford Crystal, he NEEDS to be carefully managed
I understand that, but there too comes a point when you have to be let off the leash, despite any shortcomings. If we are to wait for Khan to reach his peak, then we might be seeing one-sided beatdowns of frindge contenders for some time to come. Maidana is a tough fight, but a winnable one....it's very hard to prove yourself to be the best without taking a risk.
According to Boxingscene the Khan matchup is very unlikely to happen and Roach is actually wanting to fight Maidiana claiming that since everyone thinks they're ducking him that they will fight him and win every rd. I actually wouldn't be shocked if Maidiana ducks this one seeing as how he's twice bitched out of fighting Bradley.
why do you assume boxers are scared? Maidana hurt his back as far as I heard for the Bradley fight. Now he's gonna be scared of Khan even though Khan was avoiding all this time? your reaching man! to me Khan/Maidana is a toss up. But it's the fight that should happen. Maidana is his mandatory and should not have to jump through hoops to land his tittle fight as a mandatory. I'ts funny to me how both Bradley and Alexander claim to be the #1 guy yet both have scheduled dates and no oponents. Alot of these guys need to realize they are not stars yet. That is also the problem with Khan. I think GDB is promoting him as if he was a superstar already.
I have a hard time believing Khan is frightened of Maidana, because for all his fault the bloke has HUGE sphericals and has proven this time and again. Roache might well be more fearful, bu twho knows? Khan needs to fight a puncher because until he does people are going to continually demean what he does on the basis of his china chin. He needs to fight someone to get that monkey of his back. MTF
and he certainly doesn't get rid of that label by fighting a guy with 5 career KO's then following it up by fighting a lightweight who's shorter and has a shorter reach than Malignaggi. I'd rather see him fight Ortiz...which won't happen because both are Golden Boy fighters. Khan SHOULD be able to beat both Maidana and Ortiz...both simply hit too hard.
A late July date for Khan to defend his WBA title (which could be at the O2 Arena, London), is apparantly being discussed, but who realistically could Khan meet?
Khan is the junior welterweight WBA champion.... Maidana is the interim champion...let's say Maidana is still injured...the #1 spot is unrated...the #2 spot is Victor Ortiz. Why wouldn't that be a viable fight? Both Golden Boy promoted...easy fight to make. agreed? Katsidis is the WBO champ at LIGHTWEIGHT. I can't for the life of me figure out how that's a viable fight.
Let it out man, let it out. We'll see what happens, this is all speculation at this point, he probably won't fight again till after Ramadan anyway, so don't get your knickers in a twist. The man said on TV he wants Maidana next, let's hope it happens.
Nice. Khan's calling out a light-weight. And not even a good one at that. Brilliant. Go HBO !!! Go G !!!
It's viable because that's how HBO and G run this sport now. Feed lower weight tough guys with not a lot of upside to undefeated "unprovens," until such time as they're so over-rated that they can make unreasonable demands at the noegotiating table, and in turn, get away with fighting nobody when guys won't bend to his terms. Go Khan !!! Suck Jim !!! Suck !!!
This fight would be great in July. Thats 2 Months away, Maidana is injured and can't fight that date so they can fight later in the year.
and when the cameras were off he said he wanted to avenge Mitchell's loss. :dunno: seriously...he wants to fight lightweights which is why they campaigned for Marquez...when Marquez didn't bite they went after the lightest punching junior welter they could find. Isn't this obvious to you? All the guys in the division and he's looking south to fight a guy coming up. Marquez and Diaz are both Golden Boy fighters just as Ortiz is. So it's not a matter of Golden Boy not wanting to put two of their fighters in the ring... How else would you describe this other than ducking anyone who can punch?
As a fight fan I'd rather see Khan-Maidana for sure, and I still think that will happen. However, from a business perspective, Khan-Katsidis makes sense, whether you like it or not. Fact is, Khan is a CROSSOVER star on these shores, due to his Olympic success, Maidana's name means NOTHING over here to the mainstream, where as Katsidis has made a name for himself after the Mitchell win. That fight will SELL. Boxing is a business at the end of the day. Would I be happy with Khan-Katsidis? Of course not, I don't know how many times I have to point that out to people. What's getting banded about here is speculation from different sources, one site says one thing, boxingscene says Khan-Maidana is happening, sportinglife is saying Marquez...it's been 3 fucking days people! All I know is, the man himself was asked on live TV who he wanted next, and Maidana was the name which came out of his mouth. It's not Khan himself who has said other names like Marquez, Khan WANTS Maidana. Why don't we let things settle for a bit and THEN see what happens, before jumping all over specufuckinglation. When his next fight is actually announced, then we can discuss what's happening.
