Pretty odd, don't you think REED? Manny fighting a Mexican in Dallas drawing less than Clottey? I mean really, how many fans does Clottey have? It must be testament to at least some people boycotting the idea of plasterito being allowed to fight.
REED Attributes it to the NOVELTY of Dallas/Ft. Worth Having a Fighter of Pac's Ilk in Town...EVERYBODY Wants To B Apart of "THE FIRST TIME", So to Speak...Still, it was THE Most Shocking Aspect of the Entire Fight Week, in REED's Opinion...Arum OPENLY Predicted 60,000 Minimum & REED (Being Ever the OPTIMIST) Thought it'd B Closer to 70,000.... The Fact that Clottey DIDN'T Offer Any Resistance May have Turned Off Some Dallas Area Fans Too...That 1st Fight WASN'T "About" Clottey, Per Se, but his LACK of Performance Could've Contributed to LOWER Attendance for Pac-Margarito.... REED:mj:
I've been watching boxing since 1972 and I'd have to put Manny at the top of the list. For me, starting his career at 106 pounds and dominating a guy that weighed 165 pounds last night is difficult to argue against. That is just a completely unheard of feat. And I am absolutely not a Pacman fan. I mean, I am huge fan of what he has accomplished, but never really pulled for him. I would love to hear points to the contrary, but I can't personally make an argument for anyone I've seen (Ali, Leonard, Duran, Spinks, Chavez, Holmes, etc) being ahead of Manny.
I'm envious mate, looked like a great atmosphere. To me, Manny is the greatest fighter of my lifetime and you got to see him put on a show like that live, must have been one hell of an experience...Lucky bastard!
I think if he retires tomorrow he'll be among the 2 or 3 fighters that are commonly chosen as the best ever. If he were to do the ridiculous, and take on Williams or Martinez? And win? I think he clinches the spot. I'm not sure what a win over PBF does for him at this stage, besides making him a ton of money. At this point, Pacquiao can ignore PBF and be confident his legacy will not suffer as a result. PBF, of course, is in no such position. A follow-up question to the thread is, what is Pacquiao takes on the likes of Williams or Martinez and loses? Does his legacy suffer? I think it would have to, although it would depend on the manner in which he lost. It certainly wouldn't count against him the way a defeat at 147 would at this point, but I think ultimately, it would be held against him.
If he were to beat Mayweather, I'd have him top 15..the other guys (berto especially, martinez, williams) are not as relevant to his placing IMO. The cool thing about the old guys on the list is that many of them fought the same elite guys a few times - i think that counts for something, I mean how would we rate Pacquaio if he had just fought and drew with Marquez once, and once and lost to Morales? I'd rather not see Mosely get hurt and humiliated again, and Marquez III wouldnt be fair although I'd still have him a lot more competitive than anyone since they last fought
You'd be pretty much alone. He should already be considered top 10 at least, more like top 5. If he beats Floyd nobody should consider him less than top 3. If he also beats the winner of Martinez Vs Williams, ranking him less than 1 would be illogical.
Robinson, Ali, Armstrong, Duran, Pep, Leonard, Moore et al were pretty special too...its much of a muchness, I don't think Pac is better than those guys but he does deserve to be considered among them ps without even including greb and langford
Ali? How do Ali's accomplishments match Pacquiao's? Pacquiao has a much better record, and is a much better fighter. Robison and Duran can compete with Pacquiao in terms of resume and ability, so can Armstrong to an extent, but no one else. People take Pacquiao for granted becuase he's here and now. If you look at his record compared to anyone else in history, it's at least as good, considering the epic weight class span especially, and his sheer dominance over most opponents. If you look at a Pacquiao fight against footage of anyone in history, you'll see he is at least as good, and shouldn't really be considered an underdog against anyone in history, in a P4P sense.
The last time the fans saw Margarito he was getting his ass beat by Mosley. Thats the main reason it had a smaller crowd than Clottey, they know Margarito didn't have a legit chance at winning.
Mayweather and Pacquiao are the best fighters of each others eras. It's amazing how Pac gets a pass for not fighting the best fighter of his era but Mayweather is hurt by it.
What are you even talking about? What twisted up version of the truth has you saying that Pacquiao hasn't faced the best fighters of his era?
if he beats those two and he is proven clean??? oh, hell yeah, he is easily one of the two or three best ever
All that I will say is that we need to feel honored of having the privilege of watching Pacquiao fight in his prime and while still active. We will tell our grandchildren we watched those Pacquiao fights while they happened and they will look at us in either disbelief or awe.
