No. In fact it's the worst possible approach. Observe the Clottey fight, who's basically a poor mans Winky. Manny pretty easily.
Like I said going in - Margarito's natural style is probably the best way to beat Manny at these higher weights. But Tony wasn't quite good enough to execute. Not at this stage anyway. During the periods where Margarito led aggressively it was a very rough night for Manny. Prime Duran beats Manny at welter IMO.
I don't see it. Floyd has the best style to beat Manny at the higher weights...defense and counter-punching..making you miss and making you pay. That's the foil for manny's demonic volume aggression.
Hahahahahahah at winky winning 11 rounds to 1. Are you fucking kidding me? The same Winky that lost to Vargas? The same Winky that has a similar style to Clottey? Winky has always been a solid world class fighter and nothing more. Pacquiao by domination.
Counter punching is the worst of all strategies against that kind of varied volume, IMO. I really believe manny has improved his ability to put punches together quickly at the higher weights, he's gone from much more of a power punching slugger looking for big shots to a guy who's default strategy is to put together multi punch combos and move. He's retained the ability to sit down on big single shots when needs be and you saw him revert to that when he's crowded against Hatton & Tony & times against Cotto. Im not saying Floyd can't find a way to win; but he'll have to really sit down on his shots and really limit Pac's output; I don't think the kind of strategy Marquez employed at 126lb is the blueprint anymore, Manny's output is much higher and more varied now.
Hut Hut, you're absolutely right. Pacman is simply a different fighter. Now that his speed is more evident than ever against the biggest guys, he's truly maximising it, plus his footwork and footspeed is better than ever, and his accuracy and punch variety. His punch variety and sheer accuracy and speed, the way he can sneak a punch round the gloves from almost any angle and any slight opening is incredible. He does more damage than you realise too, as was evident in the plasterito fight, because he is not afraid to throw a full combo when he sees an opening. Not 1 punch. Not a 1-2, but a 3 or 4 punch combo, sharp, flush shots too. Another thing is, although in some ways Floyd is like a bigger, stronger, faster Marquez, Marquez is more offensive. Marquez threw more combos against Pacquiao and took the initiative at times. Floyd throws 1 punch at a time these days, and is more defensive than ever. I don't see that changing against Pacquiao. Oh and regarding the topic, obviously the reason ILLU picks Winky by 11-1 decision is because Winky 12-0'd his boy Tito and made him look like a spastic. But to anyone else picking Winky, shame on you.
Anyway Hut....I agree that manny has improved since the first Marquez fight...but we mustn't forget that a Post-Morales Pacquiao struggled with Marquez in teh rematch (a fight many thought Marquez won). Pacquiao had already become more versatile in his offense and stronger etc...but yet the counterpunching of Marquez bothered him yet again.
One trend which continues with Manny, and I believe it isn't a coincidence, is him fighting opponents who are left hand dominant. That's Diaz, Hatton, Cotto, De la Hoya & Margarito is succession with only Clottey breaking the trend who was a stylistic dream in other respects with that slow patient style. So it's conceivable that Manny isn't quite as good as these fights are painting him as and his vulnerability to a really good, consistent straight right hand remains. Stand by the rest of my previous post though, I don't just think he's improved, I think his style has fundamentally changed/expanded due to his foot speed relative to his opponents now. He's no longer out there trying to land hard hurtful shots all the time, he's content to pepper and move with greatly improved variety. That's a really good style against Floyd I reckon.
Good points. The best punch against a southpaw is the straight right hand...and as you said most of his opponents of late have been left hand dominant. Marquez and Morales couldn't miss with that punch in their fights with Pacquiao and no one in boxing today has a sneakier lead right hand than Floyd Mayweather.
That is a good point, but I see at as more of a coincidence. It's not like he's avoided any top fighters that have brilliant right hands. The fact that Pacquiao has improved as much as he has, partly in defense, tells me Floyd's right hand isn't that much of a concern. What is probably more of a concern is Floyd's jab and defense. Clottey has a pretty good right hand, but even he was having more success with the jab.
Pacquiao beats a slow fighter with no defense who was already annihlated by an old man and now he's gonna beat WINKY WRIGHT??? god, I hate hype
Cdogg, I know you got love for McWinky because he's Irish and all but hut is right, it is a very comfortable night for Pac. It's like when people discussed the Calzaghe-Wright fight, Calzaghe would just be too active. It's the same here, sure Pacquiao is smaller but Wright just wouldn't throw enough.
Margarito has a far better natural style to beat Manny Pacquiao. I hate hype too & Im not one to buy into it (with the possible exception of the hour proceeding a big fight when im usually drunk and up at 6am), but circumspect counter punching is Pac-fodder. Wright just doesn't let his hands go enough.
:: why not??? he threw PLENTY against Shane Mosley, a bigger guy with a bigger punch than Pac and a guy who threw lots of leather at him... there is no reason to assume that Winky Wright would be scared into a shell by the prospect of Manny Pacquiao... seriously, people are basing this off of a win against a punching bag who got wrecked by that same Mr. Mosley
Neutralising Mosley throwing 1 or 2 hail mary bombs at a time is just a different deal to dealing with somebody with the variety and volume of Pac. Way different style mesh here, IMO.
you guys let me kow when Pacquiao beats a big guy who can box and didnt just get killed in his last meaningful fight
Cdogg, hut is right. Mosley is bigger and is fast and all but Manny is faster, more accurate , more unpredictable, and has better movement. Manny all day in this one bro, and I like Winky.
again, I ask... what 154 pounder of note has Pacquiao beaten? what big man residing in even the same galaxy as Winky Wright has Pacquiao beaten?
