You have to love it. Most of the scribes were delighted when this was signed. Briggs was the sort of steroid-marinated dude with the power and the balls. Magical thinking had it that he could bash Vitali to the body, and, err, reach in with, well, reach in with something big, and the big stiff would unravel.

Then when its over, and JJ Briggs is in hospital, carry on with the old pathology about how this proves everyone correct and the division is a travesty laden disgrace, and that they were right all along.

No lose situation. If he wins, it's great. If he loses, fuck it, get some mileage out of the defeat by claiming it reinforces the original belief.

In the meantime, how is Dirrell doing??

Well good thing this is the internet. You can actually back up what you're saying. Can I see some links from scribes who were making a case for Briggs?

 

Well I posted before the fight calling Briggs generally lazy and undisciplined, so I felt compelled to post something today having watched the fight. He is still lazy and undisciplined, but he is one tough S.O.B. so I have to give him credit for showing NOT an intense will to win, but at least an intense will to not go down in a heap of goo. Briggs has a lot of heart, and clearly some pride, and he deserves to be given props for not giving up when he could have many, many times while taking a hellacious beating. Oh and no clinching. That was refreshing.

I wanted to add also that Vitali looks truly spoiled by fighting largely inferior boxers. He has been fighting second-tier, washed up, slow, semi-skilled heavies for most of his career, and he is sloppy. Of course, against the likes of Briggs, he can afford to be. Against an opponent who was more evenly matched in size and skill, he would have to tighten up quite a bit. Lots of hands down, comes in open for counters, very predictable. Briggs caught him a few times just winging shots. Also I noticed Vitali cocks that right elbow way up high, straight back, every time right before he throws that down-angled straight right hand that hit Briggs ten million times. He is SO open to counters SO frequently, it is almost strange.

Unfortunately, there is apparently no one at heavy who is capable of taking advantage of any of these flaws. They are all either scared, stupid, or just plain bad. I want to make clear that this is not necessarily a slight to Vitali - he has shown tremendous skill throughout his career and I wouldn't be surprised if he raised his performance to the level of a better opponent, should one come along. It may just be a case of "fighting down to the level" of the guy across from him.

I really dislike every generation revering the last one and talking about how if "so-and-so" was around today he would KO every heavy out there, etc., etc. But watching Vitali really started to convince me that he may well have been a 32-6-1 type fighter in another era. Good enough to fight at the elite level, but not dominant. All of this is of course speculation, and probably unfair to Vitali who keeps winning. But as always, when I watch Vitali fight I see a very good, AND very entertaining, but very beatable fighter.

 

Yeah I know. Thankfully we have Andre Ward top of the Super 6 with 6 points from 2 decision wins, so we don't have to bother with the Heavyweights any more.

Imagine if we didn't have Dirrell and his 3 American Judges up there in Michigan, feigning injury and getting people DQ'd? We might actually be left with guys like the Klitschko's.

And imagine if the Manny Pac vs Floyd fight never happened, and we ended up with Sugar Shane hefting urine in a jar like he was Ron "4th of July" Kovac? Shit would be fucked up, right? Right?
