Some tough guy he is! :atu: How's he be talking all this smack about cage boys being bitches and talking sh*t about how tough he is and how he's never quit? He got choked the f*ck out by a 47 year old man in less than 4 minutes! He quit!
Yeah but it's all about the rep. When you been fighting all your life and much of your rep is about how you never quit and never got stopped and then you quit against a 47 year old has-been, that kinda damages the rep.
A choke isn't like quitting in a boxing ring. To your body's systems thats a near death experience and your bodies gonna do whatever it can to claw its way out of it. If Toney was criticising guys in that scenario he's wiser now. I was actually impressed with how calmly Toney got out of the first choke Couture put on him. Toney's a tough guy, make no mistake.
Couture's one of the worst at applying chokes and I think he was actually taking it easy on Toney. Trying out some new move he learned.
You have to keep in mind that Toney is straight, and he probably didn't appreciate being grinded by another man like that.
Toney didn't quit. And it took a lot of balls for him to get in there. What was funny was after the fight when he's waving to the crowd, like he thinks he's got 20,000 new fans or something.
I wouldn't say it took a lot of balls. Toney is a professional fighter so fighting is his thing. This was just a different form of fighting so not that big a deal. Plus he's used to working 36 minutes for is money. Here he got paid for a couple of minutes of work. It wasn't about balls. It was about taking a wise financial opportunity.
although this fight obviously doesen't prove anything in the mma vs. boxing debate, i am glad toney got put in his place.
What do you mean? We saw that boxers can't defend takedowns nor get up off their backs. Boxers were exposed to a large degree.
i'm sure toney would knock couture out in under 30 seconds in a boxing fight. I'd love to see randy try his "dirty boxing" against toney.

seriously. wtf? i don't see any MMA fighters switching to boxing and having any success at all, whatsoever. the fact is, the rules in MMA are different than the rules in boxing. and the fact an MMA fighter, playing by his rules, can beat a boxer, doesn't prove shit. at all. it's like saying baseball players are tougher than basketball players because Jordan couldn't cut it in the MLB.
in defense of the MMA supporters (I can scarcely believe I am saying this) , MMA is a lot closer to a no-rules real life fighting situation than a boxing match is
I agree. But you also don't have MMA fighters claiming they could step in a boxing ring and KILL James Toney. That, however, is exactly what James Toney said about MMA and Randy Couture. Couture, after destroying Toney, was his typical classy self and said he knows Toney would knock him out in the first round in a boxing ring. Even Anderson Silva, who stated he wanted to box with Roy Jones, did it with respect. I read a quote the other day where Silva said "I'd like to fight Roy Jones in a boxing match to see where my boxing skills are." And therein lies the issue. Don't blame MMA for beating Toney. Blame Toney for disrespecting MMA and then looking like a fool.
Right, but in a real life fight, if Couture does not know who Toney is (or his background as a pro boxer), does he really try to take him to the ground or does he try to man up and fight it out with him. I say the latter which leads to him getting knocked out in the street.
Let me add, however, that I think Toney would only win the first street fight and that Couture would probably choke him out in each subsequent one (if there were any) with the added benefit of knowing he can't match him standing.
Apparently Vitor Belfort has asked Dana White for permission to have a boxing match against James Toney and Toney has agreed to it in principle. Some are doubtful Dana will agree though since he claimed he had no more interest in making MMA vs Boxing matches in the future. http://www.fighthype.com/pages/content8353.html
Dana won't agree to it. It's a circus act. Toney should stick to boxing and Vitor should stick to mma.
I would contend that. MMA is closer to the type of fights you'd get on a school playground but just as far removed from 'reality'. And a boxers skill set are more applicable to the real world than a grapplers for mine.
Rolling around on the ground is an insane first resort in 95% of 'real' fight situations. Just insane.
