How would the Chad Dawson of last night fare against prime versions of his trainer, Matthew Saad, and Dwight Qawi?
Perhaps not a mismatch, but I fail to see how Chad wins any of those matchups. A MISMATCH is Chad vs Mike Spinks, or Chad vs a prime Roy.
obviously the fight saturday is what all are basing these assumptions on. however, none of the 3 fight anything like pascal. maybe qawi or saad muhammads pressure would make dawson wilt eventually. he'd certainly be busting up saad muhammad all night long, and have a huge size/reach advantage on qawi. he and mustafa muhammad would be tactical
Like I said, even if Chad had smashed Pascal last night(which IMO he would in a rematch) I still wouldnt pick him over any of the three. His best shot would be vs his trainer, but Eddie MM at his best was an excellent techncian and a very good puncher. I think he would lay Chad out at some point. In fact if we're talking about the Eddie that beat Johnson than I KNOW he would lay Chad out at some point. And regarding Qawi... if the homeless man's Qawi known as Glenn Johnson could give Chad trouble with pressure, then I have little doubt that the Camden Buzzsaw runs Chad over at some point. Thats the worst matchup of the 3 for Chad. Qawi would beat the shit outta him after a few rounds. Chad outboxes Matt Saad for awhile, but late Saad's determination and power come through and he stops Chad. Do you agree that Chad vs a prime Jones is a mismatch?
Chad is better then Richard Hall, but I question if he could take the same amount of punishment Hall took. I really doubt Chad lasts the distance with a prime Roy. He could probably give the circa 02-03 Roy a decent fight, but still lose a clear decsion. The 97-00 Roy beats the living shit outta him though, and I dont think Chad would even be competitive.
I think Chad's being underrated on the back of this.... In a rematch I think he wins..... & comparisons with Richard Hall are fucking absurd.
I dont think Chad has the defense to avoid prime Roy's punches. And I KNOW Roy had the power to put Chad under. Chad is very good, but a prime Jones made very good fighters look like nothing, and he'd make Chad look like nothing.
No one compared him to Hall in terms of quality. And yes, he'd beat Pascal in a rematch. Pascal is shit IMO. But still, Pascal exposed Chad's vunernability to an opponent who has better speed then himself. Now in RJ, you have Pascal times 1,000. How well you think Chad is gonna fare? Trust me, its not a knock on Chad. He's a very good fighter, but he'd be WAAAY outta his element vs a prime Jones. If anything, I think many have forgotten how AMAZING Roy was.
We'll just have to disagree then. I think a prime Roy would fuck him up. And keep in mind, I STILL think that Chad on his game prob beats anyone from 168-175. His only two real threats would be Bute, and Ward.
Pascal is nowhere near as fast as Chad, IMO. Certainly not in combination. That wasn't what was exposed, in my book. I agree Roy would beat him, but I consider Chad as a better fighter than guys like Hill or Harding who really made Roy work. Probably better than Tarver, too, who woulda given Roy a tough night at any point (not beaten him). Chad would win some rounds and be competitive and pose some problems for Roy. Pascal was underrated going into this, the fight was an aberration on top of that and so it's one of those fights that people will draw more conclusions from than they should. People will look back on this fight in 5 years as a 'WTF? fight'. I think he perception of Chad going INTO this was more accurate than it is now. Not a Jones beater but a worthy opponent. Just, my opinion mind...
Hall definitely doesnt qualify for that distinction, nor do Telesco, Harmon and a host of other bums Roy sparred with on PPV Im not doubting he'd beat Dawson convincingly, but it would not look like those fights, Dawson is a clearly a much better fighter than those guys
Chad doesnt have the best chin in the world. Roy would hurt him, and its Chad's mentality to fight back when hurt, which not NOT serve him well in this case since it would only open him up for more counters. Guys who let thier hands go, and tried vs a prime Roy generally got stopped. Only the ones who fought to survive lasted. Chad would try his best, and in the end it would get him laid out.
Re: the Pascal fight, too. Dawson barely throws the left hand the whole way through. I'm talking 3, 4 times a round and even then, never with really threatening power. I think there's some credence to his complaints of shoulder problems because there were times when his reluctance to throw the left was inexplicable and was consistently giving Pascal a huge strategic edge. I hope there's a rematch. Gimme Dawson by statement-making stoppage. EDIT: scarp that. Just watching the fight now and in the 10th Lampley reports that it's the RIGHT shoulder. Fucking inexplicable. Just slap your own face unexplainable stupidity. Dawson must be brain damaged already. This is as bad as Malinaggi refusing to palm a single Khan jab. EDIT AGAIN: 11th round starts and Dawson comes out finally lets his left go and nearly stops Pascal in 20 fucking seconds flat. Finally lets a left uppercut go for the first time int he entire fight and nearly KOs Pascal with one shot. :bangh::bangh::bangh: What the fuck is wrong with this guy? Apologies for the week late round by round there, this is just some of the most bizarre stuff I've ever seen in a boxing ring.
