I think this woulda been interesting, I'll come back with my enormously important & anticipated thoughts later. How does this go down?
I'll be honest --- while I have a healthy respect for Michalczewski (just correct spelling of his surname puts me ahead of most of the pack, in my experience ::) & have been at pains to point out some of his finer attributes to many distrusting Americans during my time living there, I cannot see much of a chance for him to win this. Jones takes a comfortable UD, in my mind. Something like 9-3.
It took me until the doping scandal to get Pacquiao right without google. Unless Darius mounts a comeback, KOs Klitschko, gets caught roiding, then kills Obama the day after and claims he did it for Zeus, Im pretty much resigned to never getting his name down.athetic:
Ain't nobody can't be beat, no how, never, my friend. Not in no boxing. I give Hopkins a fine chance to edge out Jones in 98 for instance. By 2000 I'd favour him.
His surname, not mine, is what I meant to say. It's quite easy, though! Michalc --- part one, zewski (very easy) part two. Done!
True...but Roy was as difficult to beat at that time as any fighter in history. Let me put it that way if you prefer...
I agree. Roy was a phenom and fought quite a bit of different styles and guys of different sizes. Roy's resume is much deeper than "civil servants" but it's not quite stellar either. It's not an argument of who's responsible or any other tired argument. However we didn't see him againt too many guys who were excellent at certain styles. Most didn't even have one attribute that was much to speak of.
i never thought much of DM's chances here... he was steady and tough and more often than not he got the job done but I always thought he'd have too much trouble with the speed difference and all of those weird angles from Jones... I just see Jones being cautious and maybe early on he buzzes DM with one impossibly quick shot he doesnt see coming and its enough to make DM respect him enough that he becomes too passive and allows Jones to comfortably potshot to a decision win... 9-3 type of fight
No. RJ would have done so, for the first 2 rounds, then lapsed back into Roy Jones mode, lost some rounds, and won a clear, but moderately close, decision. Really hard to see a guy like DM doing any worse than Harmon, or Reggie Johnson did.
exactly... he'd start off, do something physically amazing, it would make Dariusz a bit weary, and then Jones would go into safety pot-shot mode and DM would outwork him here and there but not with enough conviction to in any way alter the outcome
really? how many rounds did jones jr lose in those two fights combined? mind you that the harmon fight came well after 98 and jones sleep walked to an easy victory despite being on the downside.
Two things about Dariusz:hammert: make me like him to make this match up competitive. Firstly: his Tszyu like accuracy & timing bodes well against speed And secondly and by most importantly, his preferred range is right at middle distance where Roy was least comfortable (watch the last 4 rounds vs Hopkins, 1st Griffith fight, passages of Harding fight) and he had the foot speed and the willingness to risk getting hit to maintain that distance almost constantly in his fights. Every fight I've seen him in has been the same: he presses and maintains that distance consistently, he doesn't tend to rush in and try to get/end up inside or clinching and he doesn't try to work in and out or get respite with range....he just presses middle range constantly and I think that's something Jones was particularly uncomfortable with & coupled with his accuracy, it makes the fight interesting. IMO this ends up being closer than most people would have expected. I'd pick a Jones split decision that warrants a rematch. The other possibility is that he presses Jones so hard and makes Jones so uncomfortable that he unleashes 'RJ' and we get a real FIGHT which ends by the mid rounds. Either way, this wouldn't look like the standard anemic tacit compromise type Jones defence, IMO.
judging by the polish quitters actions against roccaghiani, i doubt he had the fortitude necessary to press a fight against a prime jones jr and whether the incoming. nor did he have the defensive abilities that hopkins, harding or griffin had.
