chavez, tyson and tszyu among others. but my question is

HOW THE FUCK CAN CARLOS HERNANDEZ's NAME BE ON THE BALLOT?

i realize his nickname is "famous" but him being on the ballot makes a mockery of the entire process.

Chavez and Tyson certainly are first ballot.

Not so sure about most others.

How many chances do boxers have to be nominated? A few of those guys are pretty ancient.

I believe they stay on the ballot if they get a certain percentage of votes.

I know of some guys who will vote for their favorite old-timers over a 1st ballot guy they know will get in anyways, just to keep them on the ballot for next year.

Nope, they just linger on and on. It's not like baseball, where you need x percentage of votes or x amount of years to get voted in.

For example, "that" Carlos Hernandez has been on the ballot for as long as I've been a voting member of the BWAA (I joined in 2002) and was probably on longer than that.

Interesting. I know a lot of guys have their favorites they'll vote for over and over.

I guess they are a bit haphazard about which guys get on the ballot and which guys don't sometimes.

Sounds a lot like the Old-Timers committee in baseball. Maybe buddies pushing buddies up the list and a few guys getting left behind because they didn't know the right people.............or the right people didn't know them.

With guys like Barry McGuigan and Edwin Rosario on the members list, they should rename it to "The Boxing Hall of Pretty Good".

Well, it is called the "Hall of Fame", not the "Hall of Greatest".

I long ago stopped being bothered by who got in a HOF, regardless of the sport.

It's a way for old-timers to be remembered. If some borderline guys get in there, great. It's not like the All-Timers like Chavez and Tyson are starving for attention.

Who the hell am I to tell them or their family they aren't worthy?

Not that I'd vote them in, but I'm kind of surprised that the names of Iran Barkley or Julian Jackson have yet to grace the ballot sheet.

I never really bought into the Hall of Fame v. Hall of Great argument. Every sport calls it a Hall of Fame, but the inductions of participants are still heavily (if not entirely) based on what they accomplished on the field/court/ice. Boxing is just the only sport with no standards when it comes to the voting process.

Yep, and the biggest problem is that system seems irreversible.

"If so and so is in the hall of fame than this guy should be too"

It's only get even more watered down than it is already.

    Chavez & Tyson are locks.

Curry shoulda gotten in years ago. Its a crime that Cuevas, McGugian, and Palomino are in there, but not Donald Curry.

    agREED...

REED is Just Theorizing, but Part of the Problem Could B that Curry is VERY HARD to Locate....He's Basically a NOMAD...Last REED Knew, he was Shacking Up @ Some Cheap, Sleazy Motel in Dallas....Every Now & Then, he'll Show Up @ a Fight Card, but Dude DIDN'T Have a Phone or a Reliable Address, Last time REED Saw him....

Which is SAD, Because his HOF Induction is Loooooooooooooooooong Overdue....

Well, one step in the right direction was when they lowered the number of yearly entrants from four to three.

The only flaw in that is when you have a year in which three modern fighters are locks, which means (at least) one more year for some of the old timers who should've been voted in long before the Barry McGuigans of the world.

This year, Tyson and Chavez are locks. That leaves one votes and the fact that too many new schoolers believe Tszyu is first ballot HOF material tells me all you need to know about who will and won't get in this year.

Tszyu has a single excellent win--judah. He was stopped twice. He has a handful of good wins like Mitchell, Mago, Urkal, Hurtado, and Tackie. He never found great popularity outside of boxing boards, Russia, and Oz. While I can appreciate the idea that HOF really equals hall of great, i don't really agree, at least not all the time. No great fights despite having dlh, prime chavez, whitaker..all within striking distance. Shameful ducking of Vince Phillips after their first fight.

Hamed, otoh, was as famous as you can get. No shit losses. No excellent wins, but at least 8 good wins--Medina, Johnson, Kelley, Vazquez (maybe an excellent win), McCullough, Ingle, Soto, and Bungu. Hurt a lot by not coming back from his lone loss other than a cameo.
