Easily the most respected by people who don't think the Sun is a newspaper.

Christ, of all the people to oppose me on the literary values, or lack thereof, of tabloid papers!!!

I think it's fair to say that standard of journalism and writing is higher than that found in the Sun/Mirror or the Mail. That seems like a reasonable criterion for "respected". Where you place it relative to the Torygraph or Times or Independent is a more arguable.

The Telegraph and Independent I would rank higher than the Times. In fact I wouldn't included the Times in this discussion at all.

Circulation isn't a sticking point for me. In fact fewer people reading something is usually a very good sign that it is well respected

Point taken, I think the Times fall somewhere between the tabloids and the three mentioned. Anytime I hear appeals to circulation or sales, I see the fugly face of Simon Cowell and Liberace Walsh shovelling rubbish to the masses and bleating about sales when the quality of the product is questioned.

I'm not opposing you on the 'value' of tabloid newspapers. I agree with you on that- they are trash.

Where I took, and still take, issue, is the idea that the Guardian is EASILY the most respected newspaper in the UK. I've never, ever heard anyone say that and I can't see myself how such a statement might be made. The Times is respected due to it's history (and as a lawyer you should know that the Times is a citable legal source whilst the Guardian isn't) and of the rest the Independent is probably the best considered.

The Guardian isn't that well respected at all (compared to other broadsheets). It is generally considered to be wooly, overtly liberal and left wing and extraordinarily condescending. IMHO it IS all of these things...

You are being obtuse, Feebles........the Guardian is well respected. Quote an article as being from the Guardian, and very few will publicly denounce it. Apart from me. :cheer:It's the Guardian who are running with the Wikileaks stuff....the BBC reports as if the Wikileaks were the wide-eyed tales of a child. In fairness to the Telegraph, would they have done the dirty with the expenses scandal if the preponderance of those snared were, as Salaco has posited, Torygraphers?

I'd wonder where you came to that conclusion. All the papers have their ideological bent - the Telegraph for its conservatism, the Times for right of centre, the Guardian for left of centre and the Independent perhaps splitting the two. For quality of writing, I can't see how the Times (which has diminished as a paper IMO over the last 15 years) should be regarded any higher given its pro-news international bias and frequent borrowing of material from syndicates, or the Telegraph with its harumpph conservatism angle, or even the Indepdent which is very uneven in terms of quality IMO. To say it isn't that respected, relatively, is ridiculous.

I was actually responding to your statement as quoted above.
I would not agree that it is generally accepted as the most respected paper.

I said, of the Guardian, that it "is the most respected". Perhaps I should have said that "it is most respected"....

The Guardian is well respected in certain circles of society, I agree. But you said it was EASILY the most well respected newspaper in the country. I've never heard such a statement before in my life.

It is one thing to say that the circulation figures are not indicative, but even ignoring the tabloid shite, it is the lowest circulating newspaper in the British broadsheet market. How can something be 'EASILY the most respected newspaper' when it is is the least read?

Oh, and it certainly isn't well respected in Newcastle, mind, due in large part to the absolute RUBBISH printed by one Louise Taylor, NUFC correspondent (and life long Sunderland fan/match programme contributor). That woman is a joke of a writer and as far from respected, except by mackems, as it is possible to be...

there's a special sort of mockery reserved for the guardian. two examples of this from popular culture: GPs using the GROLIES acronym (Guardian Reader of Low Intelligence in Ethnic Skirt); and armando iannucci in 'the armando iannucci show' saying "These [the broadsheets] are the papers you should read when you're an adult, although this one [the Guardian] seems sillier the older you get."

too many articles have that distinctive high-pitched, oversimplified, goody-and-baddy style. i'm a teacher and a general lefty but even i find it irritating. all four of the big broadsheets vie for similar levels of general respectability i reckon.

for me, overall, the beeb's best.
