Watching the gif. it's clear that Ward was lackadaisical and threw caution to the wind trying to get Boon out of there. Boone being the awkward dude that he is caught Ward with a punch he didn't see coming. Classic case of a young guy trying to look good for TV and getting ahead of himself.