“We could do a split bill for television with Amir fighting in the UK and then go across to Manuel Márquez-Juan Diaz at Mandalay Bay,” Schaefer said. “That would be some double-header. I would then like to see the winner of the Márquez-Diaz fight face Amir. He has the style Americans love and he can be a big star in the US.” - Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions Not speculation...his promoter laid the gameplan...which is sad because Marquez, Juan Diaz, Katsidis and Victor Ortiz are all Golden Boy fighters...sad because the only three truly in the running are lightweights. Sad because Ortiz is the next highest available contender in the WBA...the "title" Ortiz holds. If you understand that boxing is a business then you understand why shit like this happens. Golden Boy knows what they have in Khan and they're waiting for the top contenders to take each other out so Khan has to face none of them. It's obvious what's happening here. Lastly, it's not specifically about Khan...I'm pissed ANYTIME I see this happen...said the same when Golden Boy allowed Juan Diaz to do the same...I've said as much about Andre Berto during his "title" run. Were you around during Jermain Taylor's "title" run? I fully suspect Khan's career to follow a similar path as Taylor's...once he starts fighting guys his size we'll see him getting waxed regularly...probably sooner than Taylor. Taylor never was a big puncher even against smaller guys. All kinds of flaws in Taylor's game similar to Khan...good jab but right hand suffered due to falling off balance...no threat of a lefthook after the right hand because he falls in and gets off balance. Khan can move around the ring better than Taylor "however" it's purely movement...no punching involved.
Sorry, but he does: - Represents his country at a sole representative at the Olympics aged 17 - Gets his face smashed in by a pillow fisted Willie Limond then gets up and breaks his jaw and stops him in a round. - Gets dropped by hard by Michael Gomez then gets back up and batters him. - Gets turned into a turtle against Prescott and still tries to get back to his feet. Twice. - Despite being a very rich young man (Khan is a millionairre a few times over) he chooses not to take the Hamed route by retiring once he takes a beating and elects to fight on regardless of his shitty chin. - Wins a title against a very decent champion at a higher weight and tells Werren and his over-protective bullshit to fuck off and moves to the States to prove himself. you can say what you like about Khan's chin, his basic, upright style or whatever else you care to slate him for, but the kid had balls. There is no doubt about that and it is the ONLY reason why I have come to respect the guy after spending quite a while wishing a series of brutal KTFO's on him. Oh yeah, and Khan wants to fight Maidana, as he made clear on Saturday. It is fucking G who want him to fight Katsidis instead: http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/more-sport/2010/05/18/khan-s-in-a-cash-cloud-115875-22266440/ MTF
As I said Muzse, it's been three days, it's typical that alot of names are gonna be banded about around this time, some which we like, some we don't. I won't pay too much attention until it gets serious. Also, Khan is better than Taylor, sure there are flaws in his game but you make it sound like he has no ability to improve.
Khans a lot more fluid than taylor ever was, don't really see any similarities between the two style wise.
Khan has had THREE fights at 140. Two of them have been against top ten ranked, established world level fighters at that weight and the other way his mandatory challeneger. So what are you on about, exactly? MTF :dunno:
It's easy to say something when you know it won't happen. Why not rematch Prescott? Prescott fought on the undercard Saturday night at 140. We've seen prescott outboxed since KOing Khan...he's got a gameplan on film to study and follow. That would be a huge fight in the U.K....wouldn't you say? A revenge match.
Yep, Khan is more than aware of the demand for him to fight Maidana, and said straight up when asked that he wants to fight him.
Then why look for lightweights if he's on such a good run against guys in his own division. In my last post I suggested rematching Prescott who's at 140 now...definite selling point...a rematch between those two. in fact...that would be a fight that could redeem Khan. why not make that fight?
Not really since Prescott got dominated by Mitchell. So you're saying Katsidis would be a disgrace (despite beating Mitchell), yet Prescott wouldn't (despite losing to Mitchell)? Make your mind up.
He said, as clear as day, that he wants to fight Maidana then the winner of Bradley and Alexanda. If he fights Katsidis next then that would also be a good fight because Kat is a legitimate puncher and has proven himself capable at the highest level. He is very good at sorting the good from the shit. Khan has fought two of the best ten 140lb-ers in the world in his last three fights and taken the unbeaten record from his mandatory challenger. Yes or no? :dunno: If he fights Katsidis he is ducking Maidana. If he fights Prescott you'll start with the 'Prescott has been exposed by Mitchell and is a 135lb-er' crap. The bottom line is that no matter who Khan fights you will find holes in it because you can't stand the bloke. MTF
