True...but anyone who would have picked tarver to KO Roy the first time would have had nothing upon which to base that pick,. Sure it happened...but it was not a logical pick because Roy hadn't shown that vulnerability up to that point. Same with Tyson vs Douglas. Shit based on this logic..why not pick Bernard Hopkins to KO Hagler? Shit..Tyson was knocked out by Douglas wasn't he?
Your logic is ridiculous. Without showing signs of getting knocked out it's unreasonable to surmise a guy can be knocked out. That's foolish. Hell, no one would have thought Camacho would hurt let alone KO Leonard. Leonard hadn't shown signs of getting knocked out. There's a huge difference in skill when talking about Leonard vs anyone Floyd has ever faced. Add to the fact that if Leonard had a full day to rehydrate like guys do today...his size, reach, his speed, boxing ability, ring smarts. All things I can't see floyd dealing with. Especially with the young Leonard. For the millionth time...I hate Leonard more than I hate Floyd...certainly have hated him much longer so there isn't an anti-floyd sentiment here...especialy considering I don't believe for a second a guy like Curry beats Floyd.
Dude...it's YOUR logic not mine. Tyson hadn't shown signs of getting knocked out prior to douglas. Anyway..I guess you're saying that Floyd getting rocked by Corley, Mosley and to a lesser extent..Judah...means he's shown that he can be knocked out. Well..ANYONE can be knocked out....but in none of those fights did Floyd look close to being knocked out. He got a little buzzed and recovered quickly each time. If anything it shows that he is difficult to get stopped...given his good defense in addition to this.
As great as Sugar Ray was, I think his punching power gets overrated a bit. 25 KOs in 36 wins, with 69 % is not a bad statistic considering his level of opposition but not a remarkable one either considering in turn that with his speed and skill he was able to hit pretty much anyone. That combined to the fact that Mayweather has shown a sturdy chin and seems near-unhittable when he wants to be, I don't believe Ray would knock him out. Leonard would win handily on points since Mayweather as the smaller guy really has no weapon against him, but I see Floyd lasting the distance. Floyd vs Curry is of course somewhat of a guessing game since we haven't seen much of Floyd at 147 but if I had to make a bet I think I'd take Floyd. I just believe he has the talent needed to win, even though he hasn't made much use of it
You would have been better suited to agree with me in the beginning instead of bothering with Floyd-apologist responses.
yeah but Anyone includes guys like hagler, McCall, Monzon, Robinson and others who YOU would never pick to be knocked out.
Robinson was stopped once in 202 professional fights, and that was from heat exhaustion in a fight he was winning by a light year, not punches Monzon never stopped in over 90 fights Hagler never OFF HIS FEET in almost 70 fights, and he took BOMBS from some very very great punchers I'd say when its all said and done, these guys are PROVEN commodities here... they DON'T GET KNOCKED OUT some guys just dont get stopped no matter what... seirously is there anything anybody could have done to Kid Gavilan that Ray Robinson or Ike Williams or two dozen other terrific fighters did to him? Guy was down ONCE in well over 100 fights, so many of them against the best of the best and he was never within a mile of getting stopped It would be idiotic to come in here and say so and so KO5 Kid Gavilan, because there would be nothing to support it unless the so-and-so was a Light Heavyweight or something What punches could possibly be exploded on the face of Juan LaPorte that werent all already demonstrated by Sanchez, Gomez, Pedroza, Nelson, Tszyu, Chavez and a dozen other top guys that would result in him being floored (something that never happen or even came close to happening) That said, we are talking about Floyd Mayweather as a WELTERWEIGHT fighting the only really good Welterweight he has ever fought here... hes NOT proven in the chin department up at this weight If this was 130 or 135, I'd be more than happy to co-sign that anybody predicting a KO of Mayweather is an idiot but this is 147, and despite how bad you want to believe it, he has yet to beat a prime welterweight so yeah his chin is still a question mark here and lets not kid ourselves here... Mayweather has always had a good chin but he has been hurt by Corley, judah and Mosley... when the hell did you ever see Hagler or McCall wobbled? you cant compare his chin to theirs... those guys had UNUSUAL chins, same with LaPorte now, my gut belief is that even though he's not proven as a true welterweight, Mayweather is so skilled and talented and tough ENOUGH that stopping him would be VERY difficult even for a big crisp-hitting welter like Curry... but to say its ridiculous because he had a good chin at the lower weights is not accurate Now, if he were to fight Pacquaio and take a bunch of bombs from him (like it or not, a proven puncher at 147) and not get floored or not get close to being stopped, that'd be different... but he hasnt fought anyone like that this high up
heres a dilemma for Sly, mythical matchup: PBF versus Jesus.... go does jesus land the big right and smite the pretty boy or does floyd counter "the heavenly beard" all night to a comfortable UD?
