    Leonard overall.

Tyson at his peak was more popular than Leonard ever was though IMO...but he fell from grace rapidly.

    Tyson by approximately 9,000,000 miles.

A guy I know went a dinner with Tyson a couple nights ago. Paid £100 for the privilege, along with 700 others. Most the night was spent watching Mike eat his dinner on a stage while 700 folk gawked. Then the auction started. Then the whole thing was repeated the next night.

You could organise a night with any 5 other fighters since Ali and it wouldn't generate that sort of interest. I'm not even 100% sure Ali would.

I hear you. It probably was Tyson.

Sugar Ray Leonard was RED HOT (in terms of popularity, naturally) in the early 80s though.

But you're right...I'd say Tyson was the guy. Most famous Athlete in history, not named Muhammad Ali.

Eskimo's and house wives and Chinamen know exactly who Mike Tyson is. And people still love that dude with a passion. Aforementioned guy I know has a tattoo of his name on his arm : this is a picture from the dinner saturday night, I doubt he'd mind. Mike's looking old.....and bemused by the drunken Glaswegian patter Gary's no doubt spouting at him.

Man, history tells me to lean toward Sugar Ray Leonard. The dude's face was everywhere.

That being said, Mike Tyson was the savior. Mike Tyson was a young destroyer that woke boxing from the self-induced coma that Larry Holmes prompted. Mike Tyson made boxing a PPV worthy sport again.

And I think an honorable mention needs to go out to Oscar as well.

Depends what part of the World it is in.

Tyson would do well in the USA, Germany, UK.

In Japan, they would hide the Geishas and put on their Kendo gear and try to make Sushi out of his ass.

The Chinese love Mike Tyson. They will put his name on anything. Whether they have his permission, or not.

ARe you suggesting that the Japs don't like Tyson? If so you're crazy...when he was there to fight Tubbs and then for Douglas...he was worshiped.

No...he was...respected. He was respected as the Champion. The Japs are big into that respect for champions nonsense. He was getting beat senseless and they never peeped...cos he was champ, and champs get respect. But liked him? Between you and me, and lets keep this private.......Japs ain't too fond of black folk. Or Afghans. :scared: They made an exception for Bob Sapp but only cos they knew he really couldn't fight.

Because Sly thought the thread said "Most popular fighter after Ali's retirement that raised chickens in Pensacola...."

Tyson without any doubt. My grandmother knew about him, and she was already half dead in '88.

Otis, check the title mate, most popular fighter SINCE Ali.

Anyway, regarding RJJ, he wasn't, but he could have been, perhaps should have been.

Id say Tyson was the most famous, but the most popular was Leonard... people ADORED that cocksucker

Tyson was much more famous, but that doesnt necessarily mean well liked... I think he was fascinating to the general public in the way a five-headed man with octopus tentacles for arms would be fascinating...

if the question is purely fame, then its CLEARY Mike Tyson

    absolutely not

what planet do you guys live on? boxing in the US is BARELY a fringe sport nowadays

most people dont have any idea who Manny Pacquiao is, they haven't heard the name

for example, I guarantee my mother knows who SRL, Tyson, Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and (because of me watching boxing, De La Hoya) Larry Holmes are... but if I said "Manny Pacquiao" to her she'd say "pack a what?" ...

the average person who doesnt follow boxing has never heard that name, but they have heard all of the others I mentioned

Maybe you could say Tyson was the most infamous, as well as famous.

I wanted to just respond..STFU...but I'll be more polite.

Tyson was/is even more loved than Leonard. Tyson wasn't just famous...he was loved. Shiiiiiiiiiit...even Desiree Washington's father was initially upset that she brought rape charges against Tyson, he didn't believe his daughter initially. That's how popular the man was!

Reasonable minds can differ here. Leonard was absolutely, unequivocally adored. People worshipped the ground he walked on, & they did in positive droves. The same can justifiably be said for Tyson.

Most people in Britain don't know who Ray Leonard is. They'll have heard the name 'Sugar Ray' but I don't think most could link the name to the face and tell you much about him.

    Just sayin'....
