Paul Williams vs Sergio Martinez PREDICTIONS

Was this fight of the year last year?

Looking forward to this bonanza of a fight. Very relevant fight to the overall picture.

Williams is willing to go back to 147 to face either Pacquaio or Mayweather.

Martinez MUST come in better CARDIO shape than his last fight with Paul, and I've read reports Sergio came in very heavy to camp. He has the style to beat the Punisher.

Williams careless defense could be a problem again facing Maravilla.

 

i see another competitive fight with williams having the slight edge to win a close decision.

I'm picking Martinez.

He won the first fight, I don't see why he can't do the same. Paul is a very good fighter, but he can be outboxed, he is hittable, and he can be hurt.

I like both guys, should be a good fight.

I like both guys. HArd for me to root for one or the other in this one. Will be a great fight.

But I got Williams via close UD.

Both these guys hit hard and both are easily hittable due to a mixture of a clash in styles, poor defense and aggressive nature.
They both have good punch resistance and can hit the deck too, so the re-match I think is going to be even better than the 1st.

It's basically going one of two ways. Both guys will trade immensely throughout, with 1 or 2 knockdowns thrown in, or, they'll both fight cautiously, having a better understanding of what each other does well/poorly.
I DON'T think it'll be the latter!

You gotta respect both guys ability, as they looked exhausted late in the first fight but were still able to take big shots and continue to give back.

With the re-match in Atlantic City again and with the judges in the 1st fight favouring Williams (one judge went 119-110 Williams, WTF?), it's going to be tough for Martinez (if the fights close again), to get a close points decision, so Martinez will have to tighten up his defense or go for the KO (which won't be easy).

I'm going for Martinez to beat Williams by UD this time round.

 

I think Martinez will get robbed again. Ill go with Williams by disputed decision.

 

Martinez doesn't have poor defense.

 

Martinez got tagged quite abit during that Williams fight. I guess his style is keeping his hands low during his fights.

I enjoyed watching him beat Pavlik.

Nah, he won't get fighter of the year but he's a lock for the Arturo Gatti bravery award.

 

Tall Paul UD, but I really, really hope Sergio wins. I'll now be rooting for every Al Haymon fighter to get KOed.

 

Pacquiao should be fighter of the year whether Martinez wins or not.

Someone who started their career at flyweight slapping around 2 proper welterweights in 1 sided fashion without losing a round is unheard of, unprecedented, and insane.

A welterweight beating the middleweight champ is impressive, and then beating a good fighter like williams is impressive, but not unheard of. What Pacquiao is doing is unique.

I think you're seriously underselling Martinez' year if he wins this weekend.

Williams is far fresher than Margarito, and I'd pick him to beat the crap out of him if they were to rematch at any point this year.

Pavlik, wherever he's at in his career, was still the lineal middleweight king at the time they fought. Significance plays a ... well a significant :: part in my choice for Fighter of the Year.

Pac convincingly beat Clottey but there was nothing Fighter of the Year-ish about it. In fact, it was probably the dullest fight Pac was ever in, and not a fight I'd even rank in his own Top 10 most notable wins. Also, he was a 5-1 favorite to do what he did to Margarito.

At some point, we have to lose the flyweight angle. It makes him an all-time great and approaching one of the very best of all time. but it can't weigh THAT heavily into every fight he has at higher weights.

Martinez beating the best MW in the world and perhaps the best MW contender (as in non-alphabet titlist) is far more impressive.

If Martinez were to lose.. you'd have to consider:
- Fernando Montiel (knocking out best bantie in the world, and on the road),
- Giovanni Segura (knocking out best pure boxer in game in Calderon, and on the road; a presumed KO win next weekend will make him 4-0, 4KO in 2010)
- Juan Manuel Lopez (three knockouts over legit Top 10 opposition).

IMO, all had better years than Pacquiao.

Jean Pascal probably warrants mention as well, esp if he convincingly beats Hopkins, but I wouldn't argue with anyone who said Pac had a better year.

But all that said, for my money it's Martinez' race to lose. A win this weekend locks it up.