This. Floyd has shown enough vulnerability to show that he's stoppable. He's also shown enough resilience and adaptability for us to know it's a very big task. But there's no comparison to make between saying Floyd can be stopped and saying Hagler can be stopped.
PBF wins by TKO no doubt. He already fought two Jesus' (Chavez) and both were stopped from accumulation of punishment. Anyone called "Jesus" is likely to be a latino. As such PBF wins..he's the latino killer!
Don't get me wrong... I'm not comparing Floyd's durability to hagler's. I'm just pointing out the errors Muzse's faulty logic of saying anyone can be stopped...so we don't need evidence of vulnerability to predict a knockout.....by going to the extreme case to expose it. Floyd's been shaken a couple times but in neither case was close to being stopped..and he hasn't be legitimately dropped as yet either. Couple that was his known defense and smarts and stamina.....and it's a tough task.
very fair and I agree. I would not predict a Flyd stoppage with any cavalier attitude... to me, even up here at 147 where I still maintain he has much to prove, It would take an extremely gifted welterweight puncher for me to predict a KO (say Robinson or Hearns, and thats about it) and even then it wouldn't be a sure pick on my part, and it would likely have to be in the later rounds and thats going off of what I know RIGHT NOW... should he prove more against a real 147 threat (as he still has prime enough skills to prove) I might rule out KOs altogether... were this 1992 and we were talking about Pernell Whitaker fighting good welterweights, I would have the same feeling and since he proved to be one hell of a welterweight, I would now pick Pernell to safely navigate his way to not being stopped against even those welterweighst that I dont think he could have any chance of defeating (Robinson, Hearns, Leonard)
Wow....This is a good match up. I can remember the beauty of Donald Curry's game with the sharp, accurate punches and his uncanny ability to push forward offensively while remaining relatively difficult to hit. His jab, right hand, left hook combo was as quick and effortless as almost anyone's. He was also systematic and always thinking. He created openings and did a terrific job of setting guys up. But I also remember how the movement and hand speed of Honeyghan absolutely limited Curry to throwing single shots. It forced him to move his feet and not simply shuffle forward throwing punches as he typically did. He was never comfortable in that fight. I know the excuses. Everything from weight issues to drug problems to the headbutt. But the truth is Honeyghan had a skill set and punching power that gave Curry trouble. He had power from off balance angles and enough hand and body speed to make Curry unable to throw his trademark combinations without getting hit. Mayweather is not the same fighter as Honeyghan. In my opinion he doesn't have near the welterweight power Lloyd had. But Floyd has far better hand speed and would likely be even more difficult for Curry to throw combos against. Albeit for different reasons, I can easily see Floyd making Curry hesitant to let loose with more than one punch at a time like Honeyghan did. After than happens it's a pot shot war that Floyd wins. The other thing to remember about Curry is that he did get hit. His defense was solid especially for a guy that loved to punch, but he wasn't an impossible target to tag. And with Floyd's accuracy, the chance goes up exponentially. Good fight. But I think Floyd wins a close decision.
