They better do Duran's entire career in one movie because he'd quit in a sequel.

That has to be the latest premature stoppage ever.

Well, for those interested, The Fighter received six Golden Globe nominations, puttng it one behind The King's Speech, and tied with The Social Network.

So you want hims to go by "Irish/German/English" Micky Ward?

He identifies with his Irish side more so that with the other sides, which is why he calls himself Irish. Nothing wrong with that imo. You don't have to be a full Irishman/German/Spaniard/Scot to feel like one.

I thought it was a good, solid movie.

I didn't find it to be great.

Wahlberg's performance was alright. Kind of bland, but Micky seems like a bland guy anyway. Bale stole the show.

Went to see it today. As has already been mentioned. Good movie, not a great one. It was a great performance by Christian Bale.

The boxing portion was pretty disappointing. Micky's actual boxing career was pretty much cliff noted through, and none of his opponents were presented as anything more then generic characters. Knowing they weren't covering the Arturo Gatti trilogy it would have been nice if they had at least mentioned the Augustus and Green fights. Actually, the entire timeline they used for his fights, didn't make much sense at all. :dunno:

As a family drama it was very good. The biggest surprise was probably how many funny moments there actually are in this film. Amy Adams was very good, Melissa Leo made me want to punch her in the face as Micky's mother, which means she did what she was supposed to, and Marky Mark did his job as Micky.

    7/10

Very good movie. Mark Wahlberg is NOTHING like Mickey Ward in looks or personality but that aside, very entertaining. Christian Bale was great. They seem to invent a couple fights but apart from that it was cool.

    Mickey's girlfriend was sexy!! :hump:

She was a babe! Loved the scene when you could see her nipples.

I loved the movie. After I watched it, I picked up a copy of the HBO doc they made about Dickie's crack addiction. Crazy shit.

This was a solid movie. It's really about Ward's family dynamic and as messed up as it was it's a wonder Mikey won any damn fights. I thought Bale did a good job. Ward's character was a bit bland. The boxing part of it was definitely secondary to the family troubles and whatnot... hence why the Gatti fights weren't even featured. I thought the Shea Neary fight was pretty well done, featured the same uppercut combinations that actually happened in the KO.

Yeah. And it's funny, Ward's brother gives him some advice from jail about how to beat him... I think he said to let Sanchez punch himself out and then go to the body, and witch stances a lot... which is funny to me but interesting

Cool. That fight seemed very easy to translate into a movie scene. I hope they made the HBO crew seem hysterical and melodramatic about how bad off Ward was in that fight.

I'm wondering if they used the actual audio, because they used the HBO voices but never showed them onscreen.

I don't even remember the fight on HBO, but as to your question, I think you would be happy with the commentary.

The movie was pretty much built around 3 fights. Mike Mungin (which in reality does not fit into any timeline the movie gives), Alfonso Sanchez and Shea Neary.

They also made it appear as if the Neary fight occured right after the Sanchez fight, when they weren't even close. As if he had gotten the WBU title shot based off the Sanchez fight.

I remember the Sanchez fight on a TVKO PPV undercard. They do use actual commentary, but not always for the fight being showcased on the film.

Only you guys would understand this, complete boxing nerd stuff.... but in the movie they use some clips of Lampley commentary from the Ward-Gatti fight in the Ward-Neary movie fight. Also they use commentary from Roy Jones and George Foreman at times for the Neary movie fight, which we all know those two never worked the same fight commentating at the same time.

It is the same commentary from the Sanchez fight tho, at least clips. They do use all the melodramatic lines where Merchant and Jones were calling for the fight to be stopped and that Ward was going to get hurt, etc.

yes, they used the actual audio, including Merchant's 'famous' line "After I said the fight should be stopped, Micky Ward went out and stopped it".
