this fight was probably too dangerous for morales with money matches looming against marquez and a few others. time to bring in marty jacubowski
Yeah, that probably had more to do with it than Barrios' driving. Morales' people were probably behind this latest maneuver... http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=5919410&type=story
I have to agree. I was scared when I first heard that Morales' comeback tour was taking place at 140-147 lb. and assumed it to mean that he wanted to fight but not have to train particularly hard. Still has a little bit left. I guess he's somewhere between where Rafael Marquez and Israel Vazquez were in their 4th fight. As for a JMM fight - there's no telling how Marquez looks in 2011. Looking a little older with each fight, it's possible that it all catches up with him. Perhaps a little bit of wishful thinking (I like Marquez but am a bigger fan of Morales), but at 140 - could very well be competitive and perhaps out of JMM's comfort zone.
that's a fight he could easily lose. lorenzo is tricky and is also a slick guy. considering his style, i think this is less physical yet more of a difficult fight than what barrios would've presented. i didn't see the humbierto soto rematch, but i heard lorenzo was hell of a lot more competitive than the first fight.
No, he wasn't. He just managed to not get knocked out in the rematch. He was a lot braver, but I don't recall Soto losing more than two rounds in the fight. What's funny is that everyone keeps turning to that fight, as well as his narrow loss to Linares, as proof that Morales is in with a genuine threat this weekend. Lost in the discussion is that all of Lorenzo's best moments (albeit in losing performances) came at 130. He's taking a fight at 140 lb - where he's never before fought - and on five days notice. Not to mention that he was already smallish for 130, where he's spent most of his career. Granted, Morales being well beyond the twilight of his career makes any fight interesting at this point. But beyond that, not sure Lorenzo is a threat beyond lasting the distance.
He didn't go away quietly. I guess that's open to interpretation as to how competitive he was. I remember watching that fight on TV Azteca thinking that Top Rank would have a good thing going. I think it was the first fight after the original Solo Boxeo officially closed out on Telefutura. Sadly, the Azteca series went way downhill after that.
If Marquez doesn't get the call for Pacquiao's May 7th date, it could be Morales, according to Steve Kim, talking with Richard Schaefer: http://www.maxboxing.com/news/promo-lead/the-last-warriors-standing-in-ontario
If the theme of the card will be worthless mismatches I'm all for having Miguel Cotto vs Rafael Marquez and Lucian Bute vs Paul Spadafora opening the card. :bears:
