Not great fighters with one great attribute

Your example was terrible and even the point about Quartey being reliant on one attribute is hogwash IMO. For one thing Quartey relied on his arm defense just as much as his jab and I've seen him use his strength and durability to beat smaller welters into submission too. He also nearly defeated ODLH in a fight where he pretty much dispensed with his jab.

He wasn't great because of a lack of dedication but he was very good based strictly off his talent.

    Or, 'Ok fair enough'.

But Quartey was not great. And he had only one GREAT attribute. So he's a decent shout. And he wasn't even my suggestion.

But if you're going to go down that road, you can say the same thing about Shane Mosley...in that his only GREAT attribute was his handspeed. But again that would be unfair. Shane also had a pretty decent chin, good power and their were many reason why he had a long unbeaten stretch....same with Quartey.

I think the spirit of this topic is to list guys like Shavers or Tex Cobb etc...

Funny, "Bruce Seldon - Jab" was the first entry that came to mind when I saw this topic.

Darnell Wilson - power (unless his nickname always qualifies as being a great attribute)

Don't let my easy going facade fool you, I'll press the big font button and swear at anyone if it comes down to it.

Yup, right you are. I think it's fair to say though that Quartey only had one great punch. A jab is a more specific attribute than say handspeed, so it made him a reasonable name to bring up in the discussion, even if it shoulda been with the proviso that he didn't quite meet the criteria, but a closely related one.:TLC:

So I've heard. Kill men by the hundreds...and if you got really mad you'd consume the English with fireballs from your eyes, and bolts of lightning from your arse.

Shane had an outstanding chin, not a pretty decent one.

The thread, though, asks for a fighter with a genuinely great attribute --- & Quartey only had the one. He was good elsewhere, but not a great fighter overall, & his one quality in the elite-arena was that punch.

Forrest wasn't known as a big puncher and had shane floored twice and seriously hurt.

Sure..it was a one-off...but if that happens to a fighter, in his prime....his chin cannot be labeled as "outstanding". "Pretty Decent" is more accurate.

"outstanding" has to be reserved for guys like Hagler, McCall and the like.

I get you. It's just that with semantics & descriptions, there's no clear line as to who means what. I could call Quartey a great fighter within reason, for instance, but not in the sense of all-time greatness. It's very subjective.

If you say, "Outstanding," as the highest-level of wording one can use for a chin, though, then I agree that Mosley would fall somewhere short, with fellas like Hagler, Basilio, Fullmer, McCall & the like in the top echelon.

Nah, those are 'elite' chins, IMO. The best of the best. 'Outstanding' is a level below that. Mosley was an 'outstanding' champion with an 'outstanding' chin, in my eyes. He stood out from the crowd in both regards. There were better fighters with better chins, but not many.

    These threads get stupid.

    Outstanding to Elite etc....

My response was to lb 4 lb...who suggested that Shane's chin was best of the best in the way he responded. The use of the word "outstanding" is actually irrelevant..as is "elite" or whatever...it wasn't the word he used...it was what he responded to and his response that caused me to interpret it (CORRECTLY...I might add) the way I did. He was basically suggesting that Shane's chin deserves mention among the very best (or else he wouldn't have responded that way)..that's what "outstanding" meant to him.

My rebuttal was therefore fair and the Forrest fight relevant. We've never seen that happen to a guy like Hagler...and certainly not against a mediocre puncher.
