Everyone was afraid of him because people said he had down syndrome which we thought meant that he was incapable of feeling pain. In the fourth grade, all genetic disorders automatically equated to having a super power. Later we found our that he didn't have down syndrome, his father used to beat him every Saturday night. In the end, it looks like we all had the last laugh. Bill Emes and Michael Marley from BoxingScene.com recently talked to Manny Pacquiao and asked if he would consider getting into MMA. His response may have you reconsidering your stance in this silly MMA vs boxing nonsense. During a recent press conference, BoxingScene.com's Bill Emes and Michael Marley cornered Manny Pacquiao on the subject of Mixed Martial Arts. Pacquiao said he watched MMA and UFC, but said it was "too brutal" when asked for his thoughts on the sport. When asked if he would ever consider trying his hand at Mixed Martial Arts, Pacquiao replied to BoxingScene - "I want to, but they [promoters and management] don't want me to fight." Yep.If you don't have any grappling experience your screwed. The only way a boxer can be sucessfull in MMA is to do it full time.
Pac has a kickboxing background. Plus his style is way better suited for MMA than a defensive guy like Toney.
He's not going to just stand there and let someone shoot on him like Toney did. I knew what was going to happen in the Toney fight and I don't feel like Pac would be as helpless.
I think Pac would at least take it seriously and try to learn the ground game. If he does, he'll be a force. Don't ge me wrong, he'd have a couple of submission losses on his record but he would win more than he would lose imo, even vs top guy's ( as long as he doesn't rush it ). Pac's a freak of nature with boundless energy, I think he would be hard to control
Pac's shear speed obviously gives him a better chance than Toney, but who cares? Two different sports. Are Anderson Silva & GSP constantly getting asked if they wanna try boxing?
Kickboxers or boxers with takedown defense can have GREAT success in MMA. Crocop may not be that good now, but from 2002-2006, he ran roughshod over the Pride Heavyweight division. Only Big Nog, Randleman, and Fedor got him in that time period. His sprawl kept him from most submission attempts and his striking was topnotch.
Pretty much the only way for a boxer like Pacquiao to succesfully get into mma is to acknowledge how different the sports are and concede that it will take a long time to reach the top level of the sport. In other words, the exacty opposite approach that Toney took. You should lower expectations to the point of almost nothing. The reasons you should lower expectations to the point of almost nothing is because your chances for great success are minimal no matter how good you are at boxing.
That's hitting the nail on the head. And I will take it one step further. If I am a world famous boxer like Manny, I don't want my first MMA experience to be in the UFC against a Hall of Famer. I would admit to myself and the public that it's a learning process. I would fight in smaller promotions to test the water and determine where I stand. If he progresses and his speed, power and shear athletic ability begin to translate into solid MMA skills, then you push it to the next level. That way if the transition doesn't pan out, he doesn't look like a fool but rather just a guy that took a chance at something different. Just my opinion.
