Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira II headlines UFC 119 in Indianapolis by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Jul 08, 2010 at 2:10 pm ET A rematch between heavyweights Frank Mir (13-5 MMA, 11-5 UFC) and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (32-6-1 MMA, 3-2 UFC) headlines September's UFC 119 event. UFC president Dana White today confirmed the fight with MMAFighting.com, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has confirmed the booking with a source close to one of the fighters. An official announcement of the fight and event is expected as soon as this week. UFC 119 takes place Sept. 25 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Nogueira vs. Mir II, of course, wasn't the first choice for the UFC 119 headliner. As MMAjunkie.com first reported, UFC officials planned to have UFC 116's main-event winner (champ Brock Lesnar and interim champ Shane Carwin) fight top contender Cain Velasquez at UFC 119. However, Lesnar, who earned a second-round submission win, and his wife are expecting the birth of a child in the next few weeks. Additionally, the booking would have required an abbreviated fight camp for the now-undisputed champ, who returned from a yearlong layoff (diverticulitis) for the fight. Mir, of course, won the first meeting with Nogueira with an impressive second-round knockout at UFC 92 in December 2008. Only after the fight did we learn that Nogueira was slowed by staph-infection recovery and a knee injury. Still, Nogueira praised his opponent's performance and said he was surprised by Mir's noticeably improved striking skills. Mir is just 1-2 since that big win, which marked Nogueira's first stoppage loss, with knockout losses to Lesnar and Carwin and a submission win over Cheick Kongo. The Carwin loss, which came at UFC 111 in March with an interim title on the line, marks his most recent outing. Nogueira, meanwhile, also is coming off a loss. In February, he was stunned by a first-round knockout at the hands of Velasquez. The former PRIDE star set up the No. 1 contender's bout after earning a decision victory over Randy Couture this past August. Little Nog and Ryan Bader is on the undercard, which is a good fight. Damn, all the rumors I heard had said Nog was gonna face Cro Cop in a rematch. But a rematch against Mir makes sense, and is a must win for both fighters. It's not a great PPV main event though. TFK
This is a Spike caliber card for sure. They better not try to sell this shit to us. I don't order all the UFC PPV's and this is one I would miss for sure if it's on PPV.
More rumored undercard fights.... -Evan Dunham (11-0) vs. Sean Sherk (32-4-1) -Melvin Guillard (25-8-2) vs. Jeremy Stephens (17-5) -Matt Mitrione (2-0) vs. Joey Beltran (12-3) -C.B. Dollaway (10-2) vs. Joe Doerksen (46-12) -Chris Lytle (29-17-5) vs. TBA
Better be on Spike or it's got failure written all over it. Guillard vs Stephens should be fun though.
I don't think it'll be on Spike because UFC 120, from England is supposed to be on Spike. I doubt they'd do back to back free shows. TFK
Does anyone expect Nog to win this? Everyone thought the first win was a fluke because of Nog's staph infection. His fight against Couture was supposed to be evidence of this, when in reality he was just fighting someone as worn out and slow as he is. Cain brutally stopped him, and Frank will win just the same, like he did in the first fight. Pointless rematch.
I agree, I expect Mir to win and if he doesn't it says more about Mir's decline than it does about Nog.
What a bullshit main event. Mir dominated him the last time and knocked him the fuck out why would anybody wanna see that shit again. NOG is done with. UFC should cut his ass
when dunham wins he should fight sotiropolous, thatd be a nice fight not sure how 155 is gonna work out, will the winner of florian/maynard get the winner of edgar/penn?
Man, Mir is such a headcase. I doubt he will be in anything close to good shape for this fight. The dude was talking about trying to get down to 205. It's a rematch that should happen given Nog's excuses after the first fight, but it isn't near PPV Main Event material. Combined this guys have been knocked out like 4 times in their last 5 fights. Hell, Bader-Little Nog is a bigger fight.
This isn't anything to get excited about. Mir probably likes it as a nice comeback fight. I'd have rather seen Mir against Cro Cop, and Nog against someone like Kongo.
I want Carwin-Cro Cop for Christmas. The raw, powerful slugger in Carwin against the refined, aging kickboxer in Mirko. Fun fight.
Of course it is. Don't be silly. But I don't think it would be. Carwin would not be the same 'go for broke' fighter after running out of gas against Brock. He would be more calculated and pick his shots. It goes at least 90 seconds.
That's the funny thing about Carwin, will he be the same fighter after what happened in the Brock fight? Will he be scared to go for broke if he thinks he's got a guy hurt? I'm looking forward to seeing how that fight effects him. People are saying Carwin will win easy if he fights Brock again, but is he going to bull rush lesnar like he did the first time? Will he try to pick shots and be more methodical and will that be effective?
Carwin could easily ragdoll Cro Cop and completely physically impose himself on him, and no he is that fighter period, that's his style, he's a blitz fighter. Besides part of the reason he gassed, was psychology, he won't have even a fraction of that psychological pressure that made him tighten up against Brock. Cro Cop doesn't even have the punch resistance like Brock has. Over/under 60 seconds, I'd take the under.
Not even a good comparison. Totally different styles here. I do agree Crocop loses though because he is shot.
