Fights That Have That "Feel-Good" Factor For YOU......

...what fights do you stick on, be it youtube, DVD, DVR etc....when you want some pick-me up entertainment?

They don't have to be great fights, or significant fights....but commentary, the event, the ending....anything that makes you feel good.


One of my favourites was Herol Graham being bombed out by Julian Jackson. The fight had happened before I started to follow boxing, but the commentary cracks me up every time. The sheer anguished "Oh Noooooooooooooooo" from the British commentator when Jackson lands that right-hand...priceless....:laugh11:.

I always liked Klitschko vs Danny Williams, not just the result as such but Roy Jones praising Klitschko was a real feather in the cap, picking out all the subtle stuff that Klitschko does that a lot of people miss out on. The fact tha Roy Jones was still an elite fight then makes it all the better.:egypt:....Klitschko winning the title at MSG in front of a sold out house with Roy Jones calling it, and wise-cracking with Jim and Larry.opcorn:

A really insignificant fight that I loved the commentary on involved a bummish heavyweight called Tyson Fury. Fury fought this absolute scrub, some Czech guy, on a card in Ireland. It was a 6 round fight and the commentary guys were blabbing about how Fury would do this guy in the first minute of the first round. Well 6 rounds later they were still blabbing about how Fury was going to do this guy and knock him out. Fury was standing there with a broken right hand clubbing this guy and trying to throw him down. Priceless junk.:laugh11::laugh11:

 

Locche-Fuji. Locche channeled some sort of holy boxing spirit from the ether, it's pornographic. Plus any sort of Joe Louis highlight reel type vid. I like watching the occasional Naz fight from time to time too since they remind me of dogging school watching his greatest hits vhs over and over.

Naz-Barrera is a favourite of mine....the sheer desperation you could feel coming off Naz, the ring-pillaring he got, the look on his face that he was about to burst into tears at the end....the look on his face at the press conference....a true "feel good" fight for me.

 

TBH, I watched that fight recently and it felt much closer than I remembered. I think I scored it 7-4-1. Definitely a fight where perception going in shaped perception going out. I'd love to have seen that fight a few years earlier, would have been most interesting. Or even a rematch where Naz spent more time training properly than mock sparring with strawweights and getting bi-daily haircuts. Cest le vie, he certainly got what he deserved.

Find it a bit strange that so many people take more cheer in watching somebody take a beating than in great performances.....

 

That's why we have a "Feel Good Factor" thread--- to recognize the phenomenon of fights that make you feel good for reasons that go beyond performances, talent, result, significance etc.

I would say that YB Campas beating of the grim rapist Ayala is a feel good classic, for sure, unless you are Barristan and rape is your kind of thang.

The fight that fits this the most for me is Lennox vs. Razor Ruddock. Short, sharp, and to the point. Also love Lennox vs. Golota, and Lennox-Rahman 2 (BOOM!)

A commentary I always liked with the action was Hamed vs. Kelley

One of my favorite fights that is relatively underrated is Angel Manfredy vs. Arturo Gatti. The commentary seems to flow perfectly with the momentum shifts and the rhythm of the exchanges. Good stuff.

 

Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Floyd Mayweather Sr. I could watch the last couple of rounds all day. Ray wasn't one to coast. He was a great example of someone who wants to get the person out of there. He beat the piss out of Floyd Sr and is probably responsible for some of Floyd's advice when he corners people: "BBRRRRDDDDDDUPPPPPPP".

Ray could turn it up like nobody I've ever seen. He also just had great technique. The way he dug that left hook into the side of Floyd's face, just past the guard, was awesome considering it was the 10th round. Then Ray decided it was time to close the show, did a shuffle, and then POUNDED Floyd with a shoeshine combination that likely added considerably to Floyd's motor skill decline.

But this is the greatest of all feel-good corner-related matters, the strange case of William Joppys corner for the Trinidad fight.:Thumbs:

Mother of God.

A small fat black guy with a headband, the smallest piece of sponge known to man, a toothpick, no stool, and an indecipherable {thankfully so} stream of "advice" to a mortally wounded fighter. Sweet Jesus...the fight was memorable just for that. Whatever chance Joppy had evaporated periodically every-time he returned to his corner.

The longer he spent away from his corner...the better his chances were.ld:

Trainer at the end of round 2: "You gotta get tuff now"

Perhaps the funniest post I've read on these boards in 2010!

 

Either Starling-Honeyghan or McCallum-Curry usually do the trick for me.

If things are really tough then I might go to Holyfield-Dokes or Pazienza-Haugen 1 or Foreman-Moorer but only in really bad times.

 

Haven't watched this one in a while, but the Pernell Whitaker-Wilfredo Rivera/Ike Quartey-Vince Phillips double-header outdoors down in St Maarten.

The palm trees in the background are a nice touch...like out of a Corona commercial.

 

Weren't they there for the Ike Quartey vs Vince Phillips fight? Surreal. It looked like a ring had been knocked up in the middle of an oasis.

Ike Quartey is a great example at welter. Every punch looked like it was designed to hurt the other guy.

Simon Brown is another one. He said it himself, "I don't put my jab out there like a range-finder; I put it out there to hurt you!"

 

Oleg Maskaev-Hasim Rahman/Derrick Jefferson-Maurice Harris...another that I haven't seen in a while, but that was one of the most exciting nights of heavyweight boxing I can remember on the network.

Riddick Bowe-Andrew Golota I and II...had them both on the same tape, and watched them one quite a bit...and throw in the Mercer-Witherspoon undercard fight.

The Chavez-Randall II card...it get mentions a lot, and rightfully so...if I had to pick a primary "feel good" moment of the night I guess it would be Terry Norris' performance.

 

Jones/Pazienza, one of two fights where I rooted for Roy (Ruiz being the other) ... watching that dumb guido getting bounced up and down off the canvas like a yo-yo was wonderful

My "Dumb Guido Bounce" will always be Bika vs Manfredo. I felt so good watching that, with all the home boys cheering, and Manfredo acting like he scored a knockdown...to see him being clubbed like a fur seal was immaculate. He got altogether more clubbed than Pete Tong.:Chainsaw:

it was one of the reasons why, despite my admiration of his courage and the undeniable drama of his fights, I could never fully get behind Gatti... it was just to easy to see him in a bar, wearing a tight t-shirt with a gold chain and getting bottle service

That was the same trainer who told Rahman to throw his arms up everytime Lewis gets aggressive...the very pose that allowed Lewis to land the looping right-hand that knocked him out.

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but right behind Lennox v Razor for me now as i just remembered... Shane Mosley vs. Margarito. I think i might watch that again tonight actually
