I am dying to hear from all the diehard boxing fans that always give MMA fighters shit because they 'quit' or tap out. How many times have I heard about how boxers can't quit or they will lose respect. It's just simply not accepted among real combat athletes.. LOL. Saturday night we saw James Toney waving his arm like the old lady in the Life Alert commercial that had fallen and couldn't get up. He was begging for rescue before his lights went out. Pun absolutely intended. And remember, this is a James Toney with more than 70 pro boxing bouts and a guy that has never really even been seriously staggered in a boxing ring. Yet in less than 3 minutes in the octagon with a 47-year old MMA fighter, Toney quits.. The Toney-Couture fight doesn't settle anything in the whole Boxing versus MMA bullshit debate. In my opinion, the fight is as meaningless as Kimbo-Mercer. But hopefully it will quell the garbage being spewed by morons about how pathetic it is for MMA fighters to quit.
It's not only boxers that say it, I've heard it spoken from all different people from football players to keyboard warriors. The bottom line is that it is an ignorant statement by someone who has never been in that position.
yup. Choke someone and as they feel they are blacking out, they will either tap or go to sleep. Most people tap. Either way you are going to lose, but if you tap, you lose less brain cells
Curious if you've ever been choked to the point that your head starts to feel numb and your vision starts closing in like a tunnel? At that point it is just a second, two tops, before you're asleep. If you've been there once, you tap quick as a mother fucker the next time around because you know there's no time to spare. James isn't a pussy for tapping. It's far better than the alternative. That being said, after ALL the shit he talked, I think he should have gone to sleep. It would have been far more respectable.
Yeah, it was unfair of Dana to match him with someone so young. Certainly the UFC has an over 50 group.
He doesnt know to go to sleep. He has never been put in that position before. He was probably scared. That being said, i still think he blacked out a little.
Anyone who says it's cowardly to quit 2 seconds before you pass out unconscious from asphyxiation is a moron. I was actually impressed that Toney hung on so long, he gave it his best down there and could easily have quit when Couture got that first choke in. Couture certainly fought smart from a 'win the fight perspective', even down to the choice of take down. Next to impossible to counter a single leg take down with punches. Pretty fucking boring though. A rematch in a boxing ring would be most satisfying....
OK. I guess I have to go there. Boxing fans that disregard MMA typically say that quitting is part of the culture of MMA, and they use it to discredit the sport compared to boxing. Because in boxing quitters are labeled for life. They entirely ignore the idea that the alternative to quitting in MMA often means a snapped limb or going to sleep. So, watching Toney tap quickly with his arm flailing hammers home the point. Toney would never quit or be stopped in a boxing ring. But in the octagon it happened in under 3 minutes.
And that's the point most people miss. Neither Randy Couture, the UFC, or Dana White was calling out James Toney or boxing. It was James Toney that didn't respect the sport or the athletes in MMA and made an absolute fool of himself, and to some degree, boxing. The first time I hear GSP or Lesnar or Couture or Rua saying they could kill a boxer in their respective weight class, then I will say the same thing about them, they're full of shit. However, to date, I can't remember that happening.
bullshit. toney looked fucking horrible in his last fight where he was taking flush punches from a fat midwestern bum in basketball shorts. if he fought a live body who could hit he was going to get stopped sooner rather than later.
toney couldnt get any paydays in boxing so he effectively talked himself into one, a big one. and he hardly took any punishment at all. who's the fool?
I didn't say Toney looked good in a boxing ring. I said he's been close to being stopped. Are you going to disagree with MY point? Doubtful.
Spin it however you want but Toney is the only one that LOOKED like a fool. The UFC made money. The fans paid to see Toney get his mouth shut and they got what they paid for. Toney got paid to look like a douche. If he's OK with that, so be it. But he is the only one that couldn't show his face afterwards. Period.
i think the point youre attempting to make is misleading. for reasons illustrated above. well toney took hardly any punishment and made at least three quarters of a million dollars. if you think he's not ok with that, i question your intelligence. are you suggesting you wouldnt mind rolling around on the canvas with a 47 year old guy, taking a few punches with no leverage on them in exchange for 750K? toney stole money, and the ufc roster should be upset that they get paid peanuts to go to war while a washed up boxer came in and made more than 95% of them will see in a lifetime with UFC.
If the UFC fighters were making peanuts then maybe they would. But toney made those fighters money. The more people buy the more they make.
Neil really hasn't made a single point. Does getting paid really make it acceptable to get destroyed in the fight? Do you honestly think James Toney isn't embarrassed? The dude couldn't even show his face at the post fight press conference. That being said, Dana White and Randy Couture certainly were there. They weren't embarrassed. Boxing fans want to try and diminish the shameful effort by Toney by talking about how much he got paid. It doesn't matter. He looked like an utter fool. And if you don't think the one-side loss damages boxing's image, you're crazy. To the casual fan, the guy who isn't a diehard one way or the other, this fight swayed his opinion. It shouldn't have, but it probably did.
you guys paid who bought/supported that rubbish paid toney's 6 figure salary for a complete non effort. He came in the ring 20 pounds heavier than he did for his last tune up, which was versus a complete bum. its pretty clear he came in for a cheque. mission accomplished. toney had no reason to be at the press conference. it would have been the professional thing to do, but its obvious this was a one-off fight for him in mixed martial arts and that he had no reason to act professionally to insure he remains in good standing with the ufc. you do realize that neither hbo nor showtime wouldnt put toney on their networks?? and for him to make that type of loot he wouldve had to fight 15 times on espn2 or fox sports. if a casual fan was swayed by that farce then it is best they become die hard mma fans, because the ignorant tend to flock toward that faction anyhow in these parts.
ufc fighters arent making peanuts now? what percentage of UFC guys make 750,000 in their lifetime? toney stole money, and you are telling me that guys who work hard day in an day out, fight hard, and then get compensated with a tiny percentage of the gross are cool with that? if that were the case all those guys shouldve been cheering for toney to win so the gravy grain can continue right?
Who knows how much they make. who knows how much Toney made. I heard that his deal of making 750k is for a three fight deal. He had to win his fight in order to fight again. We dont know how much he got for his one fight. You arent really sure what you are talking about. the UFC made WAAAY more money off of James Toney than the other way around. Sorry
Or those actually looking for a growing sport that is absolutely kicking boxing's ass in every aspect in the US.
Toney can't even get on ESPN as a boxer these days. Yet he made a fool out of how ever many people bought that cage fighting farce. He was the main draw of one of the biggest cage fighting cards of the year. ::
Are you serious? Toney looked like Toney. He got paid big $$$ to roll on the ground for 3 minutes. Couldnt show he face? Give me a break, he was probably too busy rolling in the easy money he just made.
