I can see a strong, respectable case for both men, but a lot of people I've noticed like one of these men to steamroll the other. Liston's jab is too strong, his reach too great, or Dempsey's too swift in his assault, too much man for Liston, & so on.

This fight wouldn't attract a dime from me. I could see either one knocking the other out.

Not like Dempsey would have fought him, he preferred slow, limited white guys.

Dempsey avoided black fighters like blacks avoided the KKK. And for similar reasons.

It's a hypothetical match. That isn't a factor. Besides, I think you have to lend space for the time in which Dempsey fought. It's not as if he retired yesterday.

In that case, Liston by murder, on the grounds of Dempsey being a small, technically limited fraud.

Dempsey had a broader skill-set than Liston, IMO, & he didn't want for form against big men.

I do think this could well be a quick blow-out for either man, but I can't see Liston as a shoo-in (or Dempsey, for that matter).

I cant see Dempsey being able to get past that jab... I think the more he presses, the cleaner he gets tagged and the better the chance is he gets hurt

I also don't see Dempsey as more skilled... he was definitely faster, but Liston was a superior technician in my estimation... I can't see Liston being given any trouble by the likes of Luis Firpo, for example

Dempsey had solid head movement and was quick of hand, but he had no jab to speak of, movement bothered him enormously, and he could be bulled backward, rendering him much less effective

I think Sonny either decisions him or stops him late, with a few bumps along the way courtesy of Dempsey's quick hands and power

you sure pulled that out of your ass, didn't you

the guy was not known as a bleeder at all, was never stopped or in danger of being stopped on a cut

his one stoppage defeat was a knockout loss to Fireman Jim Flynn early in his career, and that was a clean KO

there's nothing in Dempsey's whole career that would indicate a cut stoppage as a logical outcome

Well, we're not friends but "irregardless" does that mean any enemy of whiskey is an enemy of yours? :crafty:

Liston's jab is the biggest obstacle for Dempsey to overcome --- Dempsey was averse to powerful, consistent jabs, & he held his hands too low, too often for my liking. From Liston's standpoint, Dempsey's niftier footwork & faster assault will be critical elements to contain, & contain from the outset.

It's one of those fights, to me, which comes along & you have a difficult time envisioning the two men in the ring, for whatever reason. It's a tough call for mine.
