Matt Hamill vs. Tito Ortiz added to UFC 121 in October by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Jul 22, 2010 at 3:10 pm ET At UFC 121, teacher will meet student. A light heavyweight matchup featuring former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz (15-7-1 MMA, 14-7-1 UFC) and the man he coached on "The Ultimate Fighter 3," Matt Hamill (9-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC), has been added to the pay-per-view event. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) confirmed with sources close to the event that bout agreements were recently distributed for the contest. MMAFighting.com first reported the matchup. Featuring a heavyweight title clash between champion Brock Lesnar and challenger Cain Velasquez, UFC 121 is scheduled for Oct. 23 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. Ortiz coached opposite Ken Shamrock in the third season of "The Ultimate Fighter," and Hamill was one of four light heavyweights on "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy's" team. Hamill defeated Mike Nickels in the opening round of the tourney but was then forced out of the competition due to injury. Hamill enters the fight on an official four-fight win streak, though his December 2009 disqualification victory over Jon Jones is widely considered a defeat. A former collegiate wrestling champion, Hamill has shown an impressive striking game in recent outings with a stunning head-kick knockout of Mark Munoz at UFC 96 and a "Fight of the Night" slugfest victory over Keith Jardine at June's The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale. Meanwhile, Ortiz enters the contest in desperate need of a win. Despite a valiant effort against Forrest Griffin at UFC 106 this past November, Ortiz is 0-3-1 in his past four bouts. Of course, all four bouts have been against former UFC champions. Ortiz hasn't tasted victory since October 2006 in a 69-second win over rival Shamrock at The Ultimate Fighter 3 Finale. The positioning of the Hamill-Ortiz matchup on the UFC 121 card has yet to be announced, though the contest appears a likely a main-card
Speaking of Hamill how does that guy know if he won the decision or not when they announce it ? They nudge him or something?
Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez Matt Hamill vs Tito Ortiz Brendan Schaub vs. Gabriel Gonzaga Court McGee vs. Ryan Jensen Diego Sanchez vs. Paulo Thiago Jake Shields vs. Kampmann Jon Madsen vs. Todd Duffee Not a bad card at all!
Shaping up to be a very good card. Put's the UK UFC 120 show to shame, i mean, couldn't they have given at least one of those fights to the London show?! Surprised that Duffee wasn't thrown back in with the guy who beat him, i was almost sure that would be what they'd do...is he (sorry, name escapes me) injured? I think there's a very good chance that Hamill retires Ortiz.
I think Tito is more well rounded than Hamill for sure. Hamill has no ground game other than his wrestling control, has he ever even tried a submission? He's also a fairly shitty striker, and very slow. With that said, I think Tito is pretty much done and probably doesn't have enough left to win this one.
Actually, when I think about like this, it should be a fun, sloppy striking affair with lots of blood and physical damage.
I think it should be a good fight, I hope Hamill knocks Tito out though. He very well could, he's got some heavy hands.
Hopefully Tito retries and goes back to being the worst post-fight interviewer/announcer ever. That stuff was pure gold. He makes Mike Goldberg look like Howard Cosell.
