mayweather would be a huge draw in MMA ONCE. an thats it. Once people see how easily he gets beaten, they wont order him again

Boxers have the same chance as anybody else if they cross train properly.

I doubt it. the million buys in MMA would all tune in to see Lesner get properly beat once too.

Toney was Being EASILY BEATEN in Boxing Too, Dude...Your 1st Sentence INSINUATES Superiority to MMA, Whether U ACKNOWLEDGE it or Not...

DESPITE the Savvy Marketing of UFC, James Toney WAS NOT a Relevant OR "Elite" Level Boxer & he HASN'T Been for Nearly a DECADE...& if Toney had SOMEHOW Beaten Couture, we'd have Heard SIMILAR Shit Slanted the OPPOSITE Direction...To Date, NO MMA Guys Wanna Discuss Mercer vs. Sylvia for Some Reason, so SPARE REED your Insinuations, Dude...Sylvia was CLOSER to his Elite Level Self than Toney was, in their Respective MMA Fights....

REED's BIGGEST Beef w/YOU (AND Godfather) is that Ya'll Soooo READILY TURN your Fucking Backs on a Sport U SUPPOSEDLY "Loved" @ 1 Time....That's Some TURNCOAT, FAIRWEATHER BULLSHIT, No Matter HOW U Wanna Spin it...

& w/All Due Respect, FUCK YA'LL for Shitting on Boxing, just to Make MMA Look Better...It's 1 Thing when TFGAY's Lame Ass Does it, but it's Another when Guys PLAY the Boxing Card, KNOWING they've Already WIPED their Asses w/It....

Great post REED. There is some serious fairweather bullshit on this site.

I mean, you have guys here who didn't know James Toney was a shot boxer. Leading up to the fight, I actually had to explain it to these guys.

Well, I can't speak for Godfather and TFK but I know the motivation behind my post. It is 100% a fun retaliation for the MMA 'Culture of quitting" bull shit that was being thrown around.

And you have to admit, getting a veteran boxer to tap after 70+ fights in the boxing ring with never even being close to a stoppage should shut those guys up about MMA fighters quitting.

Again, I don't need to prove I love boxing. At the end of the day I know which sport I grew up watching and completely appreciating. At the end of the day I know the history of the sport and the technical brilliance demonstrated by it's best practicioners. At the end of the day I know the sport that my brothers and father spent the most time debating, watching and literally coming to blows about.

By the same token I also know enough about boxing to know that the participants aren't born with stronger chins, more toughness, more punching power or an inherently higher level of skill than MMA fighters. And that's the point so many on here can't accept.

You don't understand the difference between tapping from submissions and falling down from strikes.

Getting subbed doesn't make you a quitter, but falling down from strikes when the going gets a little tough is quitting/giving up.

Could you just tell me again how MMA fighter don't have chins as good as boxers? That was cool.

I love MMA and I love Boxing. I just don't get it. I don't even see how someone compares the two. I don't compare football and soccer. Or Baseball to Cricket. Just never makes sense to me.

Who in here was claiming Toney wasn't shot? That's crazy talk.

The result of this fight or the result of Sylvia vs Mercer doesn't mean shit. Let's not pretend this means anything as far as boxing vs MMA goes. It's a lame comparison anyway.

I agree with Jarhead's post above, they are different sports and cannot be compared.

Actually, I think a good comparison would be sprinter/decathlete. Each almost always will win in their own arenas.

But you can compare how each sport is run. Thats what i do.

  18. winner by choke

obviously due to the the nature of the sport, boxers in general are "tougher" than mma fighters.

either way, anyone getting choked will tap out period. unless they have been choked out 100s of times and dont care. its preservation...instinct.

  19. Bob N Weave

    Bob N Weave Guest

This makes no sense. It all comes down to the individual. Plenty of tough fighters and weaker fighters in both sports.

    winner by choke Undisputed Champion

in general?? wrestling/grappling require little to no real toughness (grappling more so than wrestling) a high majority of mma practitioners are grapplers first and foremost.

boxing is hit and get hit for twice the amount of time, with no takedowns or get out of jail free anythings (sans getting yourself dqed) until somebody is toast.

far more brutal, which is why i never understood the whole "human cockfighting" angle.

  21. Bob N Weave

    Bob N Weave Guest

no "get out of jail anythings?" How about a 10 count? Clinching? C'mon man.

  22. winner by choke

    winner by choke Undisputed Champion

8 and 10 counts prolong the beating. clinching is difficult to do when stunned and a 2-3 second break at best. in a fight if you get nailed you can hold on for as long as you can.

boxing is far tougher and worse. several times i stepped on the mat overmatched (the late carlson gracie, a 220 LBS cal state bakersfield wrestler with a purple belt in bjj, and several bjj brown and black belts.) never did i feel in danger.

i sparred muay thai at city boxing with lloyd irvin in a very professional but safe environment.

match this with boxing which is far more old school and brutal, when you are in with a superior you have to count your blessings. boxing is far more limited making it far more dangerous. if youre overmatched it gets ugly.

in a fight i can take down someone who rocks me, switch my hips/close up my guard to avoid gnp, hold someone against the wall/fence/ropes until i recover if im stunned.

in boxing you get nailed good fucking luck.

imo that is why it has bred tougher athletes, because it takes far more natural killer to make it in the ring than the cage.

  23. royyjonesjrp4pno1

    royyjonesjrp4pno1 "Twinkle Toes" McJack

Compare the amount of serious injuries in both. High school football is more dangerous than MMA.

  24. Trplsec

    Trplsec Sleeps in a Cage

What do you mean good luck? You get nailed in boxing you can simply take a knee. And guess what, the ref stops your opponent from hitting for 8 or 9 seconds. Maybe more as we has all seen before.

And you make it seem like any stunned MMA fighter can just DECIDE to take his opponent down at will. That's bull shit.

We don't need to speculate. Just last night in Bellator Joe Warren was absolutely beaten to a pulp while standing in the first round. Being so badly out classed and beaten, he tried DESPARATELY to get the fight to the ground. And Warren is one of the better Greco-Roman wrestlers to jump in an MMA cage. Guess what? He got battered even worse trying to get a take down.

I understand the need to over simplify things in order to prove your point about boxers being "tougher" but that's just nonsense. Some boxers are tougher. Some aren't. It's the individual, not the sport.

  28. Trplsec

I don't care. It is still over simplifying things to say an MMA fighter can just automatically get a take down if he's stunned.

I don't care if Fedor said it, he'd be wrong as well.
