Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire’s wish to get a crack at WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando “Cochilito” Montiel may be fulfilled based on Top Rank promoter Bob Arum’s plans

Arum told*BoxingScene.com that he is “figuring where to put it and one of the possibilities is the Julio Cesar Chavez-Miguel Cotto fight, to make that (Donaire-Montiel) a co-feature on the card.

Arum said the fight date is December 4 and it would “probably be in Las Vegas.”

Donaire who has been chasing the big names in boxing has made it clear he would no longer fight as a super flyweight because of his having to struggle to make the weight and said he wants to move up to bantamweight or even super bantamweight to win a second world title.

Donaire is the current WBA super flyweight interim champion and has indicated if he can’t get a title shot at Montiel he would be willing to move up to super bantam to challenge WBO champion Wilfredo Vasquez Jr.

Meantime American trainer Rick Stehely who steered Manny Pacquiaoto his first world title – the WBC flyweight championship which Pacquiao won by a stunning eighth round knockout over Thai hero Chatchai Sasakul in December 1998, believes Donaire can follow Pacquiao’s footsteps and win “maybe five or six world titles” in different weight divisions.

Stehely had predicted before Pacquiao won the flyweight title that he would keep growing and win four world titles but he noted he won seven and maybe can win an eighth.

The trainer was totally impressed with Donaire telling us “I think he is absolutely sensational. This guy’s got skills beyond skills. I mean he’s really, really good.”

If the card gets rounded out with a couple more solid matchups, I might have to give in and buy.

Just read that Showtime is having another tournament at 118 with (tentatively scheduled) Mares-Darchinyan winner meeting the winner of the Perez-Agbeko rematch. They initially wanted Donaire and Montiel too for another super six but big Bob refused. Fuck Bob Arum and all his in-house BS

Montiel-Donaire is a good fight, but is Arum just droppping Chavez Jr's name with every fighter in the Top Rank stable?

Yep. Fuck Bob. Although Donaire and Montiel would've been the two best fighters in the tournament (on paper) and with the most to lose. Especially considering Donaire already embarrassed and wiped his ass with Vic. Then again, Agbeko has a win over Vic as well. Makes you wonder how in the hell Vic got in the tournament. :giggle:

Chavez Jr. is a beast. I dont know if he beats cotto, but that man is the goods. I have been telling you guys since he became pro. No amateur exp., learning on the job, i like where this kid is at.

I think Chavez Jr. will be a tough fight for Cotto and will possibly beat him.

I think he might have if the fight had occured right after Cotto's matchup Pacquiao.

And i mean afterward as in right after Manny left the ring.

I like watching Chavez, too. I think he's well schooled & he's ultimately come out BETTER for not having a stinking amateur career but learning as a pro.

But I think 'beast' is just about the least appropriate word for him possible ....the guy's got very little natural talent for boxing. Poor concentration, physically weak, slow, etc. I hope he does well against Cotto and stays viable because I like watching him but I see Cotto eating him up. Just a different class of born natural talent.

On the contrary, I think given his lack of experience, no amateur career, and apparently late start in the sport, you have to believe that Chavez Jr. has a lot of natural talent.

He learned on the job like his dad and he had that foundation of schooling as well as all the machinery behind him to be matched perfectly. He's well schooled, being who he is, given the way he's grown up and the contacts his dad would have had to help him learn. But that doesn't constitute talent in my book. He doesn't have the physical or psychological gifts of somebody with real talent, IMO.

His Dad for instance had concentration and focus like a feral animal. That's a talent Jr definitely doesn't have, never mind the obvious lack of physical gifts, like speed, power, strength, etc. He's just been taught well, I think.

I haven seen him at times have that killer insticts. Especially when he is ripping shots to the body. but i think he is still learning.

All this cage fighting has really destroyed your eye for good fighters, or "beasts", as Joe Rogan would put it.

    Chavez Jr. is awful.

Showtime's idea hit a wall when the network was informed that Montiel and Donaire were not interested in participating. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, who promotes both boxers,*disclosed that*Montiel is not interested and Donaire refuses to take part in the tournament without Montiel being involved.

"Donaire won't go in because Montiel won't go in. So those two guys are out. They're going to fight each other," said Arum. "And their fight will not be part of the tournament. Showtime did approach us for Donaire and for Montiel to go in. But Montiel refused, and Donaire won't go in if Montiel is not in the tournament."

Gary Shaw, who promotes*Perez and Agbeko, is not convinced with*Arum's version of the story. He believes Arum*was against the idea of having*his boxers locked into the tournament. Over the last few weeks, Shaw has accused Arum of refusing to match his fighters against those not promoted by Top Rank. Shaw views this as another move by Arum to keep everything in-house. Even if that's the case, Shaw can't*believe*how any promoter*can*pass on the opportunity to secure three guaranteed television dates for their fighter, and three guaranteed pay days.

"Who would pass on three guaranteed TV dates?" -*Shaw said to BoxingScene.com.

Donaire's manager, Cameron Dunkin, told BoxingScene that his fighter was interested in participating, with or without Montiel being involved, but Top Rank presented Donaire with several lucrative alternatives.

Arum wants to stage Donaire's fight with Montiel in a high profile*spot on the November 13 undercard to Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito, or place it on the December 4 undercard to a planned fight between Miguel Cotto and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

"Top Rank presented him with several options.*Me and Nonito*discussed those options and made a decision," Dunkin told BoxingScene.
