Calderon dose not have a huge fan base mainly for his lake of punching power and style. However there is no denying his boxing ability. He's one of the best pure boxers today. So the question is how good is he? How does he rank among Puerto Rico's best? This little guy has been fighting people 10-20 pounds heavier and he boxes circles around them with ease. I'm a fan of his boxing skills but I admit I need a cup of coffee before I watch one of his fights.

    Thoughts???

Top Ten, probably ranks around 6 or 7 in my book.

Perhaps the best pure Puerto Rican boxer ever.

I used to admire him and thought he should be HOF bound but he hasn't done much in the past few years.

He'll keep on going for awhile, don't expect him to retire anytime soon.

I would put him on the cusp of the top ten or fifteen, IMO. It's a Boxing super-power, with a glorious history in the sport. Ortiz is my pick for their best ever local product. Such an under-sold champion, too. I can see Calderon being a consensus top-10 inclusion, but you know, it's funny about Puerto Rico --- some of their greatest exports are not only forgotten internationally, but at home, too.

It was only the other day we had a thread here asking who was the Enchanted Island's greatest of all-time, & one Rican asked who Kid Cocoa was, citing no one even speaks of Cocoa locally.

Carlos Ortiz is the best ever Puerto Rican fighter, for sure... and Ramonza is right, he's the most underrated GREAT fighter ever

that said, I know my Puerto Rican friends will hate to hear this, but overall MEXICO > Puerto Rico

At least you are being honest, but the reasons are different that what they will get mad over.

Mexico has turned out much more fighters. It's like comparing Mexico to the Phillipines. Unfair comparison.

Now if they want to compare PR fighter A vs Mexico fighter B then that's a totally different debate altogether and on a level playing field.

If you compare sheer #s, then Mexico will always beat smaller nations out. That's how it goes.

Of course a country with a population of 111 million (Mexico) will produce more boxers than a tiny island with a population of 3.9 million (Puerto Rico). But still P.R. has produced more boxing champions per square mile than any other country in the world.

On the fact that a bigger country produces more boxers, yes. On the fact that a tiny caribbean island is almost on par with a country 100 times bigger, yup, on that too. Of course the 300 spartans were better warriors than the thousands armies of the persians, but eventually were defeated just because they were outnumbered.

In the lower part though I may change my mind if Calderon goes on to do what Hex he could and that's go to 130-135 and beat the hell out of the champions there.

i've sat through a few calderon fights (on undercard fights) in attendance yet i don't ever recall actually watching an entire fight.

w/ that said, he seems very, very difficult to land against.

he was actually more watchable early in his career soon after the olympics. he was a lot quicker then and threw more punches against limited opposition.

Trinidad would had eaten alive Chavez.
Wilfredo Vazquez would had stopped Olivares.
Sanchez would had never beaten a well trained, non-drug addict Gomez.

Trinidad-Chavez is hardly a fair fight. Trinidad is a much bigger man --- & Olivares, my vote for Mexico's best of all-time, is at least as good as the very best Rican (Ortiz).

because he couldn't lick the sack of Alfredo Escalera or Alexis Arguello, who were the REAL 130 pound champions of that era

he would have been beaten by the Chacon/Limon/Boza/Navarette quartet as well

    bet your life on it

    he was a PAPER CHAMP
