Sauerland made some comments about his interest in a Super Six a couple months ago, and now Steve Kim is reporting that Gary Shaw has told him that Ken Hershman of Showtime is interested in doing that next year.

The SuperSix tournament is the one bright spot on boxing disastrous record. One at cw would be good as they'res a lot of good fighter who are really underexposed in that division ( at least in N. A. ). But they said they were gonna make one at Bantamweight first, any idea who the fighters would be ???

NOT the Division REED Would've Selected for a "Supet 6" Styled Tournament, but an EXCELLENT Idea, Nonetheless...

it's the perfect division, actually, in terms of feasibility, since nobody knows who the fuck any of the cruiserweights are, making a tournament of this kind the fighters' best option.

Well, Top Rank didn't want to include Donaire and Montiel, but Abner Mares-Vic Darchinyan, Yonnhy Perez-Joseph Agbeko could still be made.

Yeah, even American Steve Cunningham isn't well known in the States (even after the Adamek fight)...and signed with a European promoter in Sauerland.

to be honest, if Donaire and Montiel aren't in it, it would pretty much be a waste of time

So who's in this thing? Steve Cunningham, Marco Huck, Krystof Wlodarcyk? Danny Green? Dennis Lebedev? Guillermo Jones?

showtime leaning toward doing the bantamweights sooner because they are deeper? Surely, that's not what he meant. The point of a super 6 is that it only has to be 6 deep.

    going to boxrec:
Cruisers: Foreigners: Huck (2), Green (3), Lebedev (4), Yoan Hernandez (5), Wlodarczyk (8)

USA and North America: Cunningham (1), Flores (6), Afolabi (7), Ross (13)

I think the first 3 foreigners listed plus Cunningham, Flores, and Ross is pretty good.

And I would really prefer that Herbie Hide get into the mix, too.

    Bantams:
US based guys: Yonnhy (3), Mares (6), Agbeko (9), Morel (10), Avalos (16)

    Foreigners: Montiel (1), Darchinyan (2), Hasegawa (4), Moreno (5), K Kameda (8),

Okay...that clearly is deeper, haha, and far easier to come up with a super six, but cruisers are deep enough.

What Shaw meant to say was that his stable is deeper at 118.

Well, those would be the two main headliners in a tournament with those six fighters in it, so I understand what you're saying, but then, the reality is that they are much more established, they don't need to be in a tournament with some of the other fighters.

If Mares-Darchinyan and Perez-Agbeko happen, and the winners fight each other, then the winning fighter emerges as someone who would be a much-anticipated opponent for the winner of Montiel-Donaire if it happens...if the four-fighter tournament happens, you'd like to see Showtime make a strong push for the winner to fight the winner of Montiel-Donaire, again, if it happens.

But maybe the more direct approach in this division is appropriate, because 118 is not a "box office" division. Kessler, Froch, Abraham...they're legit "headliners". Mares isn't. Perez, Agbeko...not really. Darchinyan's a name, but then he has losses to two other fighters who would've been involved (in Donaire and Agbeko).

    He's involved because he's a Shawtime fighter.

I love tournaments but I am not a huge fan of the Super 6 format. I would prefer 8 guys and single elimination.

Cunningham will win this and restore a certain amount of pride to the USA. He has already beaten that charity-case in Germany and at least gave Adamek and Wlodarczyk some good fights.

Since it's likely Marco Huck would be in a Super Six if it happens...here's footage of him against Matt Godfrey from earlier today:

And from not too long ago, Dennis Lebedev-Alexander Alekseev, which Lebedev won to become his mandatory.

I betcha Sauerland will put Huck in the Super Six and declare Huck vacates the WBO title, because the tournament is bigger than the belt. Huck so wants nothing to do with his mandatory Lebedev. :TLC:

I used to think the same thing about Huck until he wiped out a friend of mine, Adam Richards, in three.

Richards trained a solid three months for that title fight, waking up at 4:30 A.M. and was running up to 8 miles a day, and worked as hard as any fighter I have ever seen.

Huck made a believer out of me that day, and reminds me style-wise of Carlos Monzon, though not as good.

Richards said he could feel the guy's fists through his gloves, felt like he had rocks in his wraps.

I am not saying Huck will win this tournament, but he'll be very tough to beat as he is in great condition and has gained confidence and style.

Godfrey fought as if he was terrified by the guy, thanks for posting that video up, MK.

Some updates on this from http://twitter.com/danrafaelespn.

The tournament is apparently not tied to Showtime...Sauerland says he wants to start it in December with a unification involving Huck...which is something Huck-Lebedev would not be.

Cruiserweight doesnt really merit super six treatment, none of these guys are that good even though it might be affordable. There are about 2-3 "important" fights at the weight, they would be better off just putting the money towards them instead.

Well Sauerland will control at least three, maybe four fighters in the tournament, which will guarantee a much faster tournament than the SMW version. As it stands it will likely include all major champions in a faceless division. I think that is the best they could have done for the division and the fighters. The winner will be the undisputed unified champion, which almost guarantees an immediate huge payday against a Klitschko or Haye.

With Huck (WBO), Cunningham (IBF), Lebedev and Wlodacrzyk (WBC) they have the four best cruiserweights. With Herelius or Brudov (WBA) as the 6th man, they will have all the champions. I could do without Hernandez though, who´ll be a sacrifical lamb.

If they took the Macca/Frenkel winner and Brudov or Herelius, they´d have the six best available. Guillermo Jones might be the best of the bunch, but somebody, who only fights every two years would likely interfer with the schedule at some point, so he has no right to complain imho.

Sauerland says he wants to make Huck-Lebedev in the next 3-5 months.
