“I hate it when I read that James only has a puncher’s chance,†Sherman said. “Couture’s only got a wrestler’s chance.†I like that line. ::
I don't buy any of this bullshit that they are claiming in the Toney training for this fight. First they claim that he tapped King Mo, then they claim that he almost tapped Dean Lister, a master grappler? Now this amateur dude gets submitted as well? I think it's hilarious that they think they are going to try to trick Randy into fearing Toneys ground game. :laugh11:
Keep in mind that this article was from 'Ring' so....... Nevertheless, Randy Couture has never been submitted. Toney should be spending time practicing his standing grappling and fighting from the bottom.
Yeah not like Rogers or Carwin are super versatile and they had the allegedly two best heavyweights in the world on the brink of defeat by just using their hands. And James Toney could hardly look more useless than them, once they were on their back. For Toney being shot will be at least as big an obstacle as switching to MMA. At least Couture ain´t a spring chicken himself.
where did you get that from ??? Couture has been submitted before by at least Overeem ( Valentjin not Allistair )

While I think Randy should be able to win, I wouldn't be surprised to see Toney land something big. Toney isn't quickly becoming a grappling master though. Even people like BJ Penn aren't able to do something like that in a few months. Still, Toney has a long-established career and foundation in fighting from boxing. If a kickboxer like Crocop can transition, then James has a decent chance.
Younger for sure. He was still doing K-1. Toney might be in it just for the paycheque, but he's a coldblooded competitor regardless.
Over 15 years younger. Toney is shot. Have you seen him box lately? He has no coordination left. When he throws a punch with any kind of force, he trips over his own feet and falls forward. It's embarrassing.
It's really bad. And it's been bad for over five years now. Not only that, but Toney is obviously punch drunk. He's a mumbler. The guy has a way above average number of fights for this era... and that doesn't include all the sparring. And Toney sparred more than anyone.
5-minute rounds in training. I'm surprised you don't think Toney can make some noise, considering your views on MMA.
Don't get me wrong, Toney has a shot here. Couture has seen way better days himself. Toney has a small window early, since the fight starts standing. But come on, the guy isn't even in the top 10 or 20 at heavyweight in boxing, and we all know how shallow that division is now. He can't fight anymore. I wouldn't give a shot, punch drunk, pug in his 40s a good shot at doing anything.
I agree with this. I actually think that Toney has the lowest chance of all of the current boxing HWs out there. He isnt a KO puncher, poor cardio, no mobility, and likes to stay in the pocket trading punches employing the shoulder roll technique without even having to move his feet. All of these variables should lead to a pretty easy victory for Randy if he doesn't land that miracle shot early.
Yeah, but on the flip side Couture is 47 and has been hurt by almost every punch that he's been hit with in the last few years. Out of all the big name UFC HW Fighters out there, Couture is the easiest draw Toney could have gotten.
