If we matchup the Kalambay of the first McCallum fight vs the Toney of the first McCallum fight, then we have a helluva chessmatch! It'd be close either way, but I think that version of JT who fought with fire could pull out a tough, close decision of Kalambay. But I dont have much issue w/anybody picking Kalambay. He was a silky smooth, beautiful techncian.
That statement leads me to believe you dont know much about Kalambay. Its not an easy fight for JT by any means.
I know enough. I'm not saying that Toney woudl pitch a shut out...but I'm saying that there's very little chance that Toney would lose
yes, considering how convincingly he always beat guys who didnt come right at him hate to break it to you, Toney had limitations... every guy that ever wasnt up in his face gave him fits Sumbu Kalambay was more accomplished than Reggie Johnson
Well, in Toney's defense... Kalambay wasnt on the level of Nunn, and certainly not Jones. And even Nunn got broken down eventually. Toney is kinda UNDERRATED when it comes to handling boxers. I mean Christ, yall make it seem as if he was as inept as Trinidad or something.
but he got the dog shit beaten out of him for the vast majority of the Nunn fight, and then Nunn got overly brave and confident and started getting hit Kalambay, a trick, cautious fighter, would not make that mistake and Jones won every second of his fight against Toney, if Kalambay was 1/16 that good he'd still win Reggie Johnson more or less drew with Toney, Kalambay is better than Johnson was
Nunn got overly brave my ass! Toney broke him down. And prime Roy was SEVERAL levels above every middle of that generation, so its kinda not fair to Kalambay. I agree Kalambay was better then Reggie, but not by awhole helluva lot. Johnson was excellent fighter too, and pretty underrated nowadays. Kalambay could possibly win, but it wouldnt be an easy fight for EITHER man. I WILL say for Kalambay that his first fight with McCallum is possibly the best exhibition of boxing Ive ever seen. I dunno which clinic I love to watch more.. that or Benitez-Duran. Both are beautiful displays of the sweet science.
