How can people rate Mayweather this highly as a welterweight when his opposition has been so-so at best... seriously, where is the REAL GOOD, PRIME Welterweight that Mayweather has fought This is Donald Fucking Curry we are talking about here... Mayweather's gotta do more at this weight than edge a tired old Oscar De La Hoya, beat up a near-shot old Shane Mosley, get the best of gutless mental midget (and really Junior Welter) Zab Judah and blown up (and to me, hardly all that great to begin with) Ricky Hatton for me to start saying he can get in there with a guy who at his best was a monstrously talented and skilled REAL welterweight Some of you guys are fucking off your rockers
Why would he duck that queer, when he was willing to fight real men like Corrales and Castillo? :stir:
Not in terms of the relative threats at the time. I mean...how many times do i have to explain this before you knuckleheads get it? Corrales was THE biggest threat to Mayweather at 130lbs...considered more dangerous than eitehr casamayor or Frietas at that time. Castillo was THE toughest son of a bitch at lightweight and Floyd fought him in his first fight at that weight. Xplosive...leave the mayweather hating to idiots like double L, you know better than that! :kick:
Yeah but EVERYONE half decent wrecks Mayweather according to you. Who did Curry beat that was close to being on mayweather level. And NO McCrory was not.
You can try to "explain" it forever, but it's still a bogus theory meant to make Mayweather's opposition seem better than it really is. No matter how you try to bamboozle everyone with this relative threats BS, a prime Donald Curry is a significantly better fighter than anyone Mayweather fought at the time the fights took place. Fighters like DLH and Mosley at their respective bests are comparable to Curry (even tho' I wouldn't pick either over him prime for prime), but both fighters were far removed from their best days when Mayweather decided to fight them.
Absolutely. Most of the folks around here either don't know or choose to ignore what a special fighter Curry was until he was unable to make the weight at 147 any more. Curry wins this one without much doubt on the scorecards.
I don't have any Curry fights on tape so I haven't studied him. I have to watch more of his fights, but based on the McCrory fight...which everyone touts as his best moment, I tend to think Floyd out points him. if Curry lands it's one thing, I don't think he gets in that shot. From what I saw, Curry had a WIDE based when he punched. I can't see Floyd not sliding and giving angles to the point Curry never gets set to punch. (Mind you...this is only going off the McCrory fight) I didn't see much if any head movement from Curry. Basically holds his hands high looking to parry punches...can't see him parrying too many of Floyd's shots. I see Floyd picking him apart and winning a decision.
But you'd pick prime Forrest over Floyd, correct? Put it this way Muzse.... Curry was a quicker, more talented, and overall more skilled techncian then Forrest... and he was a very BIG welter at that. I think that Curry is one of THE worst matchups for Floyd at 147. Is Floyd overall the better fighter in a P4P sense? Hell yeah! But was he better than Curry at 147? Not at all!
Bullshit. Mayweather is a top twenty ATG talent IMHO and I'd pick him to beat many other great fighters, especially at 130 where he was pretty much imperious. But at 147 he has proven precisely fuck all in the near five years he has been the 'champion' there. Absolutely fuck all. He beat a decidedly weak champion and a mental midget to win his titles and has 'defended' them against a career 140 pounder, a man who did most of his best work at 130lbs or less and an inactive 39 year old. What amongst that lot can make anyone think he beats Curry, once considered the P4P best fighter on the planet and one of the best welterweights ever? Answer: Nothing MTF
Do note I pointed out Curry's wide base. Forrest fought tall and laid back and let guys come to him. Forrest was more of a pure boxer and used his height and reach well. I didn't see that from Curry. Again, I'm only basing it on the McCrory fight I watched on Youtube but Curry seemed very ordinary to me. Wide base, hands up by head, elbows tucked...zero head movement. Watch vernon's fights....Vernon knew how to use his jab....an elongated jab. Curry could jab but he was far more squared up than Forrest. I can't see Floyd not taking advantage of Curry.
Watch Curry's fight with Nino Larocca. Not that Larocca was the same class as Floyd, but its closest thing to Floyd's style that Curry faced. The way Don took him apart and destroyed him is pretty to watch. Curry had the handspeed and the timing to find Floyd, and DEFINITELY had the power to hurt and do damage to Floyd. Also, Curry's ring IQ was much higher than DLH and Shane. And this is a PRIME Curry we're matching Floyd with. Not a washed up Oscar & Shane.
Word, though my personal favourite is the way he took Colin Jones, who was himself an underrated, quality operator, and smashed him to bits. Very impressive. MTF
Curry would simply outclass Floyd easily. Curry was one of my personal favorites as a kid growing up. He was such a top shelf technician and athletic talent. As great of a talent as Floyd is, this is simply not his best weight by far. Curry by easy UD
You neglect to mention that those fights were at 130 and 135 what "toughest SOB" WELTERWEIGHTS has Mayweather fought exactly? This is DONALD CURRY here
I don't know about this... Ive watched a few of his fights on YouTube now to refresh my memory and I still see the same guy. Great power, but basically stands with a WIDE base, giving up his height, must have feet planted to punch and gloves basically under his chin, elbows tucked with NO head or upperbody movement. I just can't see him getting off consistently against Floyd. I'm watching those fights seeing how poor Curry's footwork and balance could be....outside of landing something huge...just can't see him taking Floyd apart. In regards to his "handspeed" it's relative to the guys he fought. Floyd clearly has been reflexes, timing and handspeed than the guys we saw Curry in with. It's forseeable that Floyd's speed bothers the non-upperbody movement having Curry and keeps him in his shell. I still take Floyd in this one....bad matchup for Curry. You guys are talking about Curry like he had the fluidity of Ray Leonard....now Leonard would beat the dog shit out of Floyd.
