Obviously there's more to a fighter than Speed, power and chin...but these are the three attributes that tend to stand out the most when assessing fighters for the first time and also the attributes that you would think...when exist in combination...would make the said fighter virtually invincible. It's very rare to see all three together in a fighter...and whenever they are..the fighter tends to "make some noise" in his division.

    Examples:

    Sugar Ray Robinson
    Mike Tyson
Manny Pacquiao (arguably an OUTSTANDING chin..evidenced in the Cotto, Morales, Marquez and DLH fights)

Can you think of any more?

Don't expect anyone will match those 3.

If Pacquiao qualifies, then so does ODH. As does Duran, SRL, and JMM.

    How so?

SRL did not have ATG power. JMM..neither power, speed or chin. Duran wasn't known for his speed.

ODH...you may have a point though...

:tick: Also Ali didn't have the power. Foreman didn't have the speed. And Trevor Berbick didn't really have any of the above but otherwise he qualifies

I'm talking about guys that had all three attributes. Anyone can bring many names that had at least two. That's not the point of the thread.

Naseem Hamed is a consideration. Perhaps his chin can be called into question considering he'd been dropped a few times...but in his prime: tremendous speed and power and dependable whiskers on the few occasions it was tested.

Was Duran really known for his SPEED? Really? I'm not suggesting that he was slow, per se, but did he really have ATG speed?

I would argue that Leonard's power was closer to being ATG than Tyson's chin. The same for Duran. His handspeed was as close to ATG as Tyson's chin.

When you think of the best chins in the history of HW boxing does Mike Tyson really come to mind? It doesn't for me. He was knocked out by guys not known for their punching power. And you can argue fatigue or accumulation of punches but he still got hit on the chin and went down.

I'm assuming that the only Tyson you are aware of is the late thirties version of the late 90s.

Tyson's chin was concrete. No question. Even when he was older and fought Lennox Lewis...he took every punch that Lewis threw at him..and was only KO'd because he elected to stay down after the convenience ref ignoring his subtle compant that Lewis fouled him (held him down or whatever). Tyson took some flush shots from Ruddock, Bruno etc.

Eventually....much latter in his career when he was merely a shell...he got KOd by Williams and some tall white dude (whose name escapes me) but to say he didn't have an ATG chin in his prime is ASININE. why do you think commentators used to go on about his 19" neck..like some sort of natural shock absorber...if they didn't note that his chin was solid.

What Tyson lacked wasn't chin...it was heart.

I disagree. SRL was a solid puncher but not even close of being a great one. Also Duran was not slow but by no means had great speed either. Tyson's chin is at least borderline great. Only guys to knock him down were Douglas and Lewis (who both beat him mercilessly for several rounds), Holyfield (balance shot) and Williams (Tyson was shot and quit). Considering his style and the punches he took through the years, I'd say his chin was great

OK, my bad. I didn't realize Tyson's prime ended at the tender age of 24 when Douglas knocked him out.

Personally I 100% believe Tyson avoided shots with a great defense and prior to Douglas was never really tested because he either got guys out quickly or they were so afraid that they never took chances.

And let's be brutally honest, it wasn't a lack of heart that had Tyson grasping for his missing mouthpiece against Douglas, it was a punch that had him on queer street.

Furthermore, if you don't think Holyfield hurt Tyson with punches to the chin in their first fight, you might want to go back and rewatch it.

I'll give Tyson's chin credit for standing up to a big shot late in the Tucker fight and a few shots in both Rudduck fights as both guys were good punchers and honestly never more than briefly stunned Mike. But beyond that, and I've watched every second of every Tyson fight since Jesse Ferguson, his chin was rarely tested before the "end of his prime" at 24. LOL.

All that being said, Tyson's chin doesn't deserve mention among the likes of Ali, Chuvalo or Cobb at HW. He had a very good chin, but calling it an all time great chin is a bit much in my opinion.

In terms absorbing single shots Tyson's chin was just about as good as they came. the problem was with his style, once he started to unravel and get ragged in fights he would be open to BOMBS. Guys like Oliver McCall kept their chin down throughout and didn't really extend themselves like Mike did. Tyson left himself more vulnerable by leaping etc, which required him to have his wits & timing about him not to get tattooted.

I think it's fair to call Tyson's chin 'outstanding'. There were better chins, just like there were harder punches but he took some monsterous shots in his career and ate them up. But he was vulnerable to being picked apart and taken apart with extended beatings.

    Ya dig?

Tyson had an excellent chin IMHO. Undoubtedly so.

    Ha-fucking-med? Hamed? Really?

Personally I think his power was overrated but I'll give you the alltime great power. But then how the fuck can you nitpick SRL's power and Tyson's chin but then give Hamed a pass on his chin? Plus Hamed was always called an alltime fast puncher but I'm still waiting for somebody to prove that to me.

In fact I offer a challenge to anyone who can pull up a clip of Hamed on Youtube that shows him using impressive handspeed. None of you will be able to though, because no clip exists. You know why? Because Hamed didn't even have very good handspeed much less ATG. From what I saw his handspeed was pretty fucking average.

Walking the dog today (bearded collie, decent sized dog) and he legit got stalked and attacked by a huge black cat. Neither me or the dog had a clue what the chat was. We were both all like 'hoi, Jim, whats the script here?' and the cat was all like 'Im gonny eat ye, big yin'. I was finally like 'fuck this aggro, Im for the off', pulled the dog away. The dog looked at me as if to say 'wtf was that about, chief?' and I just shrugged since I didn't know.

Then we went home and eat pork with apple & onion sauce and watched King of Queens.

    The End.

    Why thank you.

I wanted to say Terry Norris, but some of these no-boxing-experience blowhards would foolishly question his chin.
