Bravest fighters in history

Who are the bravest fighters in history?

Holyfield definetely belongs in this list. He went up from cruiserweight to heavyweight and took on the best the division had to offer. James Toney also comes to mind. He never avoided anyone. Rocky Marciano and Muhamed Ali were also true brave fighters.

What's this thread about?

Is it bravery in terms of who they decided to fight? Or is in bravery as in demonstrated bravery DURING fights?

Can be different.

 

Ali....yes.

Holyfield.....depends what slant you put on his PEDantics.

 

Anyway...

I think bravery is better demonstrated DURING fights than speculating on bravery based upon who they fought.

Bruce Seldon fought both Riddick Bowe and Mike Tyson..but he was as brave as an old woman.

 

Ali, Gatti, and Holy never had the courage to risk paralysis and launch themselves out the ring.... so I vote for Kermit.

Whenever I'm in a thread people think I'm going to bring up Floyd. What happens is that other people bring up Floyd (in anticipation of me) and then I react to it and get the blame.

Floyd hasn't yet demonstrated the type of bravery in the ring that would put him into the same category as Ali or Holyfield...simply because he hasn't had to. The Mosley and Corley fights...show that he has that potential though... opcorn:

I dont know where he ranks among the all time gutsiest, but Kevin Kelley was always a brave little fellow

Alfredo Escalera (watch the Arguello bouts... fucking christ, guy had no LIPS by the time the first one was over)
Carmen Basilio (I dont believe this guy knew what fear was, he would trade with George Foreman)
Matthew Saad Muhammad (for about 4 years, you couldnt deter this man with a tire iron)
Smokin Joe Frazier (remember it took Foreman SIX knockdowns to finally stop him and he has cursed Eddie Futch for 35 years for not letting him take blind swings at Muhammad Ali for 3 minutes)
Muhammad Ali (certainly guts personified)

some real old-timers:
Battling Nelson (the stories of the "Durable Dane" are simply ludicrous, but TRUE)
Harry Greb (blind in one eye for his last 90 fights, was still one of the best in the world during that time)
Owen Moran (not well remembered, but if you research his career he fought everyone with even half a name in those days, and was tough as nails)

I want to mention George Foreman for the Lyle fight. However, he never took Larry Holmes' challenge. I understand that decision based on styles. During fights however he was very brave.

 

Also consider that Foreman was afraid of losing to Lewis. Note he wasn't afraid of Lewis, but afraid of losing to him.

 

Aren't lots of fighters "afraid" of losing to opponents? Sometimes they don't fight them, but sometimes having fear just makes them prepare harder.

Foreman said he was also afraid of Frazier, Norton, and Quarry. But that didn't stop him from maiming two of those guys.

 

A prime Foreman would have raped Lewis.

I don't think you can be so sure. Foreman relied heavily on his jab to confuse and distract his opponents such that his right hand arrived without warning. He'd have trouble doing that to Lewis.

In fact, Lewis would have less trouble than Foreman landing his own right hand, and there's not been a single fighter in Lewis's long career whose game plan wasn't shaped by Lewis's right hand.

 

Adamek is gotta be one of them
