I don't mean any disrespect, but who the fuck is this guy? He rails against Mercante and then slips Smoger's name in there like he's been talking about him the whole time.

EDIT: okay he was a former referee I guess.

I agree with him about Mercante, not on anything else.

Lipton has had a hard-on for the NYSAC and anybody who has anything to do with them, including every other referee ever employed by them ever since they stopped giving assignments to him.

You can read his rantings over at Cyberboxingzone.............and yes, they can get very Stinger-esque.

I once donated (it was initially supposed to be a loan) a hundred bucks to his legal fund to help him get his referee's license back, never even got a thank you for it.

He's burned lots of guys over the years and always claims to be a victim. I think he's a bit crazed also. :notallthere:

It's pretty funny that he insulted him about everything EXCEPT the job he did as a referee.

I personally think Mercante Jr. and Smoger typically do decent jobs. Their mannerisms or tone of voice really do not matter to me.

By the way, Mercante may use the word 'kid' often, but I thought he was extremely respectful of Foreman when things got tough. He called him "champ" more than any other term.

I also may be in the minority, but I think Mercante did the right thing letting Foreman deciding if he could continue. This wasn't about Foreman taking head shots and not knowing his condition. This was an injury and only Foreman knew if it was something he could fight through.

Lipton is passionate about boxing and boxers. Typically I like reading his stuff. This is an exception.

He also told him to "suck it up" about a thousand times. It's a term he uses quite a lot. To a professional boxer I would imagine that sounds a bit condescending coming from a referee. Especially after a guy has just taken a head butt or a shot to the nads. He also never lets a fighter take anywhere near the 5 minute break he should get without harassing him to start fighting again. He's usually rushing him back into action within seconds. He's an ADD addled, anxiety ridden, complete control freak, if that makes any sense.

I think it's ok for your corner to say shit like that, but it's not the place of the referee.

Oh, and what about him yelling to Manny Steward not to coach Yuri, when he handed him Yuri's mouth piece? WTF? Manny's not even his trainer, why the fuck would he "coach" him?

He's been doing that for years. He can't get jobs reffing anymore so he constantly throws other refs under the bus, whether they are good at what they do or not.

I don't think there's another referee in New York he's ever said a good thing about.

    Agree with you on Smoger.

I'm surprised more people don't remember Lipton, did a number of fights in the NY/NJ area, like De La Hoya-Leija, Jones-Brannon, Holyfield-Mercer.

Was also the third man in the ring for Morrison-Ruddock, I believe.

He reffed Jones/Brannon and criticizes Mercante for letting the fight go on? Roy was telling him to stop the fight and he didn't.:laughing:

Wasn't the HBO crew saying he took it to Steward to avoid Foreman's corner the opportunity to say something to him, and that the 'no coaching' part was his explanation to Steward about wh y he was being given the opposing charges mouthpiece?

And then Lipton complimented him on not accepting the towell. I agree that there are times when a towell should be ignored, but that was absolutely not one of them. A wuss hitter who has had his knee give out more than once, hobbling around, getting his ass kicked, and having no chance at all to win...but let's just wait til he gets ko'd because he said he wants to go on. 100% bullshit. I thought his corner was stupid to let it go on as long as it did.

    (1) Agree (2) Agree (3) Disagree in previous post. It wasn't if Foreman thought he could continue because it was obvious he couldn't. A Danny Williams or Vitali injury where you can't use one arm...maybe let those go because you can actually run around and hit with one arm...maybe....but when you knee gives out (Michael Grant), you are done. 12th round...perhaps let a guy hobble and see if he can make it, but leaving a guy out there for 5 rounds is assisted suicide.

i guess thats subjective. they are clearly two guys willing to let a fighter damn near die in the ring before they'll halt a prize fight

It's not the referee's job to judge a fighter's punching power based on pre-fight stats and factor it into his decision.

We aren't talking about judges, we are talking about a ref. Ref's have every reason to take a fighter's history into consideration. You think Arturo Gatti didn't get more leeway than most other fighters? You think he shouldn't have gotten that leeway?

Even if you are correct, and I don't believe you are, Mercante had 7 rounds to realize that Foreman punches like a girl. And it was obvious he wasn't going to recover from the bad knee.

Smoger's a good ref, although he's kind of funny with his excessive affection.

Maurice Harris gets up from a KD against Derrick Jefferson:

    "You made it baby!"

Brian Nielsen gets up from a KD against Mike Tyson:

    "You're BEAUTIFUL!"

And then when Nielsen retires on his stool, Smoger's like "I love you" and rests his forehead on Nielsen's forehead.
