Admittedly a silly thread, will soon degenerate into pure nonsense...but I was thinking...why not have a little fun once in a while? Which name has produced the best fighters overall?

    For example: Michael

    Michael Tyson
    Michael Nunn
    Michael Spinks

  2. Ugotabe Kidding

Ugotabe Kidding WBC Silver Diamond Emeritus Champ

I think it comes down to most common names, such as James (Corbett, Jeffries, Toney, Smith) or Joe

  3. Buddy Rydell

    Buddy Rydell Boxingpress Alumnus

    Ray:
    Sugar Ray Leonard
    Sugar Ray Robinson
    Sugar Ray Seales
    Ray Austin
    Ray Mercer
    Sugar Ray Oliveira
    Ray Anis
    Ron "Stingray" McCarthy

Way to take the fun out of it. I was scraping my brain, thinking of names.

Maybe we could develop this thread to tag-team fights, for example the best Mikes against the best Rays. Wold that return the fun? :cheer:

I take it, then, you're including fighters whose birthname wasn't a match for their, "ring" name?

Not a bad idea. Interesting pound-for-pound matchings.

I put that in with tongue-in-cheek. I used to reading Boxing Monthly and there was a writer there with the pseudonym "Jim Bagg" created an award because this fighter was something 7-15-3 at the time. He was brought in to be a victim for some undefeated guy, but he wound up stopping the guy.

After that, Jim Bagg created an award called the "Stingray" to be handed out whenever a no-hoper did much-better-than-expected against an up-and-comer or contender...like Marion "Jackhammer" Wilson against Ray Mercer or Ross Puritty against Tommy Morrison (on the same card, incidentally).

    Great story, actually!

Both Puritty and Wilson drew against Morrison and Mercer on the same night.

Floyd Mayweather and Floyd Patterson. Can't think of any others and Patterson wasn't that great.

Along with my recent 'fights where different coloured shorts were necessary' thread, I think this discussion is pretty conclusive evidence of us needing a big fight to talk about and quick.

How many great fighters have been called John? I can't think of many!

How many ginger world champions has there been since fights were broadcast in colour?

 Danny Lopez or Ricky Hatton count? Both are borderline. Im struggling! I blame excessive boozing for the puzzling lack of good Scottish and Irish boxers. And for my shite trivia knowledge/memory for that matter.

  18. Neil

    Neil tueur de grenouilles

    Dargan
    Mildenberger

  19. Buddy Rydell

    Buddy Rydell Boxingpress Alumnus

    John Mugabi
    John Ruiz
    John David Jackson
    Mia St. John
    Chris John

Of these, I can't really call any of them great although I did see a GREAT issue of Playboy starring Mia.

Do we include Juan as well?
    Juan Manuel Marquez
    Juan Martin Coggi
    Juan Carlos Gomez

Can't think of many great fighters named John. Perhaps I'm not trying hard enough?

Na, strawberry blonde or auburn doesn't count, has to be proper ginger...

Joe seems to be a pretty good name for boxers...

    Joe Louis
    Joe Frazier
    Joe Gans
    Joe "Old Bones" Brown
    "Barbados" Joe Walcott

And if we are including non-birth names: Jersey Joe Walcott

BWJ, you are quite the historian, how many "true ginger" world champions have there been since fights were first broadcast in colour?

I remember starting a "Who is the Best Fighter Named Roy" topic duing the RJJ mania on SecondsOut when folks were opening all kinds of thinly disguised RJJ tribute threads...much like the not so subtle Mayweather theads.

Does "true ginger" mean "redhead"?? Like the Weasleys??

You need to suspend yourself just for mentioning "Ruiz" and "great" in the same post.

Yes "Ginger" is the British way of saying "Redhead".

I would say Floyd because he's better than all other boxers in history combined, + 2.
