That's what Cameron Dunkin told Dan Rafael...that the release was moved up from October 2nd.

The plan for GBP is to have him fight twice this year...first in October.

Good news. I didn't expect much from the guy before he went to jail, and I still don't... but he's fun to watch. And if he can get back to where he was I'd still really like to see him fight Angulo.

That doesn't bode well. Kirkland is strong and in great shape.... not much else. I wonder if anyone will work him the way Wolfe was working him.

The Anne Wolfe way of training that was previously used by John Brown's trainers...work, work, work, live in the jungle, live off of bugs and bark...
all of that stupid shit is nonsense.

I don't think you necessarily need a lot of experience to be a good trainer, but you should have least have a basis for what you are doing. Being tough like a trained army ranger is worthless in the ring.

Not if that's the only thing you have going for you. Kirkland doesn't have much for talent.

Ann Wolfe's Methods Aren't Quite THAT Extreme & they're More BOXINGcentric than the 1's Used by John Brown's Trainers...

More EXTREME Methods Such as Those, AREN'T for Every Fighter, but it Undeniably BUILDS Conditioning & DETERMINATION...& They're Usually Born Out of NECESSITY...Every Gym DOESN'T Have State-of-the-Art, 24 Hour Fitness Level Equipment...

Good. Fun fighter I'd like to see again. Hopefully he stays away from guns from now on.

Maybe it's not too late for him to learn a few fundamentals from another trainer. Maybe keep on Wolfe as a conditioning coach.

I think Angulo would murder Kirkland. A more even fight might be Kirkland vs Fernando Guerrero.

    agREED.

Sometimes when new trainers come in trying to add "subtle nuances" to a fighter's game it does nothing to improve them. It just renders what they used to excel at before less effective.

Let Kirkland be who he is. Just work on any bad habits without trying to change him.

Yeah, I'm not sure how much talent he has...he has some, obviously, but I really don't like some of his footwork and the way he leaves himself open.

It makes for some entertaining fights, though, and he will beat fighters by simply imposing his will and applying pressure.

I would say he's a great "tv fighter", because he's had some great fights on tv, but then I remembered his fight with Brian Vera and had second thoughts.

I agree with this...work on his defense and staying focused behind the jab and let him be James.

Kirkland's Always Reminded REED of a BETTER, SMALLER Version of Former "Friday Night Fights" Banger, Julian Letterlough...GREAT "TV Fighter", like U Said, but Definitely LIMITED...

Letterlough's a great name to mention...entertaining fighter, and his fight with Gonzalez was a classic.

Kirkland is a guy I would like to see get on FNF, maybe even become a regular on there...he's the kind of fighter people will make a point to watch.

Kirkland is a carbon copy of Frank "the animal" Fletcher. And if he ever fought Angulo, it'd look similar to what Juan Roldan did to Fletcher.

I think people are forgetting that James Kirkland was known as a slick boxer with good skills throughout his amateur career. The manner in which he currently fights is something he consciously choose to pursue. James has a lot more dimensions than he's getting credit for on this thread.

Do you think he will go back to more of that style after prison, or if there's a change in his corner?

Admittedly, I haven't seen extensive footage of him as an amateur, but his balance can get really bad in the ring as a pro.

He WASN'T Terribly SUCCESSFUL in that Role Though...Kirkland WASN'T Compiling NATIONAL Titles or Runner Up's @ a Shitload of Tournaments & he NEVER Made a Ripple as a Potential Olympian or Alternate...

Kirkland has an amateur record of 134–12. and won the Silver Gloves championship four years in a row and lost on a controversial decision to James Patterson in the finals of the National Golden Gloves. Instead of going to the Olympics, Kirkland turned professional to provide for his family. - Wikipedia

That's a good amateur career. He was also a 3 time Texas State champ...and remember he could have done more if he didn't go pro at 17 years old.

This is a quote from Nonito Donaire

Nonito's quote doesn't exactly support what I said about him being more of a boxer in the amateurs but you get my point nonetheless. James is more than a crude slugger a la Julian Letterlough, he is IMO a classy fighter who chooses to be overaggressive at times which leads to him getting hit more than he should, and getting sloppy, and off balanced.

awesome. come in 2nd place, but win the outstanding boxer of the tournament. And the guy who beat him doesn't even sound a bit annoyed by that fact.

So the guy loses to a flyweight as an amateur and all of a sudden he's a master boxer?

Just kidding. Thanks for the info.

I trained a kid that went up against Kirkland years ago in the ammys.

While I like James now, I didn't think he was that great as an amateur as my guy had 4 fights compared to his 40 and gave him a run for his money.

In fact, I had forgotten all about Kirkland for the longest.

Kirkland and Chris Henry had one of the most brutal and intense sparring sessions ever seen in Houston boxing history.

Say what you will about Wolfe's methods or scientific approach (or lack thereof) but she seemed to have that kid's ear, I got the sense he gave a shit what she thought

Kid has to be a banger and worker in order to be any good, there isn't a lot more there... like the old saying "his strength is his strength"

I think he'll be worse off for not having her
